The Figgy Pudding four are back with Manchester Lit and Phil for another helping of Christmas music, poetry, readings and other festive finery. Prepare to be transported into the mystery and magic of Christmas with an all-new programme including ancient and modern, the familiar and the obscure. The evening will feature original writings from wordsmith and actress Kate Millward; solos and duets with singers Julia Morley and Jill Taylor; and the effervescent sparkle of the very talented pianist Claire Dunham. The artists Claire Dunham (pianist) – Claire is an accompanist, chamber musician, piano teacher and adjudicator. She enjoys performing and recording with intriplicate (flute/oboe/piano trio), Voci Dolci (with Jill Taylor and Julia Morley) and the National Children’s Choir of Great Britain. Claire has appeared on BBC Radio 3 and ITV and performs nationally in venues from St Martin-in-the-Fields to the Bridgewater Hall. Kate Millward (actor/narrator) – Kate has narrated her original stories and poetry in a variety of stately homes and theatre venues, including presenting The Northern Chamber Orchestra’s Christmas concerts at Tatton Hall in Cheshire. Kate has also worked as an actor in TV and corporate training. She is currently lecturing at Salford University (Theatre and Performance courses). Julia Morley (soprano) - Julia’s opera roles include Belinda in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, and solo oratorio performances include Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem, Rutter’s Requiem and Haydn’s Nelson Mass with Holmfirth Choral Society, Huddersfield Choral Society and Harrogate Choral Society. Jill Taylor (mezzo soprano) - Jill’s solo recitals have included performances of John Taverner’s Russian song cycle Akhmatova’s Songs for voice and cello, Mahler’s song cycle Leider Eines Fahrenden Gessellen and Ravel’s Chanson Madecasses. Jill is also a regular guest soloist with northern choirs and operatic societies. She enjoys performances with Derek Blyth in lecture/recitals including Kurt Weill – I’m a Stranger Here Myself, No Regrets – the Life and Music of Edith Piaf and Degenerate Music, at RNCM, The Settlement Letchworth, Didsbury Arts Festival and for Manchester Lit and Phil. Manchester Museum is delighted to be collaborating with artist and Culture Champion Yvonne Noworyta in this series of drawing workshops for the curious, aged 50 and over. These workshops will allow you to get closer to your inner artist while discovering some of the objects that are part of Manchester Museum’s world-class collections. Museum staff and volunteers will give you an overview about the specimens and objects presented at each session and Yvonne Noworyta will guide you and support you throughout the drawing process. The workshops are taking place in a helpful, relaxed and friendly atmosphere. No previous experience is needed and all abilities are welcome. The ‘Eurovision for the Spoken Word’ has been contested since 2019 and is aimed at increasing cultural participation within individual cities as well as showcasing local talent on an international stage. Last year Manchester poet Esther Koch took home the crown and so, following the format of the competition, Manchester is the host for 2024. We're so excited to have Griot Gabriel representing Manchester as the winner of the local heats, now it's time to see who will win between the 14 UNESCO Cities of Literature taking part in the competition. With a mixture of live and livestreamed performance, judging videos that promise to be hilarious from sister cities around the world and some really exceptionally talented poetry - it's sure to be a night to remember. Recoverist Culture Fix is back with a concert at Bridgewater Hall. Radiating monumental mysticism, Des canyons aux étoiles recalls the National Parks of Utah, a wild canyons of the desert state; a perfect partner for Messiaen’s powerful spirituality. Their colourful rock formations glow throughout this unique work. Messiaen faithfully replicates the songs of birds – God’s musicians, he called them – in virtuosic writing for the orchestra. Pianist Steven Osborne is a huge champion of Messiaen’s music. The art gallery is the perfect meeting spot where we’ll spot a few bees in the gallery. I'll explain the significance of the Manchester bee, Industrial Revolution and Cottonopolis. We'll also look at the gorgeous William De Morgan Victorian tiles and Pre-Raphaelite Art. Then we will walk to the Waterhouse Pub to pay homage to the architect Alfred Waterhouse (1830 ~1905) who designed the gothic style masterpiece that is Manchester Town Hall and the incredible bee mosaic floor. Walking around the outside of the Town Hall, as it is being refurbished until 2024, we will walk through Library Walk. Here we can see the cotton flower mosaic floor and spot some more worker bees. After this brief tour, the workshop will take place for you to make your bee mosaic. All the materials will be provided for you to make your bee. Come along to my workshop in Thorniley Studios for the perfect beginners course in traditional silversmithing and jewellery making techniques. We will explore some basic techniques including sawing, soldering and shaping/forming to create a simple sterling silver ring. The silver we will be using is 100% recycled and all materials are provided. By the end of the afternoon you will have your very own silver ring to take home, handmade by you. The workshop lasts about 4 hours and the design of the ring is a simple silver band with either a mirror polish or hammered textured finish (see photos below). If you are interested in making something more bespoke I offer private workshops. More information can be found here. Our Holiday Show will be premiering at Chunky’s Cinema’s in MANCHESTER, NH on Monday, December 23 at 6:15pm. Doors will open at 5:15pm. Due to capacity limitations set by the venue, we will only have a select number of tickets available to view the movie.
