Bound magic is deadly. Left vulnerable to relentless witch hunters, Ameris will go any length to unbind her magic. Even bargain with Xander, the dangerously attractive fae heir. Caught in a whirlwind of ambition and lust, Ameris agrees to save him in exchange for learning fae magic. Allies are scarce. Trust is a luxury. With the witch hunters closing in, Ameris and Xander enact a blood bond, transporting them to the fae kingdom of Elysium. In a world torn by ancient vendettas and ruled by the shadow king, Oberon, Ameris discovers her unbound magic may be key to the throne. Unbound & used for her power. Xander will use any tool in his quest to rule - including the sexual tension between them, magnified by their blood bond. Oberon will do whatever it takes to keep the throne and make Ameris his. And he's not afraid to play dirty to win. The throne is the prize. Lust is the game. Captured by Oberon, Ameris is seduced by the very darkness she's warned about. Torn between the intoxicating allure of Oberon's shadow magic and her intense bond with Xander, Ameris is left with no choice: Make her claim. Or be bound by blood & shadow. Shaker Harmonies: Celebrating 250 Years of the Shakers in America | Saint Mark's Episcopal Cathedral
Nov 10, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
Seattle
The Tudor Choir, Doug Fullington, conductor, Saint Mark's Women's Compine, Rebekah Gilmore, conductorThe Tudor Choir, directed by Doug Fullington, and Saint Mark’s Women’s Compline Choir, directed by Rebekah Gilmore, will sing arrangements of Shaker hymns by Kevin Siegfried spanning the last 250 years in a celebration of their music, and their continuing peaceful, artistic, and all-welcoming movement. Please note that in-person ticket pre-sales end 90 minutes prior to the concert. Tickets will still be available at the door. Founded by Doug Fullington in 1993, the Tudor Choir is a Seattle-based vocal chamber ensemble hailed as “a superb choir” (Gramophone) and “a choir to watch” (Fanfare). The choir most recently was a resident ensemble at historic Blessed Sacrament Church in Seattle’s University District from 2008 to 2015 and currently gives periodic performances. The choir has also been Artists-in-Residence at St. Mark’s Cathedral, Seattle; a Resident Ensemble at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Medina; and a Guest Choral Artist at St. James Cathedral, Seattle. The Tudor Choir specializes in Renaissance polyphony and also has been acclaimed for its performances of early American and contemporary music. The choir has performed extensively throughout the Pacific Northwest, including concert appearances in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Portland, Oregon, and has made guest appearances with the Mark Morris Dance Group, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Seattle Baroque Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, and Early Music Guild of Seattle. The choir made its East Coast debut in December 2012, performing at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and in Pennsylvania. The Tudor Choir has made a number of recordings for the Loft, Gothic, and Scribe labels. The Tudor Choir also has cultivated relationships with a number of world-renowned conductors and especially with Peter Phillips, director of the Tallis Scholars. Mr. Phillips has conducted the choir in a number of concerts, including joint performances with members of the Tallis Scholars each year at the Tallis Scholars Summer School USA in Seattle since its inception in 2005. The choir also has sung under the direction of Stephen Cleobury (King's College, Cambridge), Martin Haselböck (Vienna), Paul Hillier (Hilliard Ensemble, Theatre of Voices), and Andrew Parrott (Taverner Choir). In the summer of 2019, the Office of Compline was chanted by an ensemble of women for the first time in the six-decade history of Compline at Saint Mark's Cathedral, Seattle. These beautifully-sung services were deeply moving to many. In the word of choir director Rebekah Gilmore, We have many decades—generations worth of women who have wanted to sing Compline at Saint Mark's. And so the decision was made to make the Women's Compline Choir an annual tradition at Saint Mark's each summer. In the summer of 2020, of course, a gathering of the full choir was not possible, and the Women's Compline Choir was represented by just four solo voices. In the summer of 2021, a full complement of singers chanted the office, but the service remained closed to the public. At last in 2022, a full choir featuring some of the finest choral singers in the region returned to chant a service open to one and all. As in the past, the services featured special repertoire for women's voices, including world-premiere compositions

Seattle
In this powerful debut memoir, Neesha Powell-Ingabire chips away at coastal Georgia’s facade of beaches and golden marshes to recover undertold Black history alongside personal and family stories.Third Place Books is delighted to welcomewriter and community organizer Neesha Powell-Ingabire to our Seward Park store for a discussion of her debut memoir, Come By Here: A Memoir in Essays from Georgia’s Geechee Coast! They will be joined in conversation by local writer Jen Soriano. This event is free and open to the public. For important updates, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! Having trouble registering? See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. Tickets:This event is free to attend. Registration is required in advance. About Come By Here. . .In May of 2020, Neesha Powell-Ingabire’s hometown became infamous after a viral video spread of white vigilantes killing a Black man named Ahmaud Arbery. The small coastal city of Brunswick, Georgia became synonymous with this tragedy, which, along with the police murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, spurred an international movement that summer to end white