Black Kids Love Math 2025 | The California Endowment
Aug 4, 2025 (UTC-7)
City of Los Angeles
Why is Black students' math literacy worse than other students?
Black Kids Love Math Addresses this head-on.
In 2023, we launched
FACTS BET ON ME
, featuring Black math experts who came and spoke about what they thought the issues were. Covering the basis of
ALL
students, the experts spoke about math educators taking the disparity of Black math education personally, and about the fact that black children have not moved off the bottom. Following this data from our first conference, we decided we couldn’t allow our discussions to become general. We didn't want it to be a kumbaya moment where people came in a room and felt
good
about talking about black children in math, when it's so
bad
.
When you look at it as a whole, at some point, you've got to say it has to do with what goes on in every classroom. You can't keep saying they're poor, or that they come from dysfunctional families, or that they’re living in poverty.
At some point, you've got to do the MATH.
Everyone was seeing it as black kids don't love math, don't do math, can't do math.
Black kids
DO
love math, but nobody was seeing that. So we flipped the script and evolved into
Black Kids Love Math.
Late-2023, we began to look at it through the eyes of the children rather than the eyes of the educators. Recruiting research interns interested in the matter, they helped us begin to understand how to tell the narrative differently.
Joshua Montefalcon, who joined us from USC, said one of the first things that we have to address (post-pandemic) was the health disparities Black children and their families faced. He said that you cannot devolve that away from the way that we educate our children. Tiara Wicks, another influential intern, said, We've got to look at the money. Millions of dollars goes to educate Black children in math every year. Why is it that, if these teachers are getting a plethora of professional development, our children are still not getting the level of professional teaching that requires them to achieve math proficiency?
Following, our Director of Math Projects, Gabriela Mitchell, wrote the BKLM grant that detailed our research strategy. The idea she had was simple, however beyond efficacious, “let’s ask Black kids what they think”. Seeing what it’s become, and presenting the work in the field, everyone's like–When's your research coming out?
Ultimately, that's the one thing that policymakers have yet to see or hear is the children tell the story.
We're going to be the first to do that.
The patrons facilitating the platform our work is built upon.
After receiving Gabriela’s grant, the National Center for Youth Law graciously got involved.
Additionally, the American Institute of Mathematics (AIM), a national research body examining math across the country. Wrote an article about looking to address cultural pedagogy, particularly around students of color. Which led our Executive Director, Yolande, to write to the editor and say, Hey. This is what we do. Why don't we talk? We work with the kids themselves AND their families, and they had a keen interest towards that innovation. Following a conversation with David Crombeck, a Director at AIM, about their math circles for teachers, and now our own ‘Family Math Circles’, we received confirmation from AIM on the funding for our project!
This created discussions with Black families about how they interact with their children in mathematics outside of school. The team then met with a key figure, Joe Boaler. Who added Chapter 14 on ‘Family and Community Engagement’ into the California Mathematics Framework, which was adopted by the State Board of Education on July 12, 2023. Due to her feeling that, after seeing our data, an essential piece was missing.
Nobody was talking about the role
FAMILY
plays in the development of their children. We knew that they’d been left out and we aim to exemplify that.

QUICK NOTE - WE WILL ALSO HAVE SOME SINGLES FROM A FEW OTHER NEARBY CALIFORNIA CITIES IN ATTENDANCE TO MAKE SURE WE HAVE A NICE BIG CROWD AND A MORE FUN EVENT BUT WE WILL MAKE SURE YOU MEET EVERYONE FROM YOUR CITY AND WE WILL HAVE PLENTY OF PEOPLE FROM YOUR CITY ATTENDING.
WHAT IS THIS EVENT ALL ABOUT?
