History of Lench's Trust | Birmingham & Midland Institute

Jun 30, 2025 (UTC+1)
Birmingham
Cultural Experiences
Lench’s Trust is a remarkable and positive symbol of continuity in a city of seemingly perpetual transformation. In 1525 in Tudor Birmingham, the wealthy and childless William Lenche decided that the income from his estates should be distributed in “warke of charyte”. Since then, generations of Trustees and officials have carried out his wishes diligently, faithfully, and thoughtfully. Originally acting as an important aspect of local government through repairing roads and bridges, they gradually became more active in the provision of almshouses for those in need, and now Lench’s Trust provides a host of later living services for people living in Birmingham. Five hundred years on and having successfully adapted to changing needs, Lench’s Trust continues its valuable charitable work in Birmingham. Professor Carl Chinn and Lenchs Trust Chief Executive will take us through the remarkable history of Birmingham’s Oldest Chairty Information Source: The Birmingham & Midland Institute | eventbrite

Poppy T. Perry in Conversation with Cheddar Gorgeous - Birmingham | Waterstones

Jul 4, 2025 (UTC+1)
Birmingham
Cultural Experiences
Join us for a brilliant evening with Poppy T. Perry, discussing her fantastic debut Dead Real . Grab your zom-stompers and a spare pair of pants, shit’s about to get real… Poppy will be in conversation with Cheddar Gorgeous. About the Book Nora Inkwell is totally, completely, absolutely going to tell her best friend and fellow horror movie superfan, Ruby, that she’s in love with her. It doesn't matter that Baxter from Body Combat wrote on the college wall that Nora's frigid. Or that Ruby is more interested in losing her lesbian v-plates before they start university. And it certainly doesn't matter that Nora's old school friends said that all bisexuals are attention-seeking wannabes!... It might matter that the entire town has turned into flesh-eating zombies.Guess there's no time like the (deadly, dangerous, zombie-swamped) present to confess your *undying* love. About the Author Poppy (she/her) is a magnet to anything fast-paced and playful. She collects chaos like a magpie collects shiny things. This creates a fun chaotic energy that is a key element in her Young Adult storytelling. When not writing, Poppy can be found reading YA novels, comics, or drawing while listening to REALLY LOUD MUSIC. Poppy has come out as queer more times than she cares to remember but found she kept being shoved back into the closet. Each time she had to build up the courage to climb out again, and it was exhausting. The last time Poppy came out, she took an axe to her own personal closet and smashed it to splinters before setting it alight, just for good measure. The resulting desire to break down heteronormative worldviews and help others find the confidence to live their best life is at the heart of her work. Poppy lives as a landlocked mermaid in the West Midlands, taking every opportunity to run away to the coast. She also works as a consulting artist and art technician at a sixth-form college, where she loves helping young creatives. About the Chair Cheddar Gorgeous (A.K.A Dr Michael Atkins), is a Drag performer, visual artist and academic based in Manchester. He is a founding member of Manchester’s monthly home of the fabulous, Cha Cha Boudoir, and defines himself on Instagram as a Unicorn and super-hero and idealist. In his performance work, Cheddar is particularly interested in disrupting the gender conventions often inherent in UK drag, by mixing and playing with signifiers of masculine and feminine beauty. Cheddar believes that drag has potential beyond a form of entertainment, to be a social and political tool which engenders community growth, furthers the work of charities and social causes and is a shifting space where all manner of identities, feelings and experiences can be expressed. His doctoral work in anthropology focused on the spatial multiplicity of contemporary urban gay villages and incorporated the use of graphic novella as a form of ethnographic storytelling.Cheddar brings to the discussion an interest in how drag can allow us to look at beauty beyond gender, as a form of creative becoming through which people can transform different facets of their identity, their flesh and even their species. President's Address: "What is Life?" | Birmingham & Midland Institute

'What is Life?' An Address by the 169th President of The Birmingham & Midland Institute, Sir Paul Nurse OM CH FRS FMedSci HonFREng HonFBA MAE In this lecture Sir Paul considers the question “What is Life?” by discussing five great ideas of biology, ranging from the ‘Cell’ to ‘the Logic of Life’. By considering these concepts a direction of travel is set towards a definition of life. About Sir Paul Paul Nurse was born in Norfolk and raised in London, where he attended Harrow County Grammar School. In 1970 he received a degree in biology at the University of Birmingham and a PhD in 1973 from the University of East Anglia for research on amino acid pools in Candida utilis . In 1979 he set up his own laboratory at the University of Sussex. Here he developed techniques that allowed him to clone the cdc2 gene from fission yeast and to show that it encoded a protein kinase. In 1984, Paul joined the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (ICRF, which became Cancer Research UK in 2002) and in 1987 he identified the human cdc2 homologous gene which codes for the cyclin dependent kinase CDK1. He left ICRF in 1988 to chair the Department of Microbiology at the University of Oxford. Here he continued his work on the cell cycle and also initiated new research areas to study cell form and genomics. He returned to the ICRF as Director of Research in 1993, and in 1996 became Director General of the ICRF and in 2002 the Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK. In 2003, Paul became President of Rockefeller University in New York City where he continued to work on the cell cycle, cell form and genomics of fission yeast. In 2010, he became the first Director and Chief Executive of the Francis Crick Institute in London and served as President of the Royal Society 2010-15 and was re-elected in 2024 and will be the first person to serve as President of the Royal Society twice since the nineteenth century. Awards Paul was awarded the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine along with Leland Hartwell and Tim Hunt for their discoveries of protein molecules that control the division (duplication) of cells in the cell cycle. In 1989 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) and in 1995 he received the Royal Society Royal Medal and became a foreign associate of the US National Academy of Sciences. He received the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research in 1998 and was knighted in 1999. He was awarded the French Legion d'Honneur in 2002, the Royal Society Copley Medal in 2005, and the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun in 2018. He was a member of the Council for Science and Technology advising Prime Ministers from 2000 to 2015. In 2013 he became the winner of the Albert Einstein World Award of Science conferred by the World Cultural Council, and since 2017 has been a Chief Scientific Advisor of the European Commission. His nomination for the Royal Society reads: "Distinguished for his studies of genes, which regulate the cell cycle in fission yeast and higher organisms. He developed techniques for transformation, gene replacement and expression vectors in the fission yeast S. pombe . He identified two major controls in the cell cycle and he cloned and characterised genes involved in commitment to DNA synthesis or mitosis notably the 'start' gene cdc 2. He showed that cdc 2 encodes a protein kinase which is potentially regulated by phosphorylation. He identified, cloned and sequenced the human equivalent of cdc 2 and showed that its sequence is extensively conserved from yeasts to man. Together with Maller and Lohka, he has now shown that purified preparations of the vertebrate cell-cycle regulator 'maturation promoting factor' contain the product encoded by the cdc 2 homologue." Paul has received over 70 honorary degrees and fellowships including those from universities where he was trained - Birmingham, East Anglia, Edinburgh and Sussex - as well as Oxford and Cambridge. He is also a fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and of the British Academy.
