Metrocentre - Sonder Winter Gravel Series | Alpkit Gateshead
Dec 15, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Gateshead
During the winter months, even the most hardy and adventurous off-road riders can sometimes need a little extra encouragement to get out and pedal! Whether that be the promise of tasty snacks in a warm shop at the end of a muddy spin round the local trails, or swapping adventure tales with the rider next to you to take your mind off your numb fingers...we've got you covered with our Sonder Winter Gravel Series! Each ride will start from one of Alpkit’s flagship stores located in some of the best cycling locations in the UK. Route 5 will start from Alpkit Metrocentre and will be a self-supported ride leaving the store at 10AM, lasting roughly 3-5 hours depending on your speed. A GPX file of the route will be sent out to all participants who have confirmed their booking through Eventbrite, on the Thursday before the event. The route can be completed fast or at your own pace, we encourage those of all abilities to take part and have lots of fun! Just remember, this is a social ride with gravel enthusiasts and you are fully self-supported. Please come equipped with everything you would bring on a solo ride (including a helmet) and be aware that the very nature of being self-supported means you are your own mechanic for this ride, so although we all hope it won't happen... be prepared to fix a puncture by the side of the trail or handle anything else that may occur en route! Also bear in mind that the weather can be changeable at this time of year, so please dress accordingly to the forecast to ensure you stay warm and comfortable for the duration of the event. (We also recommend bringing a spare set of clothes for travelling home as you may get wet and muddy!) Back at Alpkit there will be cakes and weather-specific refreshments (the soup went down a treat last year) and plenty of time to chat bikes, routes and all things adventure with staff and fellow riders. Tickets will be £7 and all proceeds will be donated to the Alpkit Foundation. Hope to see you there!

We're pleased to present The Waiting Gardens of the North by renowned Iraqi-American artist Michael Rakowitz. Commissioned by Baltic in partnership with the IWM 14-18 NOW Legacy Fund , this major project responds to conflict by, figuratively and literally, nurturing a community and an evolving indoor garden landscape.
The garden will be inhabited by Rakowitz’s cardboard sculptures that attempt to reappear the archaeological cultural heritage that has been looted or destroyed in Iraq and Syria since the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.
From the ‘seeds’ of this hanging garden we’ll host events, workshops, grow plants and create tinctures, recipes, and poultices both onsite and offsite that promote healing and recovery for the mind and body. The garden, at the end of the exhibition, will sprawl into the city in small parts to a network of community and school gardens, expanding its footprint beyond Baltic.

Hannah Perry works across installation, sculpture, film and printmaking. Perry continuously generates and manipulates materials to develop an often candid, and personal exploration of mental and emotional health in our contemporary, hyper-networked society.
This exhibition will consider the intersection of industry, class, gender and labour. The psychologically-charged installation will use materials, from sheet metal to car lacquer, body wrap and hydraulics, that are often associated with manual occupations in manufacturing and industry. Drawing on the artist’s personal history growing up in a working-class family in the north of England, the new commission explores shifting cultural and social values, shaped by the economic forces of capitalism and their effects on mental and emotional health.
Capturing the nuances of inter-generational and gendered ideas of labour, in a context of struggle, economic instability, uncertainty and precariousness, the artwork reflects on the artist’s own personal experience –steel, hydraulics, and shock absorbers, are choreographed to resemble a pelvis during labour. The work captures the force, violence, struggle, shock and trauma of the transition and its brutal, constrained power.
