Arrayed against them are the Honoured Guard of the Endless City, who have heard the prophecies and stories, that beings of no reality cannot be allowed a foothold in one. The Oblivisk, a giant obsidian pylon towering above the city is the only sorcerous bar holding the door between realities closed. Far too strong to topple, but widening the cracks in it is well within reach. Will you take the first step to fracturing this arcane edifice or sealing it up once and for all? World-renowned photographer Alec Soth visits Foyles for a discussion about his questioning new work, Advice for Young Artists. Inspired by the late Polaroids of Walker Evans, the photographs in Soth’s latest book gather his impressions on life, art-making, and ageing, captured in his encounters visiting twenty-five undergraduate art programmes across the United States. Twenty years on from the publication of his first book, this is the reflective and provocative latest work from a master of his craft. Alec Soth is an award-winning photographer born and based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He has published over thirty books including Sleeping by the Mississippi (2004), NIAGARA (2006), Broken Manual (2010), Songbook (2015), and A Pound of Pictures (2022). Soth has had over fifty solo exhibitions including shows organized by Jeu de Paume in Paris (2008), the Walker Art Center in Minnesota (2010), Media Space in London (2015), and the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum (2024). Soth has been the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards, including the Guggenheim Fellowship, and is a member of Magnum Photos. This event will be chaired by Charlotte Jansen. The author of Girl on Girl and Photography Now:Fifty Pioneers Defining Photography for the Twenty-First Century, Jansen has also written extensively on contemporary art for the Guardian, Financial Times, ELLE, frieze, and The British Journal of Photography, among others. This is an inclusive and friendly monthly life drawing session from 6.30-8.30pm. The classes are self-led but help is at hand if wanted. We have new and varied models each week, and materials are provided. This includes newsprint, charcoal, pastels, chalk, pens, pencils, fixative spray etc. If you’d like to work on thicker paper we recommend bringing your own sketchbook but apart from that we should have you covered! Due to the discretion of the model we ask that people arrive 10-15 minutes before the session begins so we can have doors closed and everyone in the space. The venue sells both soft and alcoholic drinks that you can enjoy while waiting and participating in the class. We generally move from short to long poses and the class includes a 10 minute halfway break. Tickets are £15 with concession tickets of £10 for 25’s and under, absolutely all levels welcome and looking forward to seeing you at Morocco Bound!
