Well technically the expenses were paid—last year, when she was supposed to go to Hawaii for her honeymoon with her then-fiancé Jamie. But the wedding didn’t go as planned (or at all), and now she’s decided to use those hotel vouchers alone, before they expire. Sybil’s expecting mai tais, med spas and me-time, so she nearly plunges backwards into the infinity pool when she sees that Jamie has had the same idea! His family business is thinking of buying the resort, so he’s here with a gorgeous, tangerine bikini-clad “colleague” to give the property a once-over. Desperate to save face in front of the ex who broke her heart at the altar, Sybil accidentally-on-purpose blurts out that she’s here with her boyfriend. But what starts as a harmless lie to spare her dignity soon spirals into an ex-fiancé fiasco when Sebastian—the second of Sybil’s three failed engagements—pops by fresh off a photography gig. Seb’s always up for a good time, and happy to play along …sparking unexpected jealousy in Jamie. From snorkeling snafus to stunning vistas to staff parties at the beach, Sybil does her best to juggle two ex-fiancés, but it’s becoming clear that her past of broken promises must be reckoned with once and for all—including that first fiancé, Liam, the one she never talks about… Is the notorious free-spirit, life-of-the-party, runaway bride Sybil Rain ready to heal from her three past engagements and make room in her heart for a fourth and final chance at love? People got to know each other better and made more connections during the trivia than they did during the actual speed dating rounds! The trivia questions sparked so much conversation that we thought, "Wow, we should make an entire event like this!". And that is how our Singles Trivia Night was started! THESE EVENTS WILL LIKELY SELL OUT BY EVENT TIME AND WE HAVE LIMITED SPOTS AVAILABLE AT EACH EVENT SO GRAB YOUR TICKET ASAP! Information Source: Fun Events | eventbrite

In 1963, Edward T. Hall coined the term 'proxemics' to discuss the use of personal space and how this impacts our communication and behavior. In a shrinking world, where personal data is sold cheap - and need not even be accurate - TowardsXR and the Cybernetics Library will take a fresh look at his classic work, 'The Hidden Dimension', and discuss what personal space means in a world of social media glut. Joining us will be recent Princeton graduate Jack Deschenes, whose undergraduate thesis dove into the examination of equilibria and player behavior in a high-variance card game called 'Three Toed Pete', a high-stakes game with simple rules that lead to complex and difficult decisions of increasing magnitude of importance. You don't need to be a math geek (or game geek, or tech geek) to get something out of our discussion. Just bring yourself and a sense of how things are feeling these days when it seems more personal bubbles are being solidified - and burst.Doors open 7 PM. Information Source: TowardXR | eventbrite

Captioning Case Study: Shana Moulton and Emily Watlington | 264 Canal St #3w

EAI is thrilled to invite artist Shana Moulton and critic and senior editor of Art in America, Emily Watlington, for a conversation on audiovisual access in EAI’s collection. Using Moulton’s video The Galactic Pot Healer (2010) as a case study, the two will reflect on their experiences adapting this work to evolving standards of accessibility. Moulton and Watlington will engage in dialogue on their collaborative process, demonstrating how artists and institutions can collaborate to preserve moving image art by creating new pathways for meaningful audience engagement. This evening expands EAI’s ongoing programmatic focus on accessibility in moving image art, which publicly highlights the organization’s efforts to make its collection more accessible through captioning and audio description. EAI hopes to frame audiovisual accessibility as a generative and necessary component of stewarding artworks across time. This program builds from previous events and initiatives centering accessibility in EAI’s collection, including Radical Accessibility: Making Media Art Collections Truly Accessible and (Mis)Reading the Image: Selections by Darrin Martin. Watlington’s essay, The Radical Accessibility of Video Art (For Hearing People) (2020) was an important catalyst for EAI, which was founded on the principle of access. EAI has since strived to expand our application of this word to engage disabled audiences and shed light on the institutional, governmental, social, and financial barriers to making video art truly accessible. If you have any accessibility needs or questions about our access plans for this event, please contact cstrange@eai.org. We can accommodate requests for ASL interpretation up to two weeks prior to June 24. Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI)’s venue is located at 264 Canal Street, 3W, near several Canal Street subway stations. Our floor is accessible by elevator (63 × 60 car, 31 door) and stairway. Due to the age and other characteristics of the building, our bathrooms are not ADA-accessible, though several such bathrooms are located nearby. If you have questions about access, please contact cstrange@eai.org in advance of the event. Information Source: Electronic Arts Intermix | eventbrite