supremacy. Neesha Powell-Ingabire, a millennial journalist, essayist, and organizer, grew up in Brunswick feeling alienated as a Black queer and disabled girl in a fraught racial and political environment. Come By Here: A Memoir in Essays from Georgia’s Geechee Coast traces the genealogy of systemic racial violence while paying homage to the area’s long history of Black resistance and culture keeping. Powell-Ingabire probes her personal connection to past and present: the victorious campaign to remove Brunswick’s Confederate monument out of a public park, modern echoes of ancestral practices such as farming, fishing, and basket weaving, the fight for Geechee land in Sapelo Island, and the mass suicide of the Igbo people, who drowned themselves in Dunbar Creek rather than be enslaved. In Come By Here, Neesha Powell-Ingabire reckons with their home’s collective history and their own history as a truth-telling exercise in line with Audre Lorde’s advice: “It is better to speak.” Neesha Powell-Ingabire(she/they) is a coastal Georgia-born-and-raised movement journalist, essayist, community & cultural organizer, resource mobilizer, cat parent, spouse, and auntie living in Atlanta/occupied Muscogee territory. She reports on the justice movements of the Black, trans, queer, and Southern communities to which she belongs and writes essays to recover her own history and the histories of her ancestors and their ancestral homes. Neesha’s writings have been published in various online and print publications, including Harper’s Bazaar, the Oxford American, Scalawag, and VICE. She recently graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Georgia College. Learn more about Neesha's work at neeshawrites.com. Rebecca Nagle discusses "By the Fire We Carry" | Seattle Public Library-Central Library
Nov 13, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
Seattle
Presented by The Seattle Public Library, with suppor from The Seattle Public Library Foundation, The Gary and Connie Kunis Foundation, and promotional partner The Seattle Times. Accessibility: Masking is encouraged, by request of the author. Assistive listening technology is available in the auditorium. The Library can provide accommodations for people with disabilities at Library events. Please contact LEAP at least seven days before the event to request accommodations. About the Book: A powerful work of reportage and American history that braids the story of the forced removal of Native Americans onto treaty lands in the nation’s earliest days, and a small-town murder in the 1990s that led to a Supreme Court ruling reaffirming Native rights to that land more than a century later. Before 2020, American Indian reservations made up roughly 55 million acres of land in the United States. Nearly 200 million acres are reserved for National Forests—in the emergence of this great nation, our government set aside more land for trees than for Indigenous peoples. In the 1830s Muscogee people were rounded up by the US military at gunpoint and forced into exile halfway across the continent. At the time, they were promised this new land would be theirs for as long as the grass grew and the waters ran. But that promise was not kept. When Oklahoma was created on top of Muscogee land, the new state claimed their reservation no longer existed. Over a century later, a Muscogee citizen was sentenced to death for murdering another Muscogee citizen on tribal land. His defense attorneys argued the murder occurred on the reservation of his tribe, and therefore Oklahoma didn’t have the jurisdiction to execute him. Oklahoma asserted that the reservation no longer existed. In the summer of 2020, the Supreme Court settled the dispute. Its ruling that would ultimately underpin multiple reservations covering almost half the land in Oklahoma, including Nagle’s own Cherokee Nation. Here Rebecca Nagle recounts the generations-long fight for tribal land and sovereignty in eastern Oklahoma. By chronicling both the contemporary legal battle and historic acts of Indigenous resistance, “By the Fire We Carry” stands as a landmark work of American history. The story it tells exposes both the wrongs that our nation has committed and the Native-led battle for justice that has shaped our country. About the Speaker:
Rebecca Nagle is an award-winning reporter, writer, and citizen of Cherokee Nation. She is the creator and host of Crooked Media’s chart-topping podcast This Land. Her work has been featured in The Atlantic, the Washington Post, the Guardian, USA Today, Teen Vogue, the Huffington Post, among other outlets. Nagle lives in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

Shahzoda Samarqandi and translator Shelley Fairweather-Vega — 'Mothersland' | Third Place Books
Nov 13, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
Seattle
I don't remember exactly whether my youth ended, and then the USSR, or if it was the other way around. But I do know that those two things are connected. Now I'm left here between two truths: the truth of the land, and the truth of the sea. Third Place Books is thrilled to welcome Shahzoda Samarqandi and translatorShelley Fairweather-Vega to our Ravenna store for a discussion of Mothersland. This event is free and open to the public. Copies of Mothersland will be available for purchase in store at the event. In Mothersland, Shahzoda Samarqandi, the award-winning Tajik activist, poet and novelist from Uzbekistan, subverts a deeply-rooted metaphorical system in Persian literary culture: the land as woman. A socially entrenched metaphor that has framed conquest as male and the conquered as female becomes upended in Samarqandi's lyrical and powerful account of life at a moment of ecological and imperial collapse. One of the first climate novels composed in Tajik Persian, Mothersland is now available in Shelley Fairweather-Vega's bright and engaging English translation. Shahzoda Samarqandi is a crucial voice in our world today!

