Registration is required in advance. About To Stand with Palestine. . .In recent years, attitudes in the United States toward the Palestinian cause have shifted dramatically. Although Palestinians have long been demonized in U.S. media and politics, their struggle portrayed as illegitimate, emergent progressive voices increasingly challenge the status quo on Israel and Palestine and express solidarity with Palestinian resistance. What accounts for this change and its evolution? This book provides a new lens on activism around Palestinian issues, demonstrating how the global Palestinian diaspora has driven transnational political movements. Karam Dana explores the ways that exile has shaped Palestinian identity and allowed for new forms of global activism. He examines the social, political, economic, and technological forces that have created space for Palestinian voices to be heard by wider audiences worldwide. Drawing on interviews with scholars and advocates—including members of the Palestinian diaspora and Jewish American activists—as well as public opinion data and media analysis, Dana traces how global Palestinian communities have influenced American views. He addresses the backlash against pro-Palestinian advocacy but argues that solidarity with Palestinians—both in the United States and globally—will continue to strengthen. Timely and insightful, To Stand with Palestine offers an inside look at how Palestinians have shared their story with the world and why sympathy for their plight is growing, with significant implications for the global political landscape. Karam Danais a Palestinian American Professor of Middle Eastern Politics and the Alyson McGregor Distinguished Professor at the University of Washington Bothell. He is also the Founding Director of The American Muslim Research Institute. He specializes in Palestinian identity, transnationalism, and public opinion research. Dr. Dana is a recognized academic, author, and speaker, committed to advancing study of Arab, Muslim, and BIPOC communities in the U.S. through scholarship and community engagement. He received 2018 UW Distinguished Teaching Award, the 2023 UW Bothell Distinguished Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activities Award. In 2024, the Arab American Community of the Pacific Northwest presented him with the Outstanding Service and Leadership Award. Reşat Kasaba is Professor at the Henry M. After not securing an NHL contract with the Seattle Rainiers, Jaylen decides to bid the city farewell with a final night of fun, blowing off steam with an anonymous one night stand. But when a last-minute roster spot opens up on the Rainiers, he connects his luck to the girl he spent the night with. Superstitious Jaylen is desperate to keep her around—his career depends on it. Aspiring tattoo artist Lucy Ross isn’t so sure about the proposition to remain Jaylen’s lucky charm—she’s been called a lot of things in her life, but good luck has never been one of them. But stuck in a career slump, Lucy has everything to gain. Hoping for an apprenticeship hasn’t offered much stability, and Jaylen is willing to pay any price to get Lucy to agree…so maybe sending him a routine text message before each game won’t be too hard. What starts as an agreement to trade favors—a good luck text in exchange for tattooing practice for Lucy’s portfolio—quickly turns into sizzling chemistry that’s too delicious to deny. But Lucy’s been in too many situationships to even think about getting attached again, and Jaylen is clearly only with Lucy as long as it’s helping his gameplay… Neither of them expecting getting lucky could be so complicated. ABOUT LEXI LAFLEUR BROWNLexi LaFleur Brown comes from a long line of hockey fans, so it was no surprise when she decided to hit the ice herself. Having grown up in the crease, she has seen it all. From the bottom of a dog pile after a big win, to the long quiet bus ride home after a loss and is better having faced both. Hockey laid the foundation for Lexi’s can-do determination, which transferred nicely to her passion for education. She has an MS in Public Relations and a PhD in Education. When Lexi’s not writing hockey romance, she’s chronically online. With a large social media following, she advocates for more inclusivity in hockey, cracks jokes, and shares a glimpse into her own post-meet cute hockey life. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! Having trouble registering? See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. About Girl Anonymous. . .Romeo and Juliet meets Sandra Brown with a dash of “The Godfather” in this romantic thriller about a woman who has been trying to escape the deadly feud her mother ignited years ago with devastating consequences—and with one explosion, she’s drawn right back in. Maarja Doe owns a moving company that’s been hired to move Mrs. Bouchard’s precious paintings and objects to her new home in Montana. The Bouchards are the undisputed leaders of an Old World/New World crime syndicate that is slowly transitioning into legitimate business, but those old values of revenge and retribution are alive and well. Maarja knows that for a fact because twenty three years ago, her mother ignited an explosion that killed herself and Mrs. Bouchard’s husband and it’s haunted Maarja ever since. For she was there that day too… Mrs. Bouchard doesn’t seem to recognize her, but her son, Dante, watches Maarja closely and has a million questions . Questions that seem benign but she knows he doesn’t miss anything. He was there that day too and she remembers him—his arrogance, his curiosity, his judgment. And just as they’re all about to part, the move completed, Maarja is standing with Mrs. Bouchard when she hears a crash…and then the roar of an explosion. Mrs. Bouchard saved her life all of those years ago and Maarja is determined to return the favor and get her out of the burning building. But when Mrs. Bouchard dies in Dante’s arms, Maarja