About this event
Class Description
These are introductory classes designed for the beginner or newer practitioner. Participants will start their path of learning the Japanese Traditional Practice of Ikenobo Ikebana. Ikenobo is the oldest school of Ikebana in Japan starting in 587 AD and is the largest Ikebana School with 4.5 million members worldwide. The Ikenobo School has had a chapter in Colorado for over 50 years and encourages everyone from all walks of life to practice Ikebana. Jump in and start your learning anytime.
In these classes participants will learn the style called Shoka. There are over 10 different styles in Ikenobo all with different philosophies - Shoka is one of them. Shoka has a philosophy of arranging flowers as they grow – referred to as Shussho in Japanese. Participants will learn all about Japanese culture, traditional practices, and how to create spectacular Shoka arrangements. Refer to the pictures below. Please join us in celebrating this most auspicious practice.

for more photos and info.
Class Logistics
Class sessions at the Main Boulder Library are approximately 3.5 hours long. Please be on time. There will be 15 minutes of set up and preparation. A lecture about the day’s arrangement will be presented. The teacher will then perform a demonstration. Following the demonstration, students will create an arrangement following the demonstration example and the instructor will critique the final work.
Additional Class Dates coming up:
March 2; April 20 ;
May 11, June 8 2025
. Refer to additional class registration listing in Eventbrite at the bottom of the main page. Or go to www.ikebanaikenobokado.com . First come first served. Classes will be held each month in the Boulder Library System on Sundays. Check the listing.
Each class is different with different flowers and styles. Students are encouraged to sign up for as many classes as their personal availability allows. Ikebana is a lifelong pursuit in Japan and multiple classes are desired to learn the practice. Jump in anytime.
Equipment Needed
Ikebana students are required to have the following tools:
· Good quality scissors – a Japanese Ikenobo Hasami (scissors) is suggested.
· Branch pruner and craft scissors.
· Good quality Brass long needle flower Kenzan (pin frog) is essential. Round is preferred, at least 4 inches or more in diameter. The bigger the better. Please Do not bring a small diameter short needle kenzan or plastic kenzan – those will not work for these lessons.
· Towel
· Water bucket to take flowers home in.
· Table cover or plastic sheet.
· Paper Bag for plant clippings.
· Enough Medium angular gravel (1/4 inch) to fill your container to the top.
· Funnel-shaped ceramic container (see below).
· Water pitcher
If would like to purchase tools the suggested links are below (It is not recommended that you buy an inexpensive non-brass short needle kenzan that is often seen on internet sites for cheap prices. They typically break easily. Also do not purchase or bring a plastic kenzan - they do not work for this type of arrangement).

Japanese 4"D x 1.375"H HEAVY Ikebana Kenzan LONG NEEDLE Pin Frog Made in Japan | eBay

Ikenobo Ikebana Container
For class, each student will need a funnel-shaped japanese style flower container pictured below (english style flower vases are not advised - It is very difficult to make the correct style japanese arrangement in a non-japanese style vase). One can be purchased online or sometimes found at local Goodwill stores. The funnel shaped japanese containers are typically round and about 8 to 12 inches wide at the top, about 8 to 11 inches tall and must have a flat top edge and very small several inch base.
See example pictures below.
If you do not have or cannot find a funnel-shaped container, one may be borrowed from the instructor. There are a limited number available and you must reserve one at least five days prior to the class session – please contact the instructor. All borrowed containers must be returned at the end of the class session. No exceptions. Please do not bring any kind of food container or cylindrical container or english/western container – those will not work for the lesson. You must have enough gravel to fill your container to the top.
If you are unsure about your container selection please email a picture to the instructor for comment and useability.
Email instructor : ikenoboikebana@hotmail.com
Flower Material
All floral materials for the specific class that day will be provided by the instructor. Once the lesson is completed, you will be able to bring your materials home with you.
Ikenobo School of Ikebana
The history of Ikenobo is the history of ikebana. Ikebana began with Ikenobo and although over 550 years many other schools have branched off from Ikenobo, Ikenobo is said to be the origin of ikebana. Ikenobo’ s history encompasses both the traditional and the modern, the two continually interacting to encourage new development in today’s ikebana.
People in every era have loved flowers, but our predecessors in ikebana felt that flowers were not only beautiful but that they could reflect the passing of time and the feelings in their own hearts. When we sense plant’s unspoken words and silent movements we intensify our impressions through form, a form which becomes ikebana.
We arrange plants cut and removed from nature so that they are filled with new beauty when placed in a new environment. Rather than simply re-create the shape a plant had in nature, we create with branches, leaves, and flowers a new form which holds our impression of a plant’s beauty as well as the mark of our own spirit. Ikebana should also suggest the forces of nature with which plants live in harmony - branches bent by winter winds ... a leaf half-eaten by insects.
Ikenobo considers not only an open flower but also a flower’s bud beautiful, for within the bud is the energy of life’s opening toward the future. Past, present, future ... in each moment plants, and humans, respond to an ever-changing environment. Together with plants, humans are vital parts of nature and our arranging ikebana expresses this awareness.

Boulder Art Week: Mad Agriculture Photo Exhibit | Mad Agriculture
Apr 11, 2025 (UTC-6)ENDED
Boulder
Join Mad Agriculture on April 11 for an evening of art, storytelling and community. This evening is centered around a photography exhibit, with light snack and drinks provided.
Farmers are at the heart of the regenerative movement—stewarding healthier soils, restoring biodiversity, and strengthening our food system. Through striking images and personal narratives, this exhibit captures their resilience and the impact of USDA conservation programs in helping them adopt regenerative practices. These programs don’t just benefit farmers; they ensure the long-term sustainability of our food, water, and landscapes.
But today, this critical support is at risk. As political uncertainty looms over USDA funding, farmers are being forced to navigate an unpredictable future, shouldering financial and environmental risks alone. The stories in this exhibit showcase what’s possible when farmers have the resources to care for their land and communities—but they also highlight what’s at stake if that support disappears.
Join us in celebrating these farmers and their work, and connect with the Mad Agriculture community as we reflect on the future of our food system. Advocate for continued conservation funding, support local farms, and invest in a food future that sustains us all.

Christine M. Tracy -- "Just Trust Life" | Boulder Book Store
Apr 16, 2025 (UTC-6)ENDED
Boulder
Christine M. Tracy will speak about and sign her new book,
Just Trust Life: A Journey with Teilhard de Chardin
,
on Wednesday, April 16th at 6:30pm, at Boulder Bookstore.
About the Book:
In this gritty memoir about tackling life's challenges with the promise of transcendence, Teilhardian scholar Christine M. Tracy illustrates how seemingly chance encounters with Teilhard's work catalyzed her emotional and spiritual expansion. To read
Just Trust Life
is to receive a download of Teilhard's mystical energy-his love as an evolutionary force. Yet this book is much more than a poetic and practical introduction to the life and teachings of this revered mystic.
Through finely tuned scenes from Tracy's life, we learn what it means to be a "spiritual being having a human experience." As Teilhard's spirit accompanied her through struggles with addiction, infidelity, divorce, a house fire, and a near-death-experience, Tracy realizes that we are never alone-and we have the power to wake up. In this brisk read with a powerful takeaway that belongs on every nightstand, readers will discover Teilhard's promise: if one can "just trust life...life will bring you high."

Explorations on a journey through the darkest and brightest moments of our lives, the poems gathered here are explorations of loss, of thanksgiving, of transformation. Robin Walter -- "Little Mercy," with Ramona Ausubel | Boulder Book Store
Apr 29, 2025 (UTC-6)ENDED
Boulder
Robin Walter will speak about and sign her new book,
Little Mercy
,
on Tuesday, April 29th at 6:30pm, at Boulder Bookstore. She will be in conversation with Ramona Ausubel for this special event.
About the Book:
In award-winning poet Robin Walter’s debut collection,
Little Mercy
, writing and looking—seeing feelingly—become a practice in radical care. These poems pursue moments of shared recognition, when looking up to see a deer across a stream, or when sunlight passes through wingtip onto palm, the self found in other, the river in vein of wrist.
Attuned to the transparent beauty in the natural world, Walter’s poems are often glancing observations unspooling down the page, their delicacies belying their powers of profound knowing. The formal logic of this work is the intricate architecture of a nest. Each line becomes a blade of grass, each dash a little twig, each parenthesis a small feather—all woven together deliberately, seemingly fragile but held fast with surprising strength. In their lyric variations, repetitions, and fragments, employed toward a deep attention to wren, river, and reflection, the human almost falls away entirely, a steady and steadying state of being that is unconscious, expansive.
Written out of a broken landscape in a broken time,
Little Mercy
is a book of gratitude, one that draws our inner selves to the present and living world, to the ways we can break and mend.

