Strains and Potential Gains: Trump’s Evolving Worldview and Central Asia | CGIS South Building, Tsai Auditorium (S010)

Apr 18, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Cambridge
Conferences
Following the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and Russian invasion of Ukraine, the emerging foreign and economic policies of President Trump have added a third shock that could fundamentally lead to a paradigm shift in Central Asia. After a hopeful beginning, including calls between President Trump and regional leaders, and supportive testimony during the Senate confirmation testimony of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the airwaves have been dominated by international crises and tariff levies, leaving it unclear when, if ever, the Administration will upgrade the relationship. The critical question is how President Trump’s evolving worldview, including his overtures to Russia and China, will affect American interests and domestic political developments in this strategically located and endowed region. Will the administration’s anti-globalism and great power nationalism lead to greater or lesser American engagement with Central Asia? How should leaders respond in the Central Asia 5 – Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan? Join us to discuss these questions following the keynote address by Dr. Marsha McGraw Olive, faculty of Johns Hopkins SAIS, on Strains and Potential Gains: Trump’s Evolving Worldview and the Future of Central Asia. Great, big, beautiful life is her sixth novel. She lives and writes in the American Midwest. Find her occasionally on Instagram @EmilyHenryWrites . ABOUT GREAT BIG BEAUTIFUL LIFE Two writers compete for the chance to tell the larger-than-life story of a woman with more than a couple of plot twists up her sleeve in this dazzling and sweeping novel from Emily Henry. Alice Scott is an eternal optimist still dreaming of her big writing break. Hayden Anderson is a Pulitzer-prize winning human thundercloud. And they’re both on balmy Little Crescent Island for the same reason: to write the biography of a woman no one has seen in years—or at least to meet with the octogenarian who claims to be the Margaret Ives. Tragic heiress, former tabloid princess, and daughter of one of the most storied (and scandalous) families of the twentieth century. Margaret invites them both for a one-month trial period, after which she’ll choose the person who’ll tell her story. But the problem is, Margaret is only giving each of them pieces of her story. Pieces they can’t swap to put together because of an ironclad NDA and an inconvenient yearning pulsing between them every time they’re in the same room. And it’s becoming abundantly clear that their story—just like the tale Margaret’s spinning—could be a mystery, tragedy, or love ballad . . . depending on who’s telling it. SESSION AMERICANA with Eleanor Buckland Night-Mystery Guest | Lizard Lounge

Event is 21+ GA $25/$30 at the door Reserved Tables $60 Doors at 7 SESSION AMERICANA is thrilled to return to the venue that saw the group gel into what has become a 20 year journey of accessing the joy. For years the band held down a weekly Lizard residency that not only formed the core of the band’s support but also witnessed the birth of many new songs and introduced a wide variety of musical guests to an unsuspecting crowd each week. SESSION AMERICANA with Eleanor Buckland will once again call The Lizard Lounge home for four consecutive nights this April 22-25 with special guests starting at 7:30 every night! For the uninitiated SESSION AMERICANA is a cast of top-shelf players, singers, and writers who tour internationally, taking their own songs, plus hundreds more from the American songbook, on the road. Whether you catch Session Americana in a rock hall or on a festival stage, you’ll be a part of the intimate, raucous scene these players built years ago at Toad, the neighborhood bar where it all began in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Looking back, the group has had a natural, almost inevitable evolution from a loose bunch of friends sitting around swapping songs in a bar, to a hot-ticket weekly residency, to a touring collective. Along the way, the band has made nine records (so far), played clubs and festivals across the U.S. and Europe, and developed deep collaborative bonds with a wide community of musicians. Session Americana's diligent avoidance of music business “shoulds” has led the band down a quirky and joyful path through the music world. The result is evident in the musical prowess the players and singers bring to every show. Swapping instruments, trading off lead vocals and sharing songwriting credits, Session Americana is constantly exploring new collaborations and touring like a band out of time, always searching for a welcoming and homey venue, a long lunch with old friends, and a good glass of wine. https://www.sessionamericana.com/ Information Source: Lizard Lounge | eventbrite
