Long Problems: Governing in an era of existential risk | Homerton College, Fellows Auditorium
May 29, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Cambridge
Global challenges today—from accelerating climate change and pandemics to transformative technologies—pose risks that unfold over decades or centuries and threaten the very foundations of our societies. In his public lecture, Professor Thomas Hale (University of Oxford) will draw on his new book
Long Problems: Climate Change and the Challenge of Governing Across Time
to explain why existential risks defy institutions designed for short-term crises and how reframing our politics around long-term cooperation can make these problems manageable.
Following Professor Hale’s presentation, Lord Martin Rees (Astronomer Royal, University of Cambridge), Professor Harriet Bulkeley (Durham University & Utrecht University), and Ms Pamla Gopaul (African Union Development Agency–NEPAD) will offer their reflections and perspectives on the lecture’s themes, highlighting the implications for science, policy, and international cooperation.
The event will conclude with a moderated discussion and audience Q&A, inviting participants from all backgrounds to engage with the urgent question: how can we rethink governance to safeguard our shared future? Dr Kennedy Mbeva (CSER, University of Cambridge) will moderate the session.
The event is co-organised by Centre for the Study of Existential Risk, the Centre for Climate Engagement and Hughes Hall.

Cambridge - Powered Up Business Networking - May 2025 | Station Tavern
May 29, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Cambridge
Come and join an amazing vibe, our Cambridge meetings are always fun!
Powered Up Business Networking (PUBNetworking) is an “out of hours” networking event that does away with the usual networking formalities.
You’ll get to learn about the people behind the business - without a torrent of sales pitches …and bland tea and coffee. And you’ll get to have a lot of laughs whilst you’re at it!
As you know, the best business connections are the people you want to spend time with outside of work. They’re the people you can trust, and whose company you enjoy. PUBNetworking is the place to find them.
We have a loose structure, relaxed atmosphere and the opportunity to learn from other business experts - with no strings attached.
Just bring yourself, your e-ticket and your best smile and you’re good to go.
Each event has four objectives…
Meet awesome people
We have a wide range of business people that attend. From start-ups to those with 30 years experience - across a wide range of industries. Everyone that attends is under no obligation to attend (we have no memberships, or contracts) so they’re there purely to meet people like you.
Build long-lasting relationships
We believe in a 'people buy from people' philosophy. In a relaxed environment, everyone feels comfortable and the connections you make are less forced, and more genuine. You’ll get to know each person in more detail - and have a good time doing so.
Learn things without pitches
Each event is productive and valuable. And we want everyone to walk away having learned something new. Our speakers offer genuine value, without sneaky sales pitches. We want you to take what you learn and use it to benefit your business.
Have fun
And above all, we want you to have fun. Sometimes that’s easier with a drink in your hand (it also makes the terrible jokes slightly more tolerable…). Our networking events are all about you, your passions and your business success.
What’s happening this month?
This month, our speaker is the legend that is Jim Doyle! His talk is called "The missing ingredient of creating your future."
Jim once manifested £10,000 in an hour – and scared himself senseless. Then he spent years cracking why most of us fail to create the life we want.
Now he helps others make it happen – in health, wealth and work – using energy work AI can’t explain.
Curious? You should be. Come find out what’s missing.
Location
Held at The Station Tavern in the city centre, we have their function room all to ourselves. And a great selection of drinks too!
Plan for the night:
7.30 - Meet, greet & network. Your chance to sign in, grab a drink and speak to anyone you’d like.
7.50 - Introduction from Anna.
7.55 - Your chance to tell the room about yourself with a PUBNetworking difference…
8.20 - 1-2-1 with someone you like.
8.35 - Grab a drink/have a break.
8.50 - Presentation from Jim.
9.15 - Close the meeting and optional further networking.
9.30 - End/move into The Station Tavern to have a further drink should you wish.
Important:
Due to the nature of the venue, and room size, there are a limited number of spaces available.
If you’d like to come along and enjoy a great evening of laughs, laid-back networking and actionable business help, reserve your space with an e-ticket now.
Tickets cost: £14.77
(And there’s probably no better way to spend it!)
See you there!

