Hockney and Piero: A Longer Look | The National Gallery
Aug 8–Oct 27, 2024 (UTC)ENDED
London
David Hockney, in his own words, has always been a looker. Throughout his career, Hockney has found inspiration in the work of other artists. He never tires of looking at paintings. For him, there’s magic in it every time, whether that’s enjoying a picture in a gallery or a much-loved poster at home.
This very personal show brings together two Hockney paintings, one showing his mother and father and the other depicting his friend, curator Henry Geldzahler. They are displayed with the thread that ties them together, Piero della Francesca’s ‘The Baptism of Christ’.
‘My Parents’ and ‘Looking at Pictures on a Screen’ both include images of paintings from the National Gallery, a place Hockney knows and has loved throughout his long career. The artists whose portraits and landscapes line the walls are to him, his contemporaries. Their paintings inspire him today as much as any other influence on his work.
The exhibition, part of our Bicentenary celebrations, is a chance to slow down, to take in what’s in front of us and enjoy life-enhancing art in the Gallery. Just like Hockney’s parents and friend Geldzahler, let’s take a longer look.

The Silk Roads have been in use for thousands of years, but this visually stunning exhibition focuses on a defining period in its history, between around 500 and 1000 AD. This period saw a major leap in connectivity, and the rise of universal religions that linked communities across continents.
Working in partnership with 29 national and international partners, the exhibition displays objects from many regions and cultures, alongside collections from the British Museum, offering a unique opportunity to see objects from along the Silk Roads. From Indian garnets found in Suffolk to Iranian glass unearthed in Japan, they reveal the astonishing influence of these networks.
A focus on objects from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, never before seen in the UK, also emphasises the importance of Central Asia to this transcontinental story.

Dexter Dalwood: English Painting | Lisson Gallery
2024年9月27日–11月9日 (UTC)ENDED
London
Dexter Dalwood’s inaugural exhibition with Lisson Gallery represents a return to the artist’s homeland and to the subject of what it might mean to be an ‘English’ painter. After an initial period at a residency in Mexico in 2017, Dalwood moved there to live and work fulltime, since 2022. Now, from this relative distance, he has begun to re- consider his attachments with English art history and the culture of his youth, growing up in 1970s and ’80s Britain. The question of whether national identity can be determined or distilled through art is explored in this new group of paintings that consider the legacies of traditional genres, such as landscape or the lowlier practice of horse portraiture, all the way up to twentieth-century movements including the Bloomsbury Group and Pop Art.

Discover Constable & The Hay Wain | The National Gallery
2024年10月1日–2025年2月2日 (UTC)ENDED
London
Find out what lies behind the making of 'The Hay Wain' and its iconic status in British art. Through paintings including George Morland’s building storm and the atmospheric light of William Mulready’s farrier shop, we look at how Constable’s contemporaries created rural scenes. William Blake’s mystic works take us into the realm of the spiritual landscape while we experience the poetic and political landscape through contemporary poetry and prints. We bring together sketches of the scene the artist made over twenty years before producing the finished work in his London studio. When early 19th-century visitors saw Constable’s 'Hay Wain' some found his truthful vision of the Suffolk landscape to be quite radical. Today, over 200 years later, the painting is considered a traditional image of the English countryside. This status has led artists and activists to reinterpret, edit, and react to the painting, particularly in light of our changing climate. To tell the story of 'The Hay Wain', our journey through England’s landscape at the turn of the 19th century will bring together works by artists Constable himself admired and images made by artists in response to his own painting.