This is entirely new and revolutionary type of event for singles! We love the idea of traditional speed dating but sometimes it's hard to come up with things to talk about. That's why at a Dating Games Online Speed Dating Game Night you'll have fun, easy games to play to get to know everyone instead of dealing with the usual dating "job interview" type questions. We find that it's a much better way to get to know someone! You'll be put in Zoom breakout rooms with a small group of singles and you'll play games that will help you get to know each other. Some rounds you may be with small groups of 4 to 7 people and some rounds you may be 1 on 1 with someone of the opposite gender much like traditional speed dating. Essentially, you'll work with the other people as a team and compare answers with the other teams. Each round we change up the teams to make sure you get to meet and get to know everyone in attendance (we explain the games in more detail below).
HOW THE MATCHING WORKS:
Similar to traditional speed dating, at the end of the event the host will explain how you can keep in contact with anyone that you are interested in seeing again. We allow people to match as "friends" so you can meet wingmen and/or wingwomen at this event and we also allow people to match with people as potential love interests whom they'd like to see again for future dates.
AN EMAIL WE RECENTLY RECEIVED:
I wanted to write to thank you for putting on such a a great event. I attended the speed dating game night last week and it was so much fun! I wanted a change up from the dating apps and this event hit was exactly what I hoped for. Your host was so nice and welcoming. I met a lot of people and everyone was really friendly. I am staying in touch with a few people from the event and actually set up a date for this upcoming weekend with one of the guys I met during the event. Once again, just want to thank you for holding such a quality event!
- Laura
WHAT KIND OF GAMES WILL WE BE PLAYING?
The fun games are set up to break the ice, help you gauge compatibility, make quality connections and to have a really fun night. An example game we like to play is "Dating Feud" which is similar to the popular prime time TV show we all know. In this game you and your group will be asked fun relationship style questions like, "Name a gift that women love men to give them". You will work together with a small group of singles to come up with what you think is the most popular answer and then you'll find out if you got the top answer. Another game we might play is called Blank Slate. In Blank Slate the host will show you a word followed by a blank. For example: Chicken _________. You'll write down a word that follows the word Chicken such as "Soup". Essentially you're trying to predict what will be a popular answer. We do different fun games at each event we throw! Another game we play is "Would You Rather" where we ask you fun questions like "Would you rather live the rest of your life without ever being able to watch a movie ever again or would you rather never be able to listen to any song/music again?". You answer the question and then you have to try and pick the most popular answer. You're then brought back from the breakout room into the main room to hear how everyone else answered the question. It's so much fun!
Thousands of people have met at our events and we've witnessed countless relationships and friendships formed. In fact, because you really get to know people during the games, the chances of meeting someone at a Dating Games Online Speed Dating Game Night are much higher than online dating apps or traditional speed dating events.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT THE EVENT:
"As a busy professional, I just don't have time to get out and meet people as much as I'd like so this event was like a Godsend for me. It was a refreshingly fantastic experience." - Jennifer S.
"What a fabulous concept. I met some great people and I started dating someone I met at the event." - Hannah M.
"That was an absolute blast!" - Jonathan T.
"The games are the perfect way to tell if you have chemistry with the other people." - Emma D.
WHY THIS EVENT WORKS!
For many years we organized in person traditional speed dating events. While waiting for everyone to show up, the host would do some icebreaker style games to "Kill time" until everyone arrived. We noticed something fascinating begin to happen. People got to know each other better and made more connections during the games than they did during the actual speed dating rounds! The games sparked so much conversation and laughs that we thought, "Wow, we should make an entire event like this!". And that is how our Dating Games Online Speed Dating Game Night events were born.
QUICK NOTE: THESE EVENTS WILL LIKELY SELL OUT BY EVENT TIME AND WE HAVE LIMITED SPOTS AVAILABLE AT EACH EVENT SO GRAB YOUR TICKET ASAP!

