Comedy Incubator - You Belong on Stage Cohort 5 Graduation Showcase! | Busboys and Poets
Apr 17, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Washington D.C.
The Washington, D.C. area has a thriving comedy scene. As in most places, the majority of standup comedy shows in DC are primarily made up of cis male comedians. Amplifying the diverse voices of the DMV is critical, and we want people of all genders to know that they belong on stage.
In spring of 2023, Grassroots Comedy created and launched an incubator program for underrepresented genders in comedy -- it was so much fun that we did it again and again, and this show features graduates from our fifth cohort of students! Now's your chance to see some of the funniest new people taking the stage in DC before they get famous.
Proceeds from this show will go towards operational expenses of the
You Belong on Stage Standup Comedy Incubator
, and will help make comedy in the nation's capital (and beyond) more representative of the people who actually live there.
Cohort 5 Graduates:
Annie Kling
Avery Miller
Cynthia Via
Elizabeth Smith
Em Knepp
Kanyinsola Ajayi
Meera Kallapura
Micaiah Kimble-Glover
Rebecca Jacobs
Shreya Datta

Africa Fintech Summit 2025 | Halcyon Georgetown LLC
Apr 24, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Washington D.C.
Join other innovators, startups, corporations, financial service providers, tech companies, investors, and regulators as they share knowledge, zoom in on the trends, and opportunities informing the direction of fintech in Africa at the Africa Fintech Summit, Washington D.C, United States of America.
Since 2018, twice a year, with the exception of 2020 and 2021 that saw only one edition of the Africa Fintech Summit each, we’ve brought together innovators from different financial and technology verticals to engage in thoughtfully designed community-oriented experiences. Each April, AFTS is a headlining sidelines event that holds during the Spring Meetings of The World Bank/IFC. And in November, another edition takes place in a selected African country.
The objectives of these meetings have been to foster ecosystem-building conversations, knowledge-sharing, and collaboration between key stakeholders across the African and global fintech value chain. AFTS has always been a forum where innovators, investors, regulators, and thought leaders can define the future of Africa's fintech industry and map out ways that critical stakeholders can optimize for success. The outstanding results stemming from all previous eight editions of the Africa Fintech Summit have made a seventh meeting inevitable, and so we return to Washington D.C. this year.
AFTSDC2023 is the 9th edition of the Africa Fintech Summit and will take place on the 13th of April, 2023. Venue yet to be announced.
The thesis that drove AFTS in 2022 is what we have come to call, 'the Africanization of Global Fintech.' This theme encompasses a variety of trends that have emerged in recent months including, the legitimization of African fintech as a global asset class, the expansion of African fintech beyond the shores of the continent, and the 'Africanization' of the sector itself through an increased focus on homegrown tech talent and locally available funding mechanisms. 2023 plans to leverage current trends and happenings, as well as provide innovators with a driving philosophy.
And with over 80+ Trend-Defining Speakers and 1000+ Attendees from 40+ Countries projected to be in attendance, AFTSDC2022 promises to be the perfect stage for these conversations. Also, as usual, we’ve lined up a slew of value-laden sessions you can look forward to, including:
