Normalized Alterity: Visualizing Black Spatial Humanities | Richard W. Burkhardt Building room 222
Mar 21, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Muncie
This article, titled "Normalized Alterity: Visualizing Black Spatial Humanities," explores the need for more inclusive and just visual representations of Black spatial collectivity. It recognizes the potential of digital mapping and narrative cartography in providing radical and democratized visualizations. However, it also acknowledges the historical and contemporary anti-Blackness in mapping, which requires caution. While critical cartographic approaches to eschew normativity are important, there is a risk of diminishing and distorting historically Black communities. Therefore, this article raises questions about the extent to which visually countering the erasure of Black communities in dominant maps can avoid appropriating the medium. To address this issue, the article presents animations created in collaboration with a professional animator. These animations feature audio clips from oral histories collected in rural Southern communities of the US. They effectively counter historic erasure without reinforcing the hegemony of dominant cartographic productions. This thought-provoking article invites readers to engage with the complexities of visualizing Black spatial humanities and encourages a critical examination of the power dynamics inherent in mapping practices.

Oct 29, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Muncie
Celebrate the iconic Bob Ross on his 82nd birthday with Ball State PBS and Certified Ross Instructor® Chris Taylor. This exclusive painting workshop will be held in Studio B, where Bob filmed seasons 16 through 31 of The Joy of Painting®. The studio lights will shine bright like they did for Bob!Chris Taylor is a Certified Bob Ross Instructor® in Muncie, Indiana. As a mentor to Chris, Bob would exchange letters with the budding artist and whenever he was in town he would try to meet with Chris – often inviting him to the television studio to watch the filming of THE JOY OF PAINTING®. To this day, Chris speaks fondly of the support Bob showed him. While he encouraged Chris’s artistic skill, more importantly, Bob supported Chris in finding his life’s passion. In the early 1980s, landscape painter Bob Ross began taping THE JOY OF PAINTING in the original WIPB-TV studio – a two-story yellow L.L. Ball home in Muncie, Indiana. Ross filmed this simple, soothing half-hour painting series in the small first-floor studio of the house, which still bears the “X” where he stood as he painted his “happy little trees. In 1988, WIPB and the show moved to the Ball State University campus into the Edmund F. Ball Communication Building and Studio B. Decades after that first episode aired (Jan. 11, 1983), THE JOY OF PAINTING is still airing all over the world and Bob Ross’ soft-spoken legacy lives on. Participants will paint Bob’s Autumn Woods on the same size canvas (18x24) as Bob did on television. Canvas and use of all Bob Ross supplies are included. If you need accommodation to participate fully in this event, please reach out to Accessibility.BSPM@bsu.edu.