Click here for more about our COVID-19 policies for in-person events. Having trouble registering? See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. Tickets:This event is free to attend. For important updates, registration is highly recommended in advance. About Mothersland. . .This haunting novel by the world's leading Tajik-language novelist is a time-twisting reverie on the bond between mothers and daughters. Growing up in late Soviet-era Uzbekistan, Mahtab feels more at home in the cotton field-and in the past, as depicted in her mother's diary-than at school, where the books in the library are rewritten with every new political trend. When a Russian film crew comes to town to make a movie about cotton, starring Mahtab in the role of her hero-worker mother, Mahtab suffers an accident that scrambles her memory. As she struggles to recover, she must untangle her mother's story from her own, and navigate the hazy contours of memory, love, storytelling, and country to finally find herself. Shahzoda Samarqandiwas born in Samarqand, Uzbekistan. Her taboo-breaking novels have brought her international recognition. After working for Tajik-language newspapers and television as well as the BBC Persian service, Samarqandi moved to the Netherlands where she served as an editor for Central Asia and Afghanistan at Radio Zamaneh, and she has worked to protect female activists and journalists in Afghanistan.

Registration is required in advance. About Impossible Things. . .Offering an intimate account of intergenerational grief, Miller Oberman’s new collection of poetry, Impossible Things, explores his experiences as both a transgender child and father. Oberman weaves in passages from his own deceased father’s unpublished memoir to engage with the mysterious drowning of his eldest brother, Joshua, at age two, a tragedy that cast a shadow over his childhood. He depicts his own youth and parenthood in the context of his father’s trauma, employing queer and trans theory and experimental poetic forms to challenge and expand discourse around fatherhood and masculinity. Oberman moves beyond an attempt to solve the mystery of Joshua’s death and interrogates how much we can ever know about our forebears or understand their impacts on our lives. Impossible Things offers a necessary intervention into the well-worn terrain of fatherhood/boyhood memoir and functions as a living elegy, communicating with the past, the dead, and the unknowable while speaking to the possibilities for healing intergenerational trauma. Miller Oberman is the author of Impossible Things, forthcoming from Duke University Press, 2024 and The Unstill Ones, Princeton Series of Contemporary Poets, 2017. He has received a number of awards for his poetry, including a Ruth Lilly Fellowship, the 92Y Discovery Prize, a NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship, and Poetry magazine’s John Frederick Nims Memorial Prize for Translation. Poems from Impossible Things have appeared in The New Yorker, Poetry, The Hopkins Review, Poem-a-Day, and Foglifter. About In Defense of Ska . .With an additional 30,000 words of compelling stories, research, and analysis, music journalist and In Defense of Ska podcast creator/host Aaron Carnes presents the case that ska never died, by jumping headfirst into ska’s “lost years,” i.e., the period after the ’90s third-wave ska boom. New topics covered include LA’s ongoing vibrant traditional ska scene and how young Latinos are keeping the ska torch aflame, how the devastation of Hurricane Katrina inadvertently kicked off a thriving scene focused on keeping community alive in New Orleans, a deep review of Christian ska group Five Iron Frenzy, who broke a Kickstarter record in the ’10s while making progressive activists out of their fan base, a close inspection of a hipster rocksteady scene in Brooklyn that grew so popular it nearly kicked off a nationwide revival, and more secret ska past revelations with none other than Fall Out Boy lead singer Patrick Stump—who has a story that, up until recently, was carefully guarded. Plus, the book re-explores several bands featured in the first edition, revealing new layers and more details about all the bands fans love, like Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Operation Ivy, the Slackers, Hepcat, Mephiskapheles, and Reel Big Fish. With 30,000 additional words, this is the complete ska package. Aaron Carnes is a music journalist based out of Sacramento, California. His work has appeared in Playboy, Salon, Bandcamp Daily, Sierra Club, Noisey, and Sun Magazine. He’s also the host of the In Defense of Ska podcast because he can’t stop talking about ska.