loses control. She hoped she could escape the past, that the overwhelming fear she lived with on a daily basis would eventually subside. But it all comes roaring back—the desperate sound of her mother’s voice, the feel of the flames on her face, the panic that every moment could be her last. Dante Bouchard was there that day too. And this second explosion binds them even closer together than the first one did. They’ve both known unfathomable loss and grief and they both know that the people responsible for this second blast aren’t finished yet. Maarja and Dante are still alive and they won’t rest until that’s no longer the case. New York Times bestselling author Christina Doddwrites “brilliantly etched characters, polished writing, and unexpected flashes of sharp humor that are pure Dodd” (ALA Booklist,) and much to her mother’s delight, Dodd was once a clue in the Los Angeles Times crossword puzzle. He'll be introducing new readers to the re-publication of The Zelmenyaners: A Family Saga, written by Moyshe Kulbak and translated from Yiddish by Hillel Halkin. The Zelmenyaners describes the travails of a Jewish family in Minsk that is torn asunder by the new Soviet reality. Four generations are depicted in riveting and often uproarious detail as they face the profound changes brought on by the demands of the Soviet regime and its collectivist, radical secularism. Registration is required in advance. About The Zelmenyaners. . .This is the first complete English-language translation of a classic of Yiddish literature, one of the great comic novels of the twentieth century. The resultant intergenerational showdowns– including disputes over the introduction of electricity, radio, and electric trolley– are rendered with humor, pathos, and a finely controlled satiric pen. Moyshe Kulbak, a contemporary of the Soviet Jewish writer Isaac Babel, picks up where Sholem Aleichem left off a generation before, exploring in this book the transformation of Jewish life. Sasha Senderovich is associate professor of Slavic, Jewish, and international studies at the University of Washington, Seattle. He is the author of How the Soviet Jew Was Made (Harvard University Press, 2022). He has also published on Soviet-born American writers like Gary Shteyngart, Anya Ulinich, Irina Reyn, and David Bezmozgis. Together with Harriet Murav, he is the translator of the Yiddish writer David Bergelson’s Judgment: A Novel (Northwestern University Press, 2017) and, from Yiddish and Russian, of In the Shadow of the Holocaust: Short Fiction by Jewish Writers from the Soviet Union (this project has received a 2023-2025 grant for Scholarly Editions and Translations from the National Endowment for the Humanities; the book is expected from Stanford University Press in 2026). He has also published essays on literary, cultural, and political topics in the Los Angeles Review of Books, the New York Times, Jewish Currents, the New Republic, and elsewhere. Moyshe Kulbak (1896-1937) was a leading Yiddish modernist poet, novelist, and dramatist. He is the author of Childe Harold of Dysna and The Messiah of the House of Ephraim, among other works. He was arrested and executed in 1937, during the wave of Stalinist repression that hit dozens of Yiddish and other writers and cultural activists throughout Soviet Belarus. If she misses her next deadline it’s The End. Desperate for inspiration, Hazel impulse-buys a historic home online and flees Manhattan to tiny Story Lake, PA. Upon her dramatic arrival—involving an incident with a bald eagle—she discovers the charm of her new home may have been slightly exaggerated. The house is a wreck and the town is struggling after their biggest employer shut down. Also, since her raccoon-infested home came with a seat on the town council our introverted heroine is stuck with a front row seat to all the small-town shenanigans. But Hazel isn’t worried. Not since all six-feet-three inches of grouchy contractor Campbell Bishop slapped a bandage on her forehead and unintentionally inspired the heck out of her. There’s only one thing to do: Hire Cam and his equally gorgeous brothers to renovate her new spider museum…er…house. Okay two things. A fake date for “research purposes” will really put her work-in-progress on track. Before Hazel knows it, she’s writing a romance novel and living one. At least until the drywall dust settles, the town she’s falling in love with faces bankruptcy, and growly Cam remembers why he can’t live happily ever after. Lucy Score is a #1 New York Times and a USA Today bestselling author. She grew up in a literary family who insisted that the dinner table was for reading and earned a degree in journalism. She writes full-time from the Pennsylvania home she and Mr. Lucy share with their obnoxious cat, Cleo. When not spending hours crafting heartbreaker heroes and kick-ass heroines, Lucy can be found on the couch, in the kitchen, or at the gym. She hopes to someday write from a sailboat, oceanfront condo, or tropical island with reliable Wi-Fi. #1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn loves to dispel the myth that smart women don’t read (or write) romance, and if you watch reruns of the game show The Weakest Link you might just catch her winning the $79,000 jackpot. She displayed a decided lack of knowledge about baseball, country music, and plush toys, but she is proud to say that she aced all things British and literary, answered all of her history and geography questions correctly, and knew that there was a Da Vinci long before there was a code. On December 25, 2020, Netflix premiered Bridgerton, based on her popular series of novels about the Bridgerton family. Quinn is the author of almost 40 books — all romance, mostly novels (some novellas, a graphic novel, and a few that defy easy labelling; please peruse her bookshelf). When not writing, she spends much of her time advocating for causes she strongly believes in. A graduate of Harvard & Radcliffe Colleges, she lives in the Pacific Northwest with her family. About Contested City. . .Contested City offers a history of state-society relations in Baghdad, exploring how city residents managed through periods of economic growth, sanctions, and war, from the oil boom of the 1950s through the withdrawal of US troops in 2011. Interactions between citizens and their rulers shaped the social fabric and political realities of the city. Notably, low-ranking Ba'th party officials functioned as crucial intermediaries, deciding how regime policies would be applied. Charting the social, economic, and political transformations of Iraq's capital city, Alissa Walter examines how national policies translated into action at the local, everyday level. With this book, Walter reveals how authoritarian governance worked in practice. She follows shifts in mid-century housing and urban development, the impact of the Iran–Iraq and Gulf Wars on city life, and the manipulation of food rations and growth of black markets. Reading citizen petitions to the government, Walter illuminates citizens' self-advocacy and the important role of low-ranking party officials and state bureaucrats embedded within neighborhoods. The US occupation and ensuing sectarian fighting upended Baghdad's neighborhoods through violent displacement and the collapse of basic state services. This power vacuum paved the way for new power brokers, including militias and neighborhood councils, to compete for influence on the local level. Alissa Walter is an Associate Professor of History at Seattle Pacific University. She earned her MA in Arab Studies and her PhD in Middle Eastern History from Georgetown University in Washington, DC. She traveled frequently to Iraq for her research, and has spent significant time in Egypt, Jordan, and Morocco. Walter regularly volunteers as an expert witness for Iraqi asylum seekers in Washington. Walter has deep roots in the Pacific Northwest: her husband was born and raised in the area, and they are now raising their two kids to experience all the natural beauty that the Northwest offers. From the streets, to the ballot box, to elected office, no other demographic group stands up more consistently and unequivocally for human rights, democracy, and the planet. Remarkably, they’ve accomplished this despite conditions—in their fields and organizations—that make leadership uniquely treacherous for them. For women of color leaders, the game is rigged. How much more could humanity be winning if we unrigged it? Unrig the Game equips us to support effective women of color leaders so we can all win. A former community and union organizer who started one of the largest foundations to resource women of color-led organizing, Vanessa Priya Daniel draws on candid interviews with forty-five prominent women of color movement leaders, along with her own experience at the helm of an organization, to offer an on-the-ground perspective of the obstacles leaders face, how they navigate them, and how allies can show up. Daniel highlights the unique strengths and “superpowers” these leaders bring to the fight for social change, while debunking the myth that identity alone makes a transformative leader. For women of color leaders, this book is a balm, a sister circle, and a master class. For everyone, it is an essential tool to realize the world we all deserve. Vanessa Priya Danielhas worked in social justice movements for twenty-five years as a labor and community organizer and funder. She founded and served for seventeen years as executive director of Groundswell Fund, a leading funder of women of color-led grassroots and electoral organizing. She is a recipient of the Smith College Medal, was featured by The Chronicle of Philanthropy as one of fifteen “Influencers” who are changing the non-profit world, and by Inside Philanthropy as one of the “Top 100 Most Powerful Players in Philanthropy.” Daniel has written for The New York Times and other publications. Naomi Ishisaka is the Assistant Managing Editor for Diversity and Inclusion and the Social Justice Columnist for The Seattle Times. About Murder by Memory. . .A mind is a terrible thing to erase... Welcome to the HMS Fairweather, Her Majesty's most luxurious interstellar passenger liner! Room and board are included, new bodies are graciously provided upon request, and should you desire a rest between lifetimes, your mind shall be most carefully preserved in glass in the Library, shielded from every danger. Near the topmost deck of an interstellar generation ship, Dorothy Gentleman wakes up in a body that isn’t hers—just as someone else is found murdered. As one of the ship’s detectives, Dorothy usually delights in unraveling the schemes on board the Fairweather, but when she finds that someone is not only killing bodies but purposefully deleting minds from the Library, she realizes something even more sinister is afoot. Dorothy suspects her misfortune is partly the fault of her feckless nephew Ruthie who, despite his brilliance as a programmer, leaves chaos in his cheerful wake. Or perhaps the sultry yarn store proprietor—and ex-girlfriend of the body Dorothy is currently inhabiting—knows more than she’s letting on. Whatever it is, Dorothy intends to solve this case. Because someone has done the impossible and found a way to make murder on the Fairweather a very permanent state indeed. A mastermind may be at work—and if so, they’ve had three hundred years to perfect their schemes... Told through Dorothy’s delightfully shrewd POV, this novella is an ode to the cozy mystery taken to the stars with a fresh new sci-fi take. Perfect for fans of the plot-twisty narratives of Dorothy Sayers and Ann Leckie, this well-paced story will leave readers captivated and hungry for the series’s next installment. Olivia Waite writes queer science fiction, fantasy, historical romance, and essays. She is the romance fiction columnist for the New York Times Book Review.