Event guidelines are subject to change. _______________________________________________________________________________________ ABOUT IT RHYMES WITH TAKEI : George Takei has shown the world many faces: actor, author, outspoken activist, helmsman of the starship Enterprise, living witness to the internment of Japanese Americans, and king of social media. But until October 27, 2005, there was always one piece missing—one face he did not show the world. There was one very intimate fact about George that he never shared…and it rhymes with Takei. Now, for the first time ever, George shares the full story of his life in the closet, his decision to come out as gay at the age of 68, and the way that moment transformed everything. Following the phenomenal success of his first graphic memoir, They Called Us Enemy , George Takei reunites with the team of Harmony Becker, Steven Scott, and Justin Eisinger for a jaw-dropping new testament. From his earliest childhood crushes and youthful experiments in the rigidly conformist 1950s, to global fame asv an actor and the terrible fear of exposure, to the watershed moment of speaking his truth and becoming one of the most high-profile gay men on the planet, It Rhymes with Takei offers a sweeping portrait of one iconic American navigating the tides of LGBTQ+ history. Combining historical context with intimate subjectivity, It Rhymes with Takei shows how the personal and the political have always been intertwined. Its richly emotional words and images depict the terror of entrapment even in gay community spaces, the anguish of speaking up for so many issues while remaining silent on his most personal issue, the grief of losing friends to AIDS, the joy of finding true love with Brad Altman, and the determination to declare that love openly—and legally—before the whole world. Looking back on his astonishing life on both sides of the closet door, George Takei presents a charismatic and candid account of how far America has come…and how precious that progress is. ABOUT George Takei : George Takei is a civil rights activist, social media superstar, Grammy-nominated recording artist, New York Times bestselling author, and pioneering actor whose career has spanned six decades. He has appeared in more than 40 feature films and hundreds of television roles, most famously as Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek , and he has used his success as a platform to fight for social justice, LGBTQ+ rights, and marriage equality. His advocacy is personal: during World War II, Takei spent his childhood unjustly imprisoned in United States incarceration camps along with 125,000 other Japanese Americans. Takei is the author of five books, including his autobiography, To the Stars . His Eisner Award winning and New York Times bestselling graphic memoir They Called Us Enemy was released in July 2019. His picture book for children, My Lost Freedom: A Japanese American World War II Story , also became a New York Times bestseller upon its release in April 2024. The first woman to represent the state of Illinois. The first Black woman to serve as a US ambassador to New Zealand. These are just a few of the “firsts” that Ambassador Carol Moseley Braun can lay claim to since entering politics in the 1970s. Since then, the self-professed “Black girl from the south side of Chicago” has been shattering ceilings and making history. Yet her journey to Congress and to international renown was not an easy one, rife with obstacles, controversies, and lessons learned. In Trailblazer , Moseley Braun shares the full story of her extraordinary life in a fascinating narrative filled with poignant, powerful, and sometimes funny stories. Born into a family with a history of civil rights activism and military service dating back to the Civil War, Moseley Braun talks about her childhood in racially segregated Chicago to the present, including marching with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., running for president as the lone woman in a field of men, and fostering surprising friendships throughout her storied career, from Joe Biden to Hillary Clinton. Trailblazer is a story of perseverance, a moving narrative from a once-in-a-generation icon, steeped in the civic and civil rights history of our nation. Carol Moseley Braun offers readers a measure of hope and an optimistic letter to future generations on the work we have done and have yet to do to ensure that our country lives up to the promise of liberty and justice for all. 3D Typography in Blender with Rob Stenson | The Cooper Union, 41 Cooper Square

Jun 25, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED

Arts
Design
This is a 2-day in-person workshop meeting Wednesday, June 25 & Thursday, June 26 from 10 am to 5 pm. Typographics Conference (in-person) ticket holders can have a 10% discount on this workshop. Write to type@cooper.edu for the promo-code to take advantage of this offer before you pay. Have you ever wanted to build a tower made of letters? Wouldn’t it be fun to knock it over and watch all the glyphs crash into each other? Or what about an entire paragraph of text that can float like helium balloons? And what if you took a really nice shallow depth-of-field photograph of those balloons as they flew away into an orange sunset? This two-day workshop will focus on building and animating typography in three dimensions using the open-source program Blender and ST2, an extension that brings high-quality — and cutting-edge — typography to Blender. We’ll begin with an introduction to Blender: making objects, moving them around in three dimensions, creating simple lighting setups, getting the virtual camera in just the right spot with just the right aperture and focal length. And then we’ll jump into typography with ST2: choosing fonts, animating variable fonts, making words crash into each other, filling letters with (virtual) helium, throwing letters into (virtual) pools of water, reflecting letters in (virtual) funhouse mirrors — the options are truly endless. If time allows, we’ll also unlock procedural workflows in Blender, using both their Geometry Nodes visual programming language and Python for text-based scripting. By the end of the class, you’ll have your very own photorealistic 3D typography animation. What do you need to take this workshop? Just a laptop, an interest in graphic design, and a willingness to spend some time learning a somewhat odd program. (Blender is famous for its quirky — but powerful — interface.) Blender and ST2 are completely free and open source, but it would help if your laptop is fairly recent and/or powerful. Blender runs on almost all computers on Mac, Linux, and Windows, but it can get into trouble on older computers, and is in general more fun to use on computers that have some solid processing power. Here’s a page detailing the minimum system requirements. You might also want to be familiar with a video editing program (like Premiere or DaVinci Resolve) to put the final touches on your animations, though that’s more of a nice-to-have. After studying architectural history at Columbia University, Rob worked for a time as a programmer in San Francisco before starting Goodhertz, Inc., an audio software company, where he currently works on audio plugin interfaces, a programming library called Coldtype, and lots of videos that combine typography and music. Rob also plays clawhammer banjo, enjoys looking at buildings, and would love to talk to you about replacing your gas appliances with electric ones.
