Writing Jewish Novels: An Author Talk With Tova Mirvis and Elizabeth Graver | Hummingbird Books

May 6, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Newton
Cultural Experiences
Join Hummingbird Books and Hadassah to learn about writing Jewish novels from "We Would Never" author Tova Mirvis and "Kantika" author Elizabeth Graver. This event will include an interview, audience Q+A, and book signing. Tickets: $32 - Includes a copy of "We Would Never" $18 - Admission Only About We Would Never: A riveting literary page-turner that explores the extremes to which a family will go to protect their own—for fans of Miranda Cowley Heller and Laura Dave. No one is more surprised than Hailey Gelman when she comes under suspicion for the murder of her soon-to-be ex-husband Jonah. Hailey—nicknamed Sunshine by her mother for her bright outlook and ever-present smile—is the peacemaker who has always tried to do what her family expects of her. The months leading up to Jonah’s death have been fraught, including a bitter separation and a messy custody battle over their young daughter, Maya. When Hailey files a motion to relocate to Florida so she can be near her family, the divorce begins to escalate, drawing in all the members of Hailey’s family, who are determined to help her however they can. Most invested is Sherry, Hailey’s mother who wants nothing more than to be close to her family. Then there’s Nate, Hailey’s devoted and protective older brother, as well as the patriarch, Solomon, who is keeping a secret of his own that threatens the stability and security Sherry has worked so hard to maintain. As the divorce spirals dangerously out of control, they are all forced to consider just how far they will go for each other. Part gripping mystery, part compassionate family drama, We Would Never explores what people are capable of when they feel cornered, and how, in the absence of forgiveness, love and hate can intertwine and turn deadly. About Kantika: A dazzling Sephardic multigenerational saga that moves from Istanbul to Barcelona, Havana, and New York, exploring displacement, endurance, and family as home. A kaleidoscopic portrait of one family’s displacement across four countries, Kantika —“song” in Ladino—follows the joys and losses of Rebecca Cohen, feisty daughter of the Sephardic elite of early 20th-century Istanbul. When the Cohens lose their wealth and are forced to move to Barcelona and start anew, Rebecca fashions a life and self from what comes her way—a failed marriage, the need to earn a living, but also passion, pleasure and motherhood. Moving from Spain to Cuba to New York for an arranged second marriage, she faces her greatest challenge—her disabled stepdaughter, Luna, whose feistiness equals her own and whose challenges pit new family against old. Exploring identity, place and exile, Kantika also reveals how the female body—in work, art and love—serves as a site of both suffering and joy. A haunting, inspiring meditation on the tenacity of women, this lush, lyrical novel from Elizabeth Graver celebrates the insistence on seizing beauty and grabbing hold of one’s one and only life. About Hummingbird Books: An independent, local female-owned and operated store, Hummingbird Books is a community destination for an extensive collection of adult and children’s books and showcases a mix of local and widely beloved authors. Hummingbird Books is a magical place where children discover a love of reading. In addition to its book selection, Hummingbird Books offers a variety of games, gift items, candy, and stationery, as well as in-store programming including story times, and book signings. About Hadassah Boston: Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, Inc., was founded over a century ago, before Israel was a state, and before women could vote. Since that time, the organization has remained unwavering in its commitment to women’s health and well-being, to Israel, and to Jewish values and continuity. But while Hadassah’s heritage and mission remain as strong as ever, the role of women and Jewish culture here and in Israel, has evolved over time. The organization, too, has evolved, taking on new challenges and developing new programs. Hadassah believes in building a world where our Jewish values in action create strong community and an enduring Israel. That’s why our entire focus is on connecting and empowering Jewish women to effect change. We’ve done this for over 100 years and we will do it for the next 100—advancing health and well-being, advocating for women, and building community in the US and Israel. We invite all women who share our interests and passions to join in—to put their values into actions with us and through our programs. Information Source: Hummingbird Books | eventbrite

