Jewish Renewal & the Teachings of Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi | Cityview Church
May 1, 2025 (UTC-7)
Vancouver
JEWISH SPIRITUAL PRACTICE | Jewish Renewal and the Teachings of Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi
A Four-Part Exploration of Spiritual Innovation and Tradition
Thursdays, 7-8:30pm | May 1, 15, 29 & Jun 12 | With Rabbi Arik Labowitz
Join us for a four-part journey into the heart of Jewish Renewal, inspired by the visionary teachings of Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi. Jewish Renewal is not a denomination but a dynamic approach to Jewish life that seeks to revitalize tradition with deep spirituality, inclusivity, and engagement with contemporary wisdom.
In this series, we will explore Reb Zalman’s groundbreaking ideas, tracing their roots in Hasidic thought, Kabbalah, and interfaith dialogue while considering how they continue to shape Jewish practice today. Each session will offer a blend of learning, discussion, and experiential practices that invite us to engage with Jewish tradition in a renewed and meaningful way.
Session 1: Renewing the Spirit – The Foundations of Jewish Renewal
Discover the core principles of Jewish Renewal and Reb Zalman’s vision for a spiritually vibrant Judaism. We’ll explore concepts such as paradigm shifts, deep ecumenism, and the role of personal experience in shaping Jewish practice.
Session 2: Prayer, Music, and Mysticism – Expanding Our Connection to the Divine
Reb Zalman was deeply influenced by Hasidic joy, contemplative prayer, and musical expression. This session will examine his approach to tefillah (prayer), meditation, and song as pathways to deepening our spiritual lives.
Session 3: Eco-Kashrut and Holistic Judaism – Ethics for a Changing World
How do we bring Jewish values into modern challenges? We’ll explore Reb Zalman’s concept of eco-kashrut, sustainability, and the ways Jewish Renewal calls us to a holistic, ethical approach to living in harmony with the world.
Session 4: Paradigm Shifts and the Future of Judaism
Reb Zalman taught that Judaism must evolve while staying rooted in its sacred traditions. We’ll discuss his ideas about leadership, interfaith relationships, and the future of Jewish spirituality in an ever-changing world.
Each session will include interactive discussions, text study, and experiential practices. Whether you are new to Jewish Renewal or looking to deepen your understanding, this series will offer a rich opportunity for exploration and connection.

Tintype Photography Sessions with Geoffrey Wallang | The Ironworks
May 3, 2025 (UTC-7)
Vancouver
Get your tintype portrait made using an antiquarian method called Wetplate Collodion Photography. This method of photography was invented by Frederick Scott in 1851, and the chemicals, formulas and techniques haven't changed in over 170 years! With Geoffrey Wallang as your guide, you will be intructed on how to sit, stand, or even how certain colours transform in the finished product. (Reds turns to black, blues turn to white).
"For me, using this medium gives me a sense of purpose as it is very involved, slow and methodical... and at times, unpredictable." says Geoffrey.
This process of photography is a real alchemical treat to behold and the end results seem magical. Each session takes 30mins, 10 mins for your picture to be taken and 20-25 mins for the tintype process to unfold. You will walk away with a beautiful 4"x5" tintype plate, with an option for an additional plate for an extra $150.
Solo portraits, couples, families and pets are all welcome!
Geoffrey is a champ at taking photos of beloved animal companions.
Book your timeslot when you select your ticket. Tickets get you a photo session with Geoffrey AND entry to the Witches Bloom Market.
