Dec 3, 2024 (UTC-6)ENDED
Boulevard
Join author Kim Guerra to celebrate her new book Baddass Bonita with a reading, conversation, Q&A and signing! Kim will be in conversation with Giovanna Gonzalez.

From the creator of Brown Badass Bonita comes a “powerful and necessary guide toward self-discovery and metamorphosis” (Dr. Mariel Buqué) that can help transform not only your life but the lives of everyone in your community.
Almost every Latina has heard the phrase calladita te ves más bonita—you look most beautiful when you are silent. It's a message rooted in machismo passed from generation to generation, and one that poet and Latine therapist, Kim Guerra, grew up on.
In Badass Bonita, Guerra tells a story of coming into her own power, and guides readers through the process of finding their own. Rejecting what she was taught as a girl, she learned to use her voice and the more she listened to that inner niña, the more she unearthed her inner guerrera. Vowing never to be calladita again, she now teaches Latine women to find their voices, healing the stories and emotional wounds that have kept them silent.
Tackling tough conversations around machismo, mental health, trauma, and intersectional identities, Badass Bonita is a guide that will help readers: Understand underlying sources of wounds and trauma,Shift from self‑silencing and into revolutionary self‑love,Build confidence and bring positive change to relationships, family and community.Lyrical and accessible, written in Kim’s signature poetic, Spanglish style, Badass Bonita is perfect for readers of My Grandmother's Hands and Este dolor no es mío, — for mothers, daughters, therapists, and mujeres poderosas everywhere ready find their wings. Kim Guerra is a queer woman of color. A butterfly woman who has given herself wings. She is a writer, advocate, and entrepreneur. She is the creator of “Badass x Bonita”, a brand and movement that she considers to be a work of self-love and her love for her community. She wants each person to wear “Badass x Bonita” products as a statement and shield-- a living revolution. Guerra is the author of “Mariposa” and “Mija”: collections of bilingual poems, affirmations, and revolutionary love letters. “Badass x Bonita” is for all humans who are giving themselves and their community wings through revolutionary love. Guerra is a TEDx Speaker and received the “Agent of Change'' award from Univision’s Premios Juventud and has been recognized for her work in various publications including Oprah Magazine, Today, People, Huffington Post, Buzzfeed, Univision, Televisa, Remezcla, R29Somos, and FiercebyMitu. Kim Guerra continues to use her voice and platform to advocate for the immigrant, LGBTQ+, BIPOC, survivors, mujeres, and oppressed communities. She was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, CA. Kim graduated from Cornell University and received her Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from Antioch University in Seattle. She’s currently based in Los Angeles and Coyoacan. Giovanna Gigi Gonzalezis a TikTok influencer, financial educator, and author of the bestselling book Cultura and Cash. Theater, Governance, and Incarceration: Voices from Inside | Ridge Walk Academic Complex (RWAC)
Dec 3, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Diego
Creating Theater in Prisons with Nesser Rahmaninejad Creating theater in prisons, though, has a long history around the world, but attention to it has been started not long time ago. Rahmaninejad’s talk about this issue focuses on his own experience in creating theatre as a political artist/prisoner in Iran. Bio: Nasser Rahmaninejad, a foremost, celebrated Iranian artist started his theatre career in 1959 in Iran. In response to the authoritarian cultural policies and harsh censorship of the Shah’s regime, he founded his alternative, independent theatre group, Mehr, in 1966. His group, which later changed its name to Iran Theatre Association (1968), became very influential in the field, competing with other well-financed, state-sponsored theatre groups until it was shut down by the SAVAK, the Shah’s secret police, and all the actors, including Nasser Rahmaninejad, were arrested and imprisoned in 1974. Incarceration as a mode of Governance: Stories of Life “Inside” with Shahla Talebi In this presentation Talebi will seek to tell a story of prison that disrupts the boundaries of inside/ outside, mad/sane, dead/living, and emphasizes everyday modes of reclaiming life, centering untold stories/histories, and imagining a form of ecosociality that binds the dead and the living into a web of alternative kinships. Bio: Shahla Talebi is a social cultural anthropologist, currently an associate professor of religious studies and a faculty of anthropology of religion in the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious studies at Arizona State University. She is the author of awards winning book, Ghosts of Revolution: Rekindled Memories of Imprisonment in Iran, published by Stanford University Press.

