Tooting Run Club: 2024 Handicap Race #4 | Tooting Bec Athletics Track

The fourth and final race of the series This will be the fourth and final race of the series. The races are held at Tooting Common on the first Monday in each month, from June to September. After each race, we’ll gather at Rose & Crown around 20:15 for our monthly social... For those who don’t know, the idea of handicapped run is to create a level field so everyone’s able to finish at around the same time regardless of ability. That didn't happen in the first race because we all started at the same time but we're going to use finish times as the basis for future handicap runs. Your handicap (head start) is worked out by subtracting the the first finishers time from your time i.e. how long behind the run leader you were in the previous race. To keep things manageable for us to organise, handicaps are then adjusted to the nearest 30 secs. If you missed the previous race, we won't be asking you for an estimated time in order to work out what your handicap will be. Instead we will place into a Wave based on which Monday night group you normally train with. At the end of the series, we will be awarding prizes to both male/female runners in the following categories: Fastest time; Most points scored; andMost improved runner (only those who have done at least three races are eligible, and it's based on improvements from their first race to the last)Results will be published in full on our WhatsApp Group and selected results will also be shared on Instgram which will mention names of participants and their finish times. Here’s how scoring works: points are only given for races 2, 3, and 4, and are based on your finishing position, not time. Eligibility: To be eligible for points in a race, you must have participated in a previous race in the current series. Example: To have earned points in Race 3, you must have participated in either Race 1 or Race 2. If Race 3 was your first race, you are only eligible for points in Race 4. Points System: Points are awarded based on your finishing position, not your time. The first finisher receives points equal to the number of runners. Each subsequent finisher receives one point less than the previous finisher. Example for 200 runners: 1st place gets 200 points2nd place gets 199 points3rd place gets 198 pointsAnd so on... Cumulative Scoring: Points from Races 2, 3, and 4 are totalled to determine the final league standings. The winner is the person with the highest total points from these races. Check out our Instagram page for more information. Please arrive from around 18:20 so we can get you signed in and ready to start from 19:00. These sessions are incredibly popular so there may be in a queue waiting to check-in if you leave it too late! • By booking a place, you are confirming that you are fit and well to participate in running and exercise. • If you have any existing medical conditions, please check with your doctor that it is safe for you to train. • If you begin to feel unwell during the course of a session, please stop exercising and inform the group lead. • Please ensure that the group lead is aware if you’re unable to continue and you need to leave the session early. • If you have any special needs requirements, please let us know. Photography We have a roaming photographer taking pics of the sessions for the purpose of promoting the club. If you do not wish to feature in the photos, please let the organiser know at the start of the session. Information Source: Tooting Run Club | eventbrite

We're excited to welcome Ralf Webb and Nathalie Olah to Review to discuss Ralf's new book Strange Relations... Strange Relations explores the American crisis in mid-century masculinity and the lives and works of four bisexual writers who fought to express and embody alternate possibilities. Building on Walt Whitman's philosophy of the love between men, it considers the ways in which Tennessee Williams and Carson McCullers, John Cheever and James Baldwin, resisted in their art, as well as in their relationships, the damaging expectations of contemporary gender and sexuality. Ralf Webb is a poet, writer and editor based in Bristol. His debut collection of poems, Rotten Days in Late Summer was published by Penguin in 2021, and was shortlisted for the Felix Dennis Prize for Best First Collection. Webb's poetry and critical writing has appeared in Granta, The Guardian, The London Review of Books, Fantastic Man, and The Poetry Review. He currently manages a creative writing mentorship programme in collaboration with Folio and First Story, which supports school-age writers from low-income backgrounds. Nathalie Olah is the author of Bad Taste (Dialogue 2023), Class (Tate Publishing 2021) and Steal As Much As You Can (2019). She contributes articles to The Guardian, Times Literary Supplement, Tribune and ArtReview. Tickets are £5 (redeemable against a copy of the book on the night) and there will be wine! Doors at 6.45pm for a 7pm start Information Source: review | eventbrite
