An Evening with Rob Sheffield | Books-A-Million
Nov 13, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Sheffield
Join us for a special event with bestselling author and Rolling Stone columnist, Rob Sheffield! His latest book, Heartbreak Is the National Anthem, dives deep into the magic, heartbreak, and artistry of Taylor Swift’s music. Trust us when we say this is the event for any die-hard Taylor fan who loves to dissect lyrics, talk album eras, and celebrate every iconic moment. Rob's deep love and knowledge of Taylor's music make him the perfect guide for an exciting discussion you won't want to miss! The first 250 guests to purchase tickets will have the option to attend an exclusive author talk and interactive Q&A with Rob, followed by a meet & greet. Remaining tickets will be for the meet & greet line only. Tickets will include a signed copy of Heartbreak is the National Anthem. Whether you’ve been a Swiftie since the debut album or are loving every minute of the Eras Tour, this event is perfect for anyone who has ever sung along to a Taylor anthem. We can't wait to see you there! An intimate look at the life and music of modern pop's most legendary figure, Taylor Swift, from leading music journalist Rob Sheffield. A cultural phenomenon. A worldwide obsession. An agent of emotional chaos. There's no parallel to Taylor Swift in history: a teenage girl who turns into the world's favorite pop star, songwriter, storyteller, guitar hero, live performer, changing how music is made and heard. An all-time great on the level of The Beatles, Prince, or David Bowie. Heartbreak Is the National Anthem: How Taylor Swift Reinvented Pop Music is the first book that goes deep on the musical and cultural impact of Taylor Swift. Nobody can tell the story like Rob Sheffield, the bestselling and award-winning author of Dreaming the Beatles, On Bowie, and Love Is a Mix Tape. The legendary Rolling Stone journalist is the writer who has chronicled Taylor for every step of her long career, from her early days to the Eras Tour. Sheffield gets right to the heart of Swift and her music, her lyrics, her fan connection, her raw power. At once one of the most beloved music figures of the past two decades and one of the most criticized, Taylor Swift is known as much for her life beyond her music as she is for her hits--the most public of stars, yet also the weirdest and most mysterious. In the tradition of Sheffield's Dreaming the Beatles, Heartbreak Is the National Anthem will inform and delight a legion of fans who hang on every word from Taylor and every word Rob writes on her. Rob Sheffield is a columnist for Rolling Stone, where he has been writing about music, TV, and pop culture since 1997. He is the author of the national bestsellers Love Is a Mix Tape: Love and Loss, One Song at a Time; Talking to Girls About Duran Duran: One Young Man's Quest for True Love and a Cooler Haircut; Turn Around Bright Eyes: The Rituals of Love & Karaoke: On Bowie; and Dreaming the Beatles: The Love Story of One Band and the Whole World. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Bobby Baker: Drawing on a (Grand)mother’s Experience | Millennium Gallery
Nov 28, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Sheffield
Originally intended as a one-off performance work to make sense of the first eight years of motherhood, Bobby Baker’s Drawing on a Mother’s Experience (1988) gained widespread critical acclaim and went on to be shown multiple times over the next 12 years. Having learned caution as a mother and the ability to think ahead, the performance sites Baker as a meticulously prepared action painter, who has substituted oil paint and canvas for a double bed sheet and various foodstuffs. Poking fun at her male predecessors (artists such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and others) Baker’s revelatory commentary interrogates domesticity, motherhood and the role of the artist, using each ingredient to represent a specific event or episode in her recent personal history. In 2015, the artist revisited the work and devised an updated version: Drawing on a (Grand) Mother’s Experience (DOGME). This was first performed at WOW – Women of the World Festival at the Southbank Centre in 2015, following an invitation to re-stage Drawing on a Mother’s Experience. By then, a grandmother and as dedicated a feminist as ever, Baker chose to instead bring her original performance up to date. DOGME explores the experience of early motherhood from the more reflective vantage point of age and experience while considering the ongoing challenge of combining motherhood and parental responsibilities with the drive to retain autonomy. For this event, in conjunction with the Acts of Creation exhibition, a film version of DOGME will be screened, followed by a talk by the artist. Image Credit: Bobby Baker, Drawing on a (Grand) Mother's Experience, performed at Women of the World Festival, Southbank Centre, 2015. Photo: Belinda Lawley “Bobby Baker has rightly received plaudits around the world throughout her career for her originality, artistic courage and integrity. Like other great artists/authors she has constantly and candidly looped her own life experience into challenging and audacious performance pieces that entertain and liberate conversation around taboo subjects.”
Jude Kelly CBE, CEO and Founder of WOW – Women of the World Foundation, and former Artistic Director, Southbank Centre. Sharing the View: Philosophy in the Gallery | Graves Gallery
Nov 29, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Sheffield
Join with others to enquire into the ideas that emerge when we look at art together. This will be an informal and in-depth discussion, drawing on the Graves Gallery permanent collection as a stimulus for philosophical enquiry. Everyone can philosophise – come ready to find more questions than you do answers! We will use the Philosophy for Communities (P4C) method, a structured but flexible process for a group to find and discuss a big question. P4C gets you thinking creatively, critically, collaboratively and with care; thinking and talking together to delve into ideas more deeply. All welcome, no experience required. “I love, love, love the respectful conversations and the insights, and challenges that arise.” Previous participant (Sheffield Year of Reading) Facilitator Rosie Carnall has years of experience in P4C and loves getting people to think, talk, and listen together. She convenes the Sheffield Philosophy in Pubs group. Image credit: Andy Brown