Vanessa Blackstone & Olivia Sinaiko -The Pain Reprocessing Therapy Workbook | Boulder Book Store
Apr 30, 2025 (UTC-6)ENDED
Boulder
Vanessa M. Blackstone and Olivia S. Sinaiko will speak about and sign their new book,
The Pain Reprocessing Therapy Workbook: Using the Brain's Neuroplasticity to Break the Cycle of Chronic Pain
,
on Wednesday, April 30th at 6:30pm, at Boulder Bookstore.
About the Book:
Do you suffer from back, knee, or neck pain, migraines, arthritis, fibromyalgia, or any other condition that causes chronic discomfort? Have you searched far and wide for answers, hoping against hope to find lasting relief--only to find yourself disappointed and in pain again? This discouraging cycle can be as damaging to your quality of life as the pain itself, especially if your pain has been minimized or disregarded. If you're tired of running into roadblocks when it comes to finding real solutions, it might be time for a new approach. It's time to leverage the natural power and flexibility of your brain, so you can finally free yourself from chronic pain and take charge of your life.
At the heart of this groundbreaking workbook is pain reprocessing therapy (PRT)--the most effective current treatment for chronic pain. PRT is a highly streamlined, evidence-based method that actually
retrains
the brain to accurately interpret sensory signals from the body, interrupting the perpetual pain cycle so you can find some relief. You'll begin by exploring the ins and outs of
how
pain works, with special emphasis on understanding the critical relationship between pain and fear. You'll also discover a wealth of in-the-moment tips to help you quickly recognize the aspects of life that trigger or aggravate your pain--so you can handle it quickly, healthily, and move on with less pain.
If your quest for relief has led to nothing but frustration, shame, stigmatization, and endless agony, the answers found in this friendly guide will illuminate a path away from pain and toward lasting comfort and peace of mind. Go ahead, take the first step.

Women's Shamanic Cacao Ceremony
& Voice Activation at the StarHouse
An Emerald Earth Event with Genevieve Ayala
women only
@ the StarHouse
Opening our voice is not just for singing. It's for
speaking our truth, embodying our authentic self, and feeling empowered to navigate our life in the ways we desire to
. Our voice is deeply tied to our emotions. The more emotions we've suppressed throughout our life, the more likely we are to have a tighter or more inhibited vocal channel.
We will be using
shamanic healing and the loving medicine of Cacao
to move emotions from our heart space in order to
create room for our voices to flow more freely
. We will then move into a vocal activation to
open our voices together
in the beautiful StarHouse Temple space.
We are in the second month of a 4-month series around the shamanic medicine wheel.
(You do not need to attend all 4 or have attended the first one, all are welcome!)
We now turn to the direction of
South
of this shamanic medicine wheel, with the element of
Water
, invoking the medicines of
Cacao
and
Bobinsana
(the mermaid spirit of the Amazon), through
meditation, emotional alchemy, and voice activation.
learn about the
shamanic medicine wheel
receive a
prayerful Cacao blessing
with Cacao coming from a local women's collective in Guatemala and with Bobinsana tincture from Peru

emotional alchemy
journey

temple
Cacao
is the unprocessed original form of chocolate. This Cacao comes from Guatemala, where it was considered sacred by the Mayans, called the "Food of the Gods". It opens the heart space both energetically and physically by expanding the blood vessels and is considered a superfood. It brings sensations of bliss, connection, and love.
Bobinsana
is a tree found in the Amazon River basin. The Shipibo indigenous tribes in Peru often prescribe Bobinsana Tea for heart healing, emotional comfort, and trauma healing. She is also considered the "Mermaid Spirit of the Amazon" as she brings us to the emotional depths like the depths of water.
The
Shamanic Medicine Wheel
is an earth-based technology of creating an energetic container by calling in the directions, each associated with the elements of alchemy, to perform ceremony with the intention of alchemy or expansion.
Journeying around the Shamanic Medicine Wheel:
Third Eye Activation
- North/Air/Blue Lotus/Isis - April 5th 1-4pm
Heart Healing & Voice Activation
