Big Sleeps' personal history is deeply rooted in the 1990s gang culture of L.A., where he was shot multiple times, incarcerated, and in a dark cycle that almost no one can break free from. One thing that he did during this time was write letters. These letters were not meant to be artistic in any way but were used to mark the territory of the gang he belonged to. Throughout the years, Big Sleeps honed this style of lettering, unbeknownst to him that it would help him to overcome the clutches of the deadly lifestyle he had once fully embraced. With little hope of creating a future for himself, due to all that he had endured in his life and the stigmas of societal judgment, he was at a crossroads. Big Sleeps chose the high road. Against all odds, he transformed his life into one of hope and redemption. Utilizing the letters he wrote as a child to glorify his gang once, he began to use those same letters to influence a new generation of both aspiring and established artists. Big Sleeps has since defied all odds to become a massive success story by transforming his rough and dirty experiences into intricate letter-inspired fine art. While many of his signature styles may be indecipherable hieroglyphics for the uninitiated, the complexity and depth that go into each of the artist’s creations capture a far greater range of emotion than a more easily legible font could. Big Sleeps will be in Miami to release a limited edition print and will hand-embellish them live at The Private Gallery in Wynwood. Edition of 25, $200 each.
