We Need To Talk About Death, Dying and Funerals | Museum of Cambridge

May 3, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Cambridge
Cultural Experiences
I’m on a mission to help spread the word about the creative potential of funerals, farewells and celebrations of life, and to get us thinking and talking more about our own wishes for our deaths. This is the first in a series of death and funeral planning parties. Yes - you heard me right, parties. This doesn't have to be something we are afraid of, something we shy away from talking about. The talking bit is extra important, because latest figures suggest that as many as 80% of people in the UK haven't talked to friends or family about their end of life wishes. And, if there's one thing that we can be sure of, it's that our lives will - at some point - end. If we tell the important people in our lives what we want, then we are giving them a real gift. We aren't leaving them guessing or worrying they've done the wrong thing. There is so much joy, creativity and colour that can be brought into these ceremonies, but often we don’t know how - or we're too afraid to think about it. Over two hours, you’ll be able to be together in a gentle, relaxed and friendly environment, hosted by me, where you’ll be invited to develop your own language around death and dying, and encouraged to think about your own end of life wishes. You’ll also be able to record those wishes using the brilliant Get Mortal packs devised by the brilliant Dead Good Legacise, to share with your nearest and dearest. Come along, and let me show you that it really can be a positive experience talking about death. 11 o'clock to 1 o'clock in the Enid Porter Room. Light refreshments provided, and every person who comes along will go away with a personalised record of their end of life wishes. Information Source: Alex Collis | eventbrite

Cristóbal de Morales: Missa Ave Maria & Missa Si bona suscepimus | Little Saint Mary's Parish Church, Cambridge

May 3, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Cambridge
Concerts
Classical
Online box office closes at 11am on Sat 3rd May. Thereafter tickets are available on the door. Cristóbal de Morales (c.1500-1553) was the first Spanish composer to enjoy an international reputation. After early choirmaster posts in Spain, he was appointed to the Papal Choir in Rome in 1535 by Pope Paul III. He stayed there for ten years, publishing eight Magnificats and fifteen Masses. On his return to Spain he took up a series of prominent choirmasterships, but poor health and a surly disposition meant he never stayed anywhere long, and he died, possibly from malaria, in 1553. Morales’ Masses are his greatest achievement. In this concert the men of DE PROFUNDIS perform two outstanding examples - one based on the famous plainchant tune Ave Maria, and the other a sumptous setting for six voices based on Verdelot's heartfelt motet Si bona suscepimus. The programme ends with the Magnificat tertii toni. This concert is the fourth instalment of an ambitious twelve-year project by De Profundis to perform and record the complete Masses and Magnificats by Morales, conducted by Robert Hollingworth and Eamonn Dougan. EAMONN DOUGAN is a renowned baritone who sings regularly with the Sixteen, I Fagiolini and Alamire. He is also Associate Conductor of the Sixteen, founding Director of Britten Sinfonia Voices, and a Visiting Professor to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he teaches ensemble singing. Along with Robert Hollingworth and Nicholas Mulroy he hosts Choral Chihuahua, a podcast series about all things choral. Information Source: De Profundis, conducted by Eamonn Dougan | eventbrite

Powell (b. in Boston, MA) paints landscapes that navigate the intersection between realism and abstraction, revealing a dialogue between materiality and memory. Her paintings serve as visual sanctuaries to hold life's complexities, and invite viewers to reconnect with the moments of wonder and freedom experienced in childhood encounters with nature. Powell transforms natural elements—light through trees, water reflections, flowers, horizon lines— into thoughtful responses to contemporary anxiety and depression. Powell is a member of the Quin House Boston and the Copley Society of Art (Co|So). Her paintings are part of private collections across the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia. Her work has been sold at auction at the New Britain Museum of American Art, the Peabody Essex Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) Boston. Powell was featured in Artsy, Boston Magazine, The Boston Globe, Architectural Digest, Marie Claire, and more. She graduated from Stanford Law School and Yale University. ABOUT THE BOOK Now available, The Pillowpuffs (Helios House Press, 2025), Powell’s first children's book, inspires children and grown-ups to slow down and appreciate the world around us.
