While pop-up 1.0 focused on different forms of exchange and pop-up 2.0 explored possibilities for a new value web, you can now step into the New Store pop-up 3.0 in the foyer of the Nieuwe Instituut. Browse the shelves for a wide range of products for the holiday season as well as all year round. Every product is the result of partnerships with local producers. New Store’s ultimate goal is to be fully and thoroughly regenerative. Although we’re not there yet, these New Store pop-ups act as a testing ground that bring designers’ ideas and proposals into the real world. Together with external partners, the third pop-up delves into what it means to design, practice and purchase in a fully regenerative way. New Store pop-up 3.0 features Seawood by Blueblocks, Reef by Urban Reef, Eggshell Ceramic by Atelier LVDW, Loop Earthrise by Loop Biotech, Woolfiller by Heleen Klopper, Oyster Heaven, Duckweed Tile by Flip the City, and Rammed Earth Stool by Studio Acte. This new pop-up remains at the Nieuwe Instituut for at least a year, after which it will gradually develop into a more permanent store. Elke dag komen we onbekenden tegen: mensen die we niet kennen, maar over wie we vaak al een beeld hebben gevormd. In deze workshop creëren we een poëtische ode aan een onbekende. Eerst verdiepen we ons in het onbekende: waarom spreken we sommige mensen aan en anderen niet? Hoe kijk je met een open blik naar het onbekende? En hoe schrijf je over iemand anders? Daarna gaan we aan de slag: deelnemers kunnen ervoor kiezen de markt op te gaan of binnen de workshop-groep een onbekende te vinden om een liefdevolle, poëtische ode voor te schrijven. The program for the Rotterdam Student Orchestra's winter concert focuses on three female composers. Florence Price: The Oak Clara Schumann: Piano Concerto in A minor Amy Beach: Gaelic Symphony Soloist (piano): Yukiko Hasegawa Conductor: Coen Huisman Yukiko Hasegawa Yukiko Hasegawa (Hamamatsu, Japan) is known for her refined and sensitive musicianship with a deep understanding of the many different styles in her repertoire. Born in Japan, she now resides in The Netherlands. Both active as a pianist and fortepianist, she performs as a soloist and in chamber music collaborations for many different music festivals and concert venues. Internationally she has performed in Germany, Poland and Japan. She made her orchestral debut in 2004 in Hamamatsu, Japan with the Krakow Philharmonic Orchestra, playing Beethoven’s 5th Piano Concerto. With pianist Tobias Borsboom she forms a piano duo, that regularly performs in Japan. In 2019 they were the winners of the ‘Shizuoka no Meishu-tachi’ auditions. Florence Price The program opens with a tone poem by the American composer and pianist Florence Price (1887–1953). Price, born Florence Smith, was a key figure in the Chicago Black Renaissance, a cultural movement of African American artists in Chicago that built on the earlier Harlem Renaissance. Despite facing significant obstacles due to her gender and race, and nearly being forgotten after her death, Price left behind a substantial body of work. Her orchestral compositions, such as The Oak (1943), reflect the musically conservative Romantic nationalist style of the time. However, her cultural heritage and the ideals of the Harlem Renaissance infuse her music, with colorful harmonies and exotic modulations evoking the serene atmosphere of natural landscapes. Clara Schumann More than half a century earlier, another pianist and composer, Clara Schumann (1819–1896), was at the forefront of the Romantic movement in music. Born Clara Wieck, she was a child prodigy and a renowned piano virtuoso. While her career primarily focused on performing and teaching, she also composed music, following in the footsteps of other great pianist-composers of her era. She wrote her only completed concerto, the Piano Concerto in A Minor (1835), at the age of 15. This dramatic and innovative work showcases her virtuosity and original musical ideas, characterized by light textures and lyrical melodies. Notably, the romantic second movement stands out for its unique accompaniment by a solo cello. Amy Beach Amy Beach (1867–1944), born Amy Cheney, was an American child prodigy and pianist who became a prominent composer of art songs and symphonic music. She was the only woman among the so-called Boston Six of the Second New England School, a group of American composers known for their high aesthetic ideals and deep respect for European musical traditions. One of Beach's most celebrated works is the Gaelic Symphony (1896). In this large-scale, four-movement composition, Beach drew heavily on the late Romantic tradition. As she often did in her instrumental works, she incorporated themes from her earlier songs into the symphony, skillfully blending them with folkloristic elements that reflect her Anglo-American heritage. Vereniging Rotterdams Jeugd Symfonie Orkest The Rotterdam Student Orchestra (RSO) is part of the Vereniging Rotterdams Jeugd Symfonie Orkest (Rotterdam Youth Symphony Orchestra Association).