Fundraiser Event for PRS Building Fund: 40 Original Artworks by J.A. Knapp | Philosophical Research Society
Dec 4, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
Boulevard
Benefit Fundraiser for PRS Building Fund: First-Ever Display of 40 Original Artworks by J.A. Knapp forThe Secret Teachings of All Ages The original artworks painted in the mid-1920s by illustrator John Augustus Knapp(1853-1938)for The Secret Teachings of All Ages, are among the most glorious esoteric and metaphysical paintings ever created: visions of Atlantis, the Oracle of Delphi, the Emerald Tablet, the Philosopher’s Stone, the Hand of Mysteries and more. Even high-quality reproductions can’t convey the mystery and beauty of the original watercolor-and-tempera artworks, which remain in pristine condition with stunningly fresh colors. For the first time since they were painted by Knapp nearly one hundred years ago, as a One-Night Only Display to raise funds for the End of the Year Giving Campaign for the PRS Building Fund: all 40 original artworks in the PRS collection for The Secret Teachings of All Ages will be exhibited in the Library together! Our enormous thanks to Virginia Warner and the Virginia S. Warner Foundationfor providing a generous grant to have these rare artworks conserved and framed by Digital Fusion. For fans and admirers of esoteric artwork and symbolism, and The Secret Teachings of All Ages, this is (literally) a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see these breathtaking paintings in person. As a wonderful historical note: Knapp worked in the 1920s painting poster art and silent film title cards for the Thomas Ince Film Co. in what is now Culver City. It was discovered during recent preparation for framing that one of the artworks was painted on the reverse of a silent film title card – and that work has been framed so that both the front art and the reverse card are visible, for the first time since it was created in the mid-1920s a century ago! In addition to the display of the paintings, the Benefit will feature short presentations on Knapp’s artwork by artist, writer, exhibit curator, art critic and former PRS Board Member Michael Pearce, artist and Surrealist Study Group founder Amanda Maciel Antunes (aka dama)and writer, teacher and PRS Contributing Artist Stephen Reedy, as well as a violin performance in the Library by noted musician Savannah Jo Lack. To commemorate this first-ever public display of the Knapp paintings, PRS has produced a limited edition, hand-numbered poster based on Knapp’s original art. Viewing times are as follows: 7:00PM 7:45PM NOTE: The presentations by Michael Pearce, Amanda Maciel Antunes, and Stephen Reedy will take place at 7:45 PM in the Auditorium. Tickets to either viewing session will admit you to the presentations at 7:45 PM. This event is FREE for PRS MEMBERS. You must RSVP to reserve a space, on a first come first served basis. If you’re not a member, please consider joining to help PRS keep presenting wonderful cultural programs like this! General Admission: $30 (exhibit only) General Admission + Ltd. Edition Poster: $50 Ltd. Edition Poster Only: $30 / Members’ Price for Poster: $20 Light refreshments will be served in the PRS Courtyard outside the Library during the event. Bios: Illustrator & artist John Augustus Knapp (1853-1938) is best known today for his collaborations with Manly P. Hall on the pioneering encyclopedia of esoteric symbols and traditions, The Secret Teachings of All Ages(1928) and The Revised New Art Tarot Deck (1929). Knapp’s breathtaking illustrations for The Secret Teachings – gorgeous visions of Atlantean temples, Delphic oracles and Mithraic gods, swirling with color and arcane symbols – are among the most admired works in esoteric art in the 20th century. Similarly, his designs for the Knapp-Hall Tarot have become classics in the field for their medieval-inspired simplicity and beauty. A native of Kentucky, born before the Civil War broke out, Knapp was well into his 60s when he met the much-younger Manly Hall and began working together on Knapp’s journal The All-Seeing Eye and other books. Michael Pearce is a dynamic writer, exhibit curator, and art critic. He is an active and enthusiastic participant in the conversation about 21st century art and its roots, especially contemporary imaginative realism. He has published dozens of articles about art and artists, and wrote a book about art and neuroscience titled Art in the Age of Emergence. He is a champion of art that emerges from popular culture and shapes the spirit of the age. His book Kitsch, Propaganda and the American Avant-garde - the story of the invention of the American avant-garde - will be published later this year. He is Professor of Art at California Lutheran University. Amanda Maciel Antunes (aka dama) is a Brazilian artist based in Los Angeles. Her autodidactic and transdisciplinary practice merges language and durational performance to create multi-media and site specific projects. She works in collaboration with public libraries, nature and communal spaces, reflecting on the selective nature of memory, inherent language and anthropological references as points of departure. She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally and had poetry and short stories published in various journals. Most recent select exhibitions and performances took place at Galeria Vermelho, Galeria Chão, Wignall Museum, Track16 Gallery, 18th Street Arts Center, Oregon Contemporary, Brand Art Library, ArtShareLA, and Hansell Gallery. Upcoming exhibitions include