The Nuts and Bolts of Text Typography In-Person Workshop | Letterform Archive
Sep 14–Sep 15, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Francisco
The text block is fundamental to creating any typographic system, whether on the page or on screen. But what typeface to use and at what size? How do we determine line length and leading? And what about readability and hierarchy? Over the course of two days, we will examine typographic details as well as overarching principles from the letter to the page. We will begin by considering the interdependence between type size, leading, line length, ragging, and justification. And after an introduction to traditional methods of shaping the page, we will set continuous text within the grids of a single-column and multicolumn page. We will be drawing from the extraordinary resources available to us at the Letterform Archive, in particular their library of historic type specimen books. This two-day in-person workshop is for anyone in need of a refresher on setting a well-behaved text block. Basic knowledge of InDesign is required. Learning Outcomes Learn to pay attention to the details of letterforms.Become mindful of the intervals of space between letters (kerning and tracking).Refine awareness of typographic grain, color, and density as well as the silhouette of the text block.Understand how to establish hierarchy and organization in page layout.Set type well—and with more confidence!Angie Wang is a designer and educator who specializes in typography and typographic systems. FREE EVENT/ NO TICKET REQUIRED. My Father Xu Beihong: Music Inspired by His Art by Xu Fangfang 我的父親徐悲鸿:他的藝術喚起的音樂,来自作家:徐芳芳 Join us for a special event at the San Francisco Public Library where Xu Fangfang will share her musical compositions inspired by the art of her father, Xu Beihong. Experience a unique blend of art and music with presentation in this intimate setting. Don't miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the creativity and passion of Xu Fangfang's work. See you there! Xu Beihong (1895-1953), Chinese artist and art educator, is widely known as the father of modern Chinese painting. His animal paintings often subtly express deeper meanings through his use of analogy, which achieves the richest expression found in traditional Chinese painting. Jiang Wenye (1910-1983),Chinese composer and music educator, was among the earliest to write Chinese music for Western orchestra and piano. Xu Fangfang will introduce her new book, Xu Beihong’s Color-And-Ink Paintings-Piano Concerto by Jiang Wenye Discovered After Half a Century, describing how Jiang Wenye’s hand-written score of the piano concerto portraying Xu Beihong's color-and-ink paintings was lost and brought to life after its recovery half a century later. As the first composer to bring Xu Beihong’s paintings to the piano and orchestral stage, Jiang Wenye’s work adds richness to the use of analogy in Xu Beihong’s two ink brush rooster paintings. The publication of Xu Beihong’s Color-And-Ink Paintings, including selected color prints of Xu Beihong’s masterpieces and the full score and two-piano score of the third movement, demonstrated the two masters’ historic integration of Chinese and Western art. The concerto’s world premiere on October 22, 2022, in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, showed the successful artistic integration of Jiang Wenye’s music with Xu Beihong’s paintings to the entire world. Beihong China Arts - Website. Xu Fangfang will perform two Chinese piano pieces related to the book, present high-quality images of Xu Beihong's artwork and conduct book sale and signing after her talk. Location: Lower Level, Latino/Hispenic Room, San Francisco Public Library, 100 Larkin Street, San Francisco, CA, USA

PLAYTIME: Movement Improvisation with Khadidiatou Bangoura | Joe Goode Performance Group
Sep 25, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
San Francisco
PLAYTIME: Movement Improvisation with Khadidiatou Bangoura Wednesday September 25, 2024, 6pm - 8pm at the Joe Goode Annex (401 Alabama Street, SF) Sliding scale: $20-50 | Presented by alloyed mettles. If you wish to contribute to our future curation of visiting artists like Khadi to the Bay Area and have the means, please consider paying at the fair and supporter rates. WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: Using various tools based on improvisational tasks and set movement material, we will deconstruct and practice musicality and rhythm as a means of deepening our listening, sharpening our intuition and enriching the expressiveness and playfulness of our dance. We approach dance as a sensory experience transmitted through descriptions, tactile interactions as well as auditory and vocal impulses to experience creativity, freedom of movement and our personal dance style. We wake up our spirits to allow us to uninhibitedly share our dance and to receive inspiration and impulses that allow us to spontaneously create and compose together in real time. Elements of this practice are based on David Zambrano’s ‘Soul Project’ and on his composition method ‘Let’s Dance’. KHADIDATOU BANGOURA uses dance as a tool to analyze our relationships to ourselves, to our environment and with each other - for new narratives and more self-reflection. Her work is influenced by her study of flying low, passing through and improvisation with David Zambrano and Horacio Macuacua. She is interested in musicality, rhythm, perception and modes of perception. Recently she has been researching possibilities to increase the accessibility of dance training and dance performances for blind people, aside from audio description. BELINDA HE and KARLA QUINTERO are alloyed mettles, a collaborative duo that convenes multigenerational & cross-cultural communities of practice to support longevity in dance. As alloyed mettles, they curate, teach, create and perform. Their collaboration formed in response to a vacuum they experienced as 40+ year old women seeking to continue dancing dynamically. Their practice draws from their shared and individual histories in improvisation, partnering, and somatics across genres to grow their capacity to listen beyond the auditory realm. They embrace their differences in physique, dance training, personalities, and culture as alloyed strengths that support their drive for a resilient future, allowing them and their community to age as they dream together, in dance.