Total Defense - Andrew Preston, at Heffers Bookshop | Heffers Bookshop
May 29, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Cambridge
The story of how FDR and fellow New Dealers created the idea of national security, transforming the meaning of defense and vastly expanding the US government’s responsibilities.
National security may seem like a timeless notion. States have always sought to fortify themselves, and the modern state derives its legitimacy from protecting its population. Yet national security in fact has a very particular, very American, history—and a surprising one at that. The concept of national security originates in the 1930s, as part of a White House campaign in response to the rise of fascism. Before then, national self-defense was defined in terms of protecting sovereign territory from invasion. But President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his circle worried that the US public, comforted by two vast oceans, did not take seriously the long-term risks posed by hyper-militarization abroad. New Dealers developed the doctrine of national security, Andrew Preston argues, to supplant the old idea of self-defense: now even geographically and temporally remote threats were to be understood as harms to be combated, while ideological competitors were perilous to the “American way of life.”
Total Defense
shows it was no coincidence that a liberal like Roosevelt promoted this vision. National security, no less than social security, was a New Deal promise: the state was obliged to safeguard Americans as much from the guns and warships of Nazi Germany and imperial Japan as from unemployment and poverty in old age. The resulting shift in threat perception—among policymakers and ordinary citizens alike—transformed the United States, spearheading massive government expansion and placing the country on a permanent war footing
Andrew Preston is Professor of American History and Fellow of Clare College at Cambridge University. He is the author of
The War Council: McGeorge Bundy, the NSC, and Vietnam
, the prizewinning
Sword of the Spirit, Shield of Faith: Religion in American War and Diplomacy
and the forthcoming
Total Defense: The New Deal and the Invention of National Security
. His writing has appeared in the
Washington Post, London Review of Books

Intermediate / Advanced MTB Ride @ Puslinch | Puslinch Tract Conservation Area
May 29, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Cambridge
Location:
Puslinch / Twin Ponds @ 6:15pm
Parking Map:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/qSC5fP3Hn8uVSWKd9
Trailforks:
https://www.trailforks.com/region/puslinch-tract--twin-ponds/
Carpool Time & Meeting Place:
For anyone who needs a ride, people will be meeting in the Freewheel back parking lot and driving out at 5:30pm. If you have a ride and are meeting us at Puslinch, we are aiming to ride for 6:15pm. The parking lot at Ppuslinch can fill up so give yourself time if driving.
Puslinch Trails:
The trails are a good mix of fast and flowy with some technical areas and lots of things to play on. If you find areas of the Dundas Valley technical, please think about bringing knee pads. They are never a bad idea.
Details:
Freewheel's Thursday MTB group rides are for intermediate to advanced riders (not ideal for beginners) looking to explore and enjoy our local trails with other mountain bikers. We prefer to keep these rides fun and social and encourage everyone to get to know each other. This is not a race so riding alone defeats the purpose of a group ride.
Each ride will be split into groups depending on the number of riders who show up that week. Each group will have an official Freewheel leader and sweep so no one will be dropped or left alone at the back. We will encourage one another, celebrate the wins, and help each other out when needed.
Through the season, ride locations will change from week to week so that we can explore all the amazing trail networks in the area. All information on When & Where to meet (or cancelation due to weather) will be communicated to attendees via email.
The weather does not always play nice so we will keep an eye on it each week and provide updates as best we can. In a perfect season, we do not have to cancel any rides but it may happen from time to time. We also encourage responsible trail usage so we will not host group rides when the trails are too muddy. In some cases, the weather may cause us to change locations last minute so that we can look for dry trails. We will let you know of changes as early as possible.
Sign up / in
Please register well in advance of each ride. Signing up in the parking lot holds things up as we wait. This year we are asking everyone to check into each ride by having their ticket ready to be scanned. Look for the registration table/person at each ride.
As a participant, you are expected to:
Be ready to roll at 6:00 sharp (6:30 for destination rides).
Arrive early enough for your pre-ride preparations. It is not cool to hold up the whole group while you scramble to get ready.
Wear a cycling-specific helmet less than 5 years old
Dress appropriately for the activity and weather conditions.
Have an appropriate trail bike in good working order. No department store bikes (for your own safety). Our service technicians will not be available to do last-minute fixes on your bike.
Bring water and nutrition. Staying hydrated is important and snacks will keep your energy up. Bonking is not fun.
Have a good level of fitness. This is a physical activity that will include hills and an intermediate/advanced pace. It is not ideal for people looking to get back into fitness starting from scratch. (
ie; not Day 1 off the couch
)
Be self-sufficient. Mechanical issues happen and while our guides are happy to help as best they can, each rider should carry a mini-pump, spare tube, and a quick link suited for their own bike.
Bug spray and/or sunblock is also recommended.
Be considerate and supportive of others. Encourage each other as we push the edges of our comfort zones and try new things.
Remember that this is not a race! It's a social ride with like-minded riders.
We look forward to having you join us on Thursdays to ride bikes! Mountain bikes that is :)

11:25 – 12:55 – Panel 2 | Subject: ‘Toward or away from coorporation’
How might European and Asian countries work constructively together to address key regional challenges in the Indo-pacific. With the United States under Donald Trump departing from many of the core norms that have underpinned international relations and the rules based international order, what future is there for bilateral, mini and multilateral cooperation in the region? Are existing international frameworks fit for purpose, or are new mechanisms required to offset the risk of rising nationalism and the re-emergence of Great Power politics.