her first museum installation at Craft Contemporary in Los Angeles in early 2025. Her first book titled Second Birth was published in the Spring of 2023 by HEXENTEXTE. She’s also a librarian at the Philosophical Research Society in Los Angeles and founder/curator of the Surrealist Study Group (SSG) at PRS Library, focusing on intergenerational and cross-cultural women's histories and bridging connections. Stephen Reedy is a longtime student and sometimes teacher at PRS. He strives to bring a relatable and energetic approach to exploring the basics of Symbolism and comparative Philosophy. His other life is in the film and advertising industries, where he has worked with companies like Masterclass, Blumhouse and Warner Brothers. Savannah Jo Lack began her professional career as an orchestral violinist but soon abandoned that course to play in bands, tour Australia and make her own music. She was awarded a Golden Fiddle and a Churchill Fellowship for her work in Australia before moving to the US in 2007. After graduating with a masters in film composition from USC, Savannah was invited to be a part of the prestigious Sundance composer’s program in Summer 2022. She worked on the score for the movie Filip, directed by Michal Kwiecinski, (to be released Feb 2023) and composed the music for Tiger Ji’s tragi-comedy, Death and Ramen (2023 release) staring Bobby Lee and Matt Jones. Savannah composed music for the Emmy nominated documentary, Betrayal - the life and art of Rudolf Bauer and for the play, Bauer, by Lauren Gunderson which premiered off-Broadway in 2015. Savannah has worked as a soloist on feature and short film scores, (Killing Ground, Exitus Roma, Empyrean) . She has composed two albums with award-winning producer, Robot Koch. Tracks from these albums have been placed in major advertising campaigns, (Sony Bravia) and tv shows (Night Shift). From a coked-up nun to a duck-obsessed billionaire, Ted’s mediocre existence metamorphoses into a butterfly effect of subversive events, upending societal norms in ways he never could have imagined. With sardonic humor and sharp-witted satire, this book serves as a love letter to women’s rights, LGBQT+ rights, animal rights, and freedom of speech in an increasingly polarized world. The Big Sing: A Pop-Up Choir | Center for Yoga
Dec 6, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
Boulevard
The human voice is one of our oldest and most precious technologies. -- Brenton Zola, Harmonize Co-Founder ABOUT THE BIG SING Imagine ~ singing with a large ensemble of other members of your village and community in beautiful harmony. This unique gathering is more than a choir—it's an opportunity to come together in the spirit of Ubuntu, the African philosophy that “I am because we are.” We all have a different relationship with the idea of a choir. Some of us might have had difficult experiences in them growing up. Others of us might have had the time of our lives and now feel nostalgic. Others still might have watched from afar, wistfully longing to add our voice. No matter your relationship to choral singing, the Big Sing is here to a create a connective experience for all. It's an opportunity to sing in an impromptu choir of friends old and new, led by joyous facilitators (and a pianist). We'll sing, laugh, maybe even cry. We'll learn the foundations of what makes a choir sound cohesive and have takeaways about the behind-the-scenes magic of the world's best ensembles -- all while being beginner-friendly. If you miss singing in a choir or have always wanted to try one: welcome. Our Song: TAKE ME TO CHURCH One of the most consequential songs of the last couple decades, Hozier's Take Me to Church took the world by storm. The powerful and wrenching meditation on love, acceptance, belonging and being other resonated with hearts all the world. And now we will sing an arrangement of the song from Harmonize co-founder Brenton Zola. LEARNING BEFOREHAND The best choirs come prepared :o). Sheet music and vocal recordings of each part will be available in a Google Drive folder before the event, sent in an email. It's best to bring your own copy of the score, but we will have extras if you're unable. The more we prepare, the quicker we can get to the magic of harmonies that stir body and soul (Isn't that why we do it?). That said, we're all people with busy lives in a chaotic world. So don't stress -- our choir director and pianist will be there for us. (If this style of structured singing isn't for you, we have other events where we improvise or rap or just sing sleepy songs to each other -- so check those out). DURING THE EVENT, WE WILL: Ground together, melting away the stress of the day with help from our pianistMeet our conductor & warm our voicesConnect with our fellow choir membersDo some improvisational warmups to get out of our headsSang!Refine sectionsSang!!Record some beautiful videos!BUT...I'M NERVOUS We hear you. Singing can be really vulnerable. We do our best to make the environment warm and inviting to allow you to step into your bravery . You're always welcome to check-in with a facilitator if you need support. OUR PIANIST: Ty Rex In the ever-evolving spheres of classical and ambient music, Ty Rex is practices a personal sonic spirituality. A lifelong devotee of the piano and improvisation, Ty invites his listeners into to a sanctuary of healing, where the dichotomies of life and its unanswered questions find rest. LOGISTICAL INFO:ARRIVAL: We build in 30 minutes for arrival, so we ask that you please arrive in this window so we can begin together.
