What is a Chinese painting? Is it the pigments used? Is it a silk or paper supporting it? Is it the artist who makes it? Do plants, animals, landscapes, figures, and events it depicts define a Chinese painting? What have been the changes and continuity in Chinese artists’ goals and intentions throughout the centuries? Above all, to what extent do Chinese artists consider painting a vehicle for self-expression? In this talk Hongxing will approach those questions based on his research for and experience of the much acclaimed “Masterpieces of Chinese Painting 700-1900” he curated at the V&A Museum in 2013-14. The talk will also address the challenges and hopes for collecting and displaying Chinese paintings for public and private collections in the U.K. The event will be moderated by Dr Zhaokun Xin, Lecturer in Chinese Cultural Studies at the University of Manchester. ABOUT THE SPEAKERHongxing Zhang is a painting specialist and the Senior Curator of East Asia in the Asia Department at the V&A Museum since 2004.
