Hudson River School: THE REDUX | The Little Red Lighthouse

Jun 22, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
Arts
Fine Art
Meet us at the spot made famous by the children's classic, The Little Red Lighthouse under the Great Gray Bridge . We will get to go inside and receive a private park ranger tour. Hudson River School artists Thomas Cole and Asher Durand created dramatic, captivating depictions of the river and the Palisades. Even then, their work responded to the need to preserve the American landscape. Today, along Upper Manhattan's Hudson Path and the Metro-North Hudson line train track, the countryside and the results of the Industrial Age ebb and flow together. Shift timelines and experience the life of the Lenape along the river and the biodiversity of then and now. Explore the nature that coexists with the cityscape, discovering beauty in the juxtaposition. Following the tour, enjoy a buffet brunch with new friends in a historic Harlem apartment with sweeping river views. Then, spend an afternoon watercolor painting inspired by our Hudson River scenes. Who are you really?” Nick Radcliffe is a man of substance and good taste. He has a smile that could melt the coldest heart and a knack for putting others at ease. He’s just what Nina Swann needed in her life after her husband’s unexpected death. But to Nina’s adult daughter, Ash, Nick seems too slick, too polished, too good to be true. Without telling her mother, Ash begins digging into Nick’s past. What she finds is more than unsettling... “Because there are things that don’t make sense, and I’ve been so patient, so very patient...” Martha is a florist living in a neighboring town with her infant daughter and her devoted husband Alistair. But lately, Alistair has been traveling more and more frequently for work, disappearing for days at a time. When Martha questions him about his frequent absences, he always has a legitimate explanation, but Martha can’t share the feeling that something isn't right. “You know that’s mad, don’t you? I’m your husband. We know everything there is to know about each other.” Nina, Martha, and Ash are on a collision course with a shocking truth that is far darker than anyone could have imagined. And all three are about to wish they had heeded the same warning: Don’t let him in. But the past won’t stay buried forever. For further information on accessibility in this space, or to make a request, please contact events@strandbooks.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- A witty page-turner from the bestselling author of Excavations, Salty takes us to a tropical paradise with a hurricane on the way, where two estranged sisters uncover their rich employers’ reckless development—could these yacht owners have something to do with the dead body found in the marina? Denise has been a yacht captain for half her life. She lives for storms on the Caribbean Sea and stingrays, has amazing pocket knife skills, and wouldn’t be caught dead socializing on the boat. She uses those knives to cut her own hair, and it shows. Her sister Helen is ten years younger and always wears accessories that prompt people to ask about her travels. The two haven’t seen each other in years. Helen’s made a career out of putting the hospitable in hospitality and was just fired yet again for hooking up with a guest. With every HR bridge burned, she joins Denise’s crew working the boats. The clashing sisters are immediately thrown into the deep—their first charter is the Falcon family, shady real estate developers who mowed down Helen and Denise’s childhood home to build condos along the beautiful peninsula here. The Falcons treat everyone like pawns—from their future daughter-in-law, gullible Poppy, who has no idea what she’s marrying into, to the uptight yacht concierge, Geoff, who’s looking for love in very wrong places. When the Falcon condo building collapses—and a dead body turns up beside it—Helen and Denise comb through the boat, marina, and beyond to uncover just how low the Falcons will sink in order to stay afloat—before the big storm wipes out the evidence. Photo credit: Mary Kate McKenna Kate Myers is the author of the national bestseller Excavations . Her writing has appeared in Elle, BuzzFeed, and Self magazines. She studied archaeology at the University of Pennsylvania and has lived in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC, where she's worked for CBS in television development and for CollegeHumor. Stewart and Ellen Gabler, earned a Loeb Award for their article “‘If Bobbie Talks, I'm Finished’: How Les Moonves Tried to Silence an Accuser.” The story exposed how Mr. Moonves’s attempts to bury a sexual assault allegation led to his ouster as the chief executive of CBS . The article formed the basis for "Unscripted." Ms. Abrams was also part of a group of reporters who covered a crisis at General Motors involving fatal ignition switches and the federal government’s inattention to vehicle defects, which resulted in stricter government oversight of the American auto industry and earned The Times the 2014 Scripps Howard award for public service reporting. The Importance of Being Earnest, a Trivial Comedy for Serious People by Oscar Wilde, is the last of his four drawing-room plays, following Lady Windermere's Fan (1892), A Woman of No Importance (1893) and An Ideal Husband (1895). First performed on 14 February 1895 at the St James's Theatre in London, it is a farcical comedy depicting the tangled affairs of two young men about town who lead double lives to evade unwanted social obligations, both assuming the name Ernest while wooing the two young women of their affections. The play, celebrated for its wit and repartee, parodies contemporary dramatic norms, gently satirises late Victorian manners, and introduces – in addition to the two pairs of young lovers – the formidable Lady Bracknell, the fussy governess Miss Prism and the benign and scholarly Canon Chasuble. Typographics Conference (in-person) ticket holders can have a 10% discount on this workshop. Write to type@cooper.edu for the promo-code to take advantage of this offer before you pay. Learn drawing techniques and understand letter structure from a graffiti writing context to enhance your type and lettering work. This workshop focuses on graffiti pieces and the rich subculture of graffiti writers—a tradition of letterforms that originated on New York City subways in the 1970s. Through drawing exercises, history lessons, and demonstrations, participants will learn how to adapt ideas from the graffiti world while respecting the artform and its practitioners. You'll work on a series of drawings, developing one idea into a lettering piece, drawn alphabet, or foundation for a new display typeface. Kel will help you see the graffiti around you in new ways and leave the workshop with fresh ideas and a deeper appreciation for graffiti work. No prior experience with graffiti writing is necessary—just a type or lettering practice and curiosity for other forms of letter making. No computers are required for this workshop.
