Elijah - Make The Ting - Book Launch | The Wee Red Bar
Feb 18, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Edinburgh
Elijah - Make The Ting - Book Launch Close The App, Make The Ting is a collection of ideas shared by Elijah that began in July 2021, as the Covid 19 lockdowns were ending in the UK. They started as simple notes questioning what the music and creative scenes would look like after being shut down for 18 months shared regularly on Instagram, then developed into a multimedia project that spanned visual installations, an album with grime MC Jammz, a club night and a lecture series that toured the world. Close The App, Make The Ting: Transformative Prompts for the Modern Artist brings together the best of the ideas and the projects they inspired. This book is for anyone producing or thinking of producing creative work, that needs something outside of ‘advice’, these are evergreen artistic prompts that will inspire new ways of approaching being an artist in the 2020s. The event will be a lecture with Elijah expanding on some of the popular ideas in the book, and doing an extensive Q&A with the audience.

Edinburgh
Thursday 6.45 –9:00 PM 20 February - 20 March 2025 £125 ( +£3.22 booking fee) *includes all materials Tutor: Jill M Boualaxai You can save booking fee and book directly. Copy and Paste Link Below https://www.lookanddraw.co.uk/service-page/rhythms-of-the-room-space-and-interiors?referral=service_list_widget This short course focuses on capturing interior spaces and architecture through drawing, emphasising perspective without overthinking technicalities. Set within the beautiful Victorian building of The Heart of Newhaven, students will respond to its rooms, hallways, and staircases. Throughout the course, students will build impressions of interior spaces by identifying rhythmic qualities such as horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and curved lines, as well as the repetition of shapes. They’ll also be encouraged to see and draw invisible lines that guide them through the space, finding connections between walls, floors, and objects rather than isolating elements. Students will learn to layer marks to explore and describe room volume, creating an illusion of space. By working on small drawings in sketchbooks and progressing through short, exploratory exercises, students will develop their skills and understanding of perspective, culminating in a resolved, larger-format drawing in the final session.

RESCHEDULED Paul Michael Henry & Pik Kei Wong | Residency Sharing | Dance Base, Scotland's National Centre for Dance
Feb 21, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Edinburgh
On the final day of their residency the artists will present early stage ideas explored through the week, followed by a conversation. This residency will continue work on a new piece by two of Scotland’s only Butoh dancers. Butoh’s founder, Hijikata Tatsumi, characterised it as a ‘dance of darkness’ and a ‘rebellion of the body’, concerned with liberating the human form from social conditioning and repression. We’re using these definitions to develop our first collaboration. Specifically, we’re beginning from Pik Kei’s experiences of artistic suppression in Hong Kong, where there is an ongoing crackdown on freedom of speech and creative expression. Our overall statement is about the secrets we carry in our flesh from our personal, cultural, and ancestral history, and the confusion of living in societies which pronounce themselves free but proscribe all but a limited range of life-ways (capitalist, production-oriented, and beholden to an infinite growth narrative which the Anthropocene shows is ecologically impossible). Is this really what we spent millions of years evolving for? And if our bodies are free, why are they boiling with incoherent rage / unexpressed tenderness? About Paul Michael Henry Paul Michael Henry is a dancer/musician/writer based in Glasgow. Their work is informed by Butoh dance, punk rock and ritual, and is performed all over the world. Their themes are political & spiritual, dealing with love, body neglect, environmental destruction and soul atrophy in consumerist society. Michael is also Artistic Director and creator of UNFIX, an evolving festival platforming ecologically committed performance, dance, music, film and discussion. UNFIX is intended as a contribution to the waking up of the human species to our predicament in an age of climate change, ecological threat and massive inequality. It is based in Glasgow and is ongoing there and in New York City, Bologna and Tokyo. About Pik Kei Wong Pik Kei Wong is a graduate of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Wong’s choreography and performances question stereotypes from a female perspective. Her works evoke a revaluation of attitudes by and towards – women, body and desires, especially sex. Major works include: when time limps, Woman.Body, 19841012 and Nook. With performances in Iceland, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore & China. Wong seeks to enrich her choreography through contemplation of social issues. She anticipates creating more works from the perspective of women that question traditional asian mindsets. Nicolette Macleod & Julia McGhee | Residency sharing | Dance Base, Scotland's National Centre for Dance
Feb 21, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Edinburgh
Julia and Nicolette invite you to be part of an interactive studio sharing on Friday 21st February 3-4pm. This will be a chance to participate in some of their research so far. During this residency, we will have begun a new piece of research taking themes of transformation and change as our starting point. We will explore aspects of our inner selves and our perceptions of the world around us through sound and movement and playing with the idea of taking ourselves apart, putting ourselves back together and, as a result, becoming different from the way we were before. We will use the studio as a playground for our imaginations with different areas of the room set up with opportunities for making sound, interacting with materials and moving, both in response to what we sense around us and following our own individual interests. We will be mapping our findings through writing and drawing, recorded conversations, audio recordings, photos and video. Supported through Dance Base’s Paid Artist Residency Programme

Edinburgh City Orchestra - Elgar and Tchaikovsky | St Giles' Cathedral
Feb 22, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Edinburgh
The Edinburgh City Orchestra, and conductor Peter Le Tissier, return to Edinburgh's St. Giles' Cathedral to present two works of intrigue, mystery, and powerful expression. Elgar's first major international success, the Enigma variations were first performed in 1899 under the composer's baton, before achieving international success within a few short years. A piece deeply layered with meaning, Elgar's theme-and-variations are, ostensibly, a portrait of the composer's 'friends pictured within'. Indeed, the title of each variation bears the initials of the person to whom it is dedicated, with whimsical characteristic reflected musically (the haughty laugh of a friend, the aggressive playing of an amateur pianist); but on a deeper level Elgar referred to the work as hiding a dark saying under the surface. The enigma of the popular title refers to Elgar's cryptic clue that the true theme of the work goes, but is not played and has led to many years of speculation as to the true theme . Answers have included Auld Lang Syne, themes from the operas of Mozart, or even a non-musical idea that connects the work. Whatever the solution to the riddle, the music has become iconic of a reawakening of British composition internationally - the dark, ominous opening theme contrasts with themes of bombast, heartfelt melodies (including the famous Nimrod theme) and finishing with a bombastic depiction the composer dedicated to himself. After the break, we perform one of Tchaikovksy's best-known and most deeply heartfelt romantic works - the 5th Symphony, in E Minor. Connected by a common theme across all four movements, the symphony is a work of extreme expressive clarity and, in true Tchaikovskian fashion, bounces between deep sorrow and bombastic joy. An opening movement prefaced with doleful clarinets sparks into energetic life with themes of various romantic, dance-like characters through to brassy, energetic wildness. The second movement is famous for its extensive horn solo. Tchaikovsky is at his most heartfelt in this passionate movement that reaches truly grand climaxes. The third movement, a waltz very much in the style of Tchaikovsky's ballets Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, provides a welcome break before the grand, overwhelming and optimistic finale to the work. Do be sure to secure your ticket to this special event fast, as numbers are limited. We hope to see you at the performance!
