Mythical Creatures: China and the World | Philadelphia Museum of Art
Dec 21, 2023–Jun 1, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Philadelphia
This exhibition will explore the theme of diversity by comparing mythical creatures from different cultures. While these fantastical animals may look different, they serve a similar purpose – to help humans make sense of the world.
On view in Gallery 339 will be classic Chinese legendary mythical creatures—the dragon, phoenix and qilin—juxtaposed with collection highlights from Japan, Korea, South and Southeast Asia, as well as Persia and Western Europe, to show the diversity of mythical creatures throughout the world, as well as their similarities and differences. Elaborately embroidered costumes and silver headdresses created by Miao, Yi and other minority peoples decorated with dragons, phoenixes, and creatures relating to origin myths will be on display in Gallery 326. In a third space (Gallery 321) Chinese contemporary works of mythical creatures by artists Xu Bing and Ai Weiwei show how the past continues to inform art today.

Best-known for his prior work as design director of MUJI—the Japanese “anti-brand” consumer goods company—Fukasawa has designed across a broad range of categories and media. Whether shaping electronics for a global market or collaborating with artisanal firms on fine furniture, Fukasawa advocates for a design philosophy of longevity, accessibility, and subtle humor over novelty, ephemerality, or blatant commercialism.

anamnesis - January 2nd Thursday Reception | InLiquid Gallery in the Crane Building
Jan 9, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Philadelphia
Join us on 2nd Thursday at Crane Arts in celebrating the group exhibition anamnesis. In anamnesis, we delve into the intricate tapestry of the human experience, exploring the profound themes of existence, memory, and the interplay of technology with our intimate lives. Featuring five artists: Doug Bucci, williamCromar, Zach Mellman-Carsey, John Singletary, and Chris Vecchio, this exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the cyclical nature of life, the inevitability of mortality, and the ways we navigate our connections with one another and the world around us. The term anamnesis, derived from ancient Greek, signifies the act of remembering and recalling past experiences. Each artist engages with the echoes of memory—personal and collective — with a unique connection to technology. John Singletary highlights our origins and the roles we play for each other and ourselves in Traces, while williamCromar and Doug Bucci interrogate how our recollections influence our interactions with the present and the past through the reimagining of historical art objects. In the other sense of anamnesis, referring to a patient's medical history, Bucci’s work dives into the endlessness of living with chronic illness. Zach Mellman-Carsey and Chris Vecchio draw from the physicality of anatomy and its integration with technology through interactive, and in some cases functional, sound objects that are only activated by the proximity to one's body. Depicting infinite cycles, repetition, life, and death, this intimate exhibition ultimately challenges us to confront our shared humanity and the myriad ways we remember and relate to our existence. The InLiquid Gallery is located within the Crane Arts Building, which is wheelchair accessible. There is limited accessible parking at the front of the building and a ramp leading to the main entrance. The main building door is not automated. Two all-gender bathrooms with multiple stalls are available for use — one with urinals, one without, and both with 1–2 wheelchair-accessible stall(s).