Stefanie DeLuca: Creating Moves to Opportunity | Norris University Center

May 12, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Evanston
Conferences
Event will take place in Norris’ Northwestern room. Lunch will be served. Creating Moves to Opportunity: Mixed Methods Evidence on Barriers to Neighborhood Choice Low-income families often live in neighborhoods with fewer opportunities to get ahead, even when they have housing vouchers that would allow them to move to neighborhoods with more potential for upward mobility. In this IPR colloquium, Johns Hopkins sociologist Stefanie DeLuca will explore why through two randomized trials. In the first, housing voucher recipients were given information, financial support, and customized search assistance to move to higher-opportunity neighborhoods. The treatment increased the share of those moving to high-upward-mobility areas from 15% to 53%. The second randomized trial reveals customized support and search assistance were the primary drivers of this increase. Qualitative interviews done in both randomized trials show that the intervention increased families' optimism about new neighborhoods and housing, eased demands on families’ time and attention, and addressed their specific needs. Her findings imply that many low-income families do not necessarily prefer to stay in low-opportunity areas and that barriers to housing searches significantly increase residential segregation by income. About Stefanie DeLuca, IPR's Inaugural Visiting Scholar, May 2025 Stefanie DeLuca is the James Coleman Professor of Sociology and Social Policy and director of the Poverty and Inequality Research Lab at Johns Hopkins University, and a research principal at Harvard’s Opportunity Insights. She examines how housing, neighborhood, and education shape youth and family outcomes. She received her PhD from Northwestern in 2002 in education and social policy and was an IPR graduate research assistant during her PhD program. About IPR’s Visiting Scholars Program The program brings exceptional researchers to Northwestern for short residencies that foster collaboration and intellectual exchange with IPR faculty and students. IEEE Power and Energy Society - Boston Chapter 2025 ANNUAL BANQUET Featuring a talk from Ben Byboth, Director of Commercial Strategy and Business Development at Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) The Boston Chapter of IEEE PES welcomes you to our yearly celebration of our chapter and it's engineers. We will hear a talk from Ben Byboth from Commonwealth Fusion Systems detailing why fusion energy may be closer than we think! Speaker: Ben Byboth is the head of commercial strategy and business development at Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS). With a strong background in the energy sector, he previously held leadership positions at Eversource, Entergy, and NextEra, where he was responsible for launching new energy ventures, leading grid modernization efforts, operating power plants and creating innovative regulatory strategies. Drawing upon his eight years of service as a US Navy submariner, Ben is now focused on driving the commercialization of fusion energy at CFS. Ben earned an MBA from Tulane University and a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering Technologies. Abstract: Fusion Energy : Closer than you think Fusion energy offers the potential for a transformative shift in how we power our world: clean, abundant, and inherently safe. Recent progress in fusion energy research, particularly in areas like high-temperature superconductors, suggests that commercially viable fusion power may be achievable sooner than previously thought. This talk will argue that fusion energy is "closer than you think" by showcasing the rapid pace of innovation in fusion research and technology, with a focus on the progress of CFS, the world's largest private fusion company. We'll discuss the potential impact of fusion on addressing climate change and energy security, and outline the key steps needed to bring this game-changing energy source to reality. This presentation will provide an overview of the current state of the fusion industry that is accelerating progress towards net energy gain and sustainable fusion power plants. Includes: Buffet style dinner, cash bar and live jazz from Beacon Street Band Date: Tuesday, May 13, 2025 Time: Pre-dinner drinks at 6:00 pm, program commences at 6:30 pm Location: Four Points by Sheraton Boston Newton 320 Washington Street Newton, MA 02468 Sponsorship opportunities available! Chasing Shadows: Cyber Espionage, Subversion & a Global Fight for Democracy | Segal Visitors Center

For well over a decade, the University of Toronto's Citizen Lab has lifted the lid on dozens of covert cyber espionage operations targeting innocent citizens everywhere. Drawing from his newly published book, Chasing Shadows , director Ron Deibert recounts how his small team of investigators disarmed cyber mercenaries and helped to improve the digital security of billions of people worldwide through their evidence-based investigations. Chasing Shadows provides a front-row seat to a dark underworld of digital espionage, disinformation and subversion. There, autocrats and dictators peer into their targets’ lives with the mere press of a button, spreading their tentacles of authoritarianism through a digital ecosystem that is insecure, poorly regulated, and prone to abuse. This event is co-hosted by the Weinberg College Center for International & Area Studies' Program of International Studies and the Buffett Institute for Global Affairs at Northwestern University. About the speaker Ron Deibert (PhD, University of British Columbia) is a Professor in Political Science and Director of the Citizen Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy at the University of Toronto. The Citizen Lab is a multifaceted laboratory that emphasizes information and communication technologies, human rights, and global security research, featuring over 160 groundbreaking reports on cyber espionage, spyware, and internet censorship. Deibert also co-founded OpenNet Initiative and Information Warfare Monitor, which are projects that investigate internet censorship and surveillance. He was also one of the founders and (former) VP of global policy and outreach of Psiphon , a tool that helps users bypass internet censorship. What happens when personal and business branding come together? We call this "Brand Fusion". Branding isn't just about logos and packaging anymore. Personal branding, the process by which professionals differentiate themselves, is the cornerstone for business growth and development in the Digital Age. Welcome to "Brand Fusion", an in-person workshop where we will explore your personal and business brand and how these can lead to business growth. This is a hands-on gathering designed for entrepreneurs and small business owners who want to get noticed and elevate to the next level, led by four brand and marketing experts: Rose Mills, Social Media Influence, will share how our first FUSION session helped her reimagine her social media business and redefine what social media success looks like — shifting businesses away from chasing vanity to influence the algorithm to adapting to the fast-changing digital world with strategies rooted in connection, relevance and trust. Isabelle Papoulias , Global Marketing Leader, has a powerful process for recognizing your worth — and setting the right price for it. She’ll walk us through how it works. Jennifer Schuman, Personal Brand Photographer , is back with her Personal Branding Field Guide to help you map out where you’re headed — both personally and professionally. Susan Tyson, Marketing, will introduce an AI tool that brings ease, clarity, and a little wow to your LinkedIn presence. This session will include a continental breakfast, breakout sessions, and networking with like-minded professionals over a lite lunch.