Alchemy and the Art of Failure, talk by Eliza Swann | Philosophical Research Society
Aug 5, 2025 (UTC-7)
City of Los Angeles
This talk explores how alchemy, often dismissed for its perceived "failures" to create elixirs of immortality and gold in laboratories, actually offers a powerful lesson: failure can offer more creative, cooperative, and magical ways of being in the world. Alchemists like Hennig Brand, John Dee, and Lady Isabella Cortese may not have succeeded in their literal quests for the elusive elixir of life or the transmutation of lead into gold, but they sparked something greater than their original goals. Drawing from Jack Halberstam's "The Queer Art of Failure" and the history of alchemy, we will examine how missing the mark can open up exciting new ways of being alive. We will conclude with a simple ritual to honor our own beautiful failures. This talk is open to anyone, regardless of their level of experience with alchemy.

City of Los Angeles
// about \\
Created by
Allie Hoffman
as part of her masters degree thesis work at Columbia University’s Spirit Mind Body Institute, ‘the feels’ is a 3-hour evening that includes an 80 minute facilitated experience.
The format builds off the work of Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, Dr Martha Eddy, the Buddha + the Tavistock Institute - among others.
‘The feels’ level 1 experience guides you through pairings that include meditations, prompts, positive reflections, and somatic elements like eye gazes + hugs.
‘The feels’ believes that =>
Better relating is possible
.
Your body holds infinite wisdom, and tapping into that to determine if you want to connect deeper with someone, gives you more valuable ‘information’ than head-based read outs like where someone lives or where they work;
Online dating has left us treating each other badly; the way back is to show up with kindness, and care – which we facilitate you into expressions of;
Co-regulation is a powerful place to be – and we’re here to help you experience it;
Discomfort is OK. We believe if you’re able to sit at the edge of discomfort, and self-soothe - that it empowers a sense of self and pride that fortifies you;
If all you do at ‘the feels’ is write a love letter to you - we’re really happy w that. We don’t promise you that you’ll meet the love of your life - but we can guarantee that you’ll walk away with a sense of your own amazing’ness. We’re really here for
that
.
More things to know about ‘the feels’ =>
Our facilitators are professionals holding masters degrees (or higher) in the fields of mental health, movement, therapy, performance, and sexual health - among others;
Your ticket includes unlimited light bites, alcoholic + non alc beverage options;
Since inception + in partnership with Columbia, survey data we have collected shows that
70% of all ‘feels’ level 1 attendees will walk out the contact info for someone they’re excited about
;
We’re here to build a community of people who believe - like we do - that its possible to treat each other better. Your purchasing this ticket opens that world to you. We bring it to life via WhatsApp communities + a series of offerings only available to Level 1 alumni.

// the who \\
this edition of 'the feels' is for ppl who identify as: practicing / exploring / engaging in non monogamy, polyamory, relationship anarchy, non-traditional relationship structure + its (also) for you if you're exploring mindful connection; if you're in new and ever expanding expressions of your sexuality; + if you're exploring attraction and desire + one of your core - if not the core - value you hold is honesty/integrity/commitment to truth.
This version of the 'feels' is open to all regardless of age, religious identity, race, body type, gender identity or expression, or sexual orientation.
We have very intentionally made this ENM feels a queer friendly event, to honor + uplift the very significant overlap between our queer community and our ENM community! This means that participants are welcome to explore + invite pairings that best align with their desires, regardless of gender parity in the room.
// what people are saying \\
“I felt open, grounded, happy, and optimistic, not just about the connections made, but also about life in general.”
“This was a radical departure from how I usually experience dating and attraction.”
“As someone who struggles with emotional intimacy I truly enjoyed the event. It forced me to push through the walls I put up and engage someone in a way I usually wouldn’t until much later in a dating relationship.”
“I remember the change in the room as each activity went on—I could feel the collective self-regulation.”
// pls note \\
We do not offer refunds, as we're a small business and unable to accommodate refund or credit requests for future events.
However, you’re welcome to transfer your ticket to the same event in the same category. For example, if you purchased a Female ticket for NY Feels 12, you can transfer or sell it to another female attendee for that same event. You are responsible for finding a replacement. Once the switch is confirmed, please email us their name and email.
While we typically don't offer credits for future events, we’re more flexible with our Queer and ENM events as we continue to grow those communities.
