John Akomfrah: Arcadia | Plymouth

Nov 30, 2023–Jun 2, 2024 (UTC)ENDED
Plymouth
Exhibitions
With beautiful visuals of landscapes from across the globe, stunning underwater footage and a haunting soundtrack, Arcadia reflects on ‘The Columbian Exchange’ – the widespread transfer of plants, animals, precious metals, commodities, populations, technology, diseases and ideas between the Americas, Afro-Eurasia and Europe – the ‘New World’ and the ‘Old World’ – from the 1400s onwards. The film is presented across five screens in the shape of a cross with a multi-layered narrative featuring storms, restless seas, vast skies, beaches, ice fields, mountains, rivers and forests. We see how miraculous our planet is, but the epic scenery and landscapes are ‘interrupted’ by images of cargo, symbols of trade, ageing boat hulks, microbes, cells and people suffering from smallpox. They combine to evoke ideas of migration, journeys, colonial encounters, how things travel and spread, growth and decay. "I wanted to go back to a time before the guns came out – to explore what other weapons, intended or otherwise, were in play. There are always powerful forces at work that are beyond our control. Humans are never the only actors on the stage." - John Akomfrah Arcadia has a running time of approximately 50 minutes.

Topsham
Exhibitions
2024 marks 80 years since the frenetic months of 1944, when over 2 million troops from 12 countries were in Britain, preparing a surprise attack on Adolf Hitler and Nazi-occupied Europe. The people of Devon and the Exe Estuary were witnesses to this activity, many opening their homes to welcome strangers, or working alongside them to prepare for what would eventually be known as D-Day. Visit the Exhibition Room to explore a half-forgotten world of pillboxes, gas-masks and stiff upper lips. The exhibition will be open throughout the 2024 season.

Beyond the Page: South Asian Miniature Painting and Britain, 1600 to Now | Plymouth

Feb 17–Jun 2, 2024 (UTC)ENDED
Plymouth
Exhibitions
Beyond the Page includes a fantastic selection of historic works featuring battle scenes, love affairs, spiritual parables and exquisite depictions of the natural world drawn from major collections. Many are rarely displayed due to their fragility. They are shown alongside modern and contemporary works by artists from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Australia, the Netherlands, UK and USA. South Asian miniature painting is defined by its intricate craftsmanship, intimate scale and intense narrative. Beyond the Page focuses on Britain’s role in its development since the 1600s and explores how, from the 1900s onwards, artists have taken it beyond the pages of illuminated manuscripts to experimental forms that include installations, sculpture and film. It’s believed there are around 100,000 South Asian miniatures held in museum, gallery and library collections across the UK, yet they are rarely seen. This exhibition is also a chance to explore what and why we collect – as well as shine a light on some beautiful works from Plymouth’s permanent collection. A new display case featuring a small selection of beautiful Mughal watercolours from our historically important Cottonian Collection will be on show in our 100 Journeys gallery at the same time as Beyond the Page. 'Beyond the Page' is curated by Hammad Nasar and Anthony Spira with advice from Emily Hannam, and is accompanied by a new catalogue. The exhibition is organised by MK Gallery in partnership with The Box.
