Join us for a conversation between award-winning journalist and author of The Mother Code, Ruthie Ackerman, and New York Times best-selling author, Christie Tate. Each Ticket Includes:Attendance to conversation between Ruthie Ackerman and Christie TateOpen Q&AHardcover, signed copy of The Mother CodeDrinks and light bitesAbout The Mother Code: My Story of Love, Loss, and the Myths That Shape UsIn this propulsive memoir, an award-winning journalist blends history, science, and cultural criticism, to uncover whether motherhood outside of society’s rigid rules and expectations is possible—and whether she fits the mold for what a mother should be. The Mother Code subverts our ideas about parenting, womanhood, nature, and nurture. Ruthie Ackerman is that rare writer whose fierce intelligence is matched by her warmth and honesty. Her book brings us new ways of thinking about how to be a mother, and a person. - Claire Dederer, Author of the national bestsellers Monsters: A Fan’s Dilemma and Poser: My Life In Twenty-Three Yoga Poses“Some of us just know: we want a child, or we don't. But for most of us, it's not so clear-cut: generations of genetics tangled with deeply individual bodies, dreams, and fears. Ackerman gives us the complexity of motherhood in all its devastating and devastatingly beautiful truth, layering her own harrowing story with laser-focused research and a chorus of mothers from literature and pop culture, all saying: you are not alone. You never have been. – Megan Stielstra, the author of The Wrong Way to Save Your LifeAbout Ruthie AckermanRuthie began her writing career with a promise: to shine a light on the people, places, and ideas that are too often ignored. After a stint at the New York Times and a few years reporting on the economy for Forbes, she was awarded journalism fellowships to war-torn Liberia and Lebanon to showcase young people in both countries who were rebuilding their lives out of the ashes of destruction—and finding the resilience to push forward. In the decade since, she has profiled game-changing entrepreneurs and social activists and written extensively about the professional and financial advancement of women. Ruthie wrote a piece for the New York Times Modern Love column about her own failed egg freezing, “Don’t Put All Your (Frozen) Eggs in One Basket,” which became the launching point for her upcoming memoir and shifted her focus from traditional reporting to personal stories. She started Ignite Writers Collective in 2019 to work with other writers at all stages of their careers, sharing her insights from years as an editor and writer. Her clients have gotten book deals, published essays, and found the bravery to share their stories with the world. Ruthie’s writing has been published in Vogue, Glamour, O Magazine, The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Salon, Slate, Newsweek, and more. Most recently, she was the Deputy Editor at ForbesWomen. She has a Master's in Journalism from NYU and lives in Brooklyn with her husband and their daughter. About Christie TateChristie is the author of the New York Times bestseller Group, which was a Reese’s Book Club selection and has been translated into 19 languages. She is also the author of B.F.F.-- A Memoir of Friendship Lost & Found. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, and elsewhere. Her essays have been nominated for Puschcart Prizes, and Kiese Laymon selected her essay, Promised Lands, as the winner of the New Ohio Review’s 2019 nonfiction contest. She writes about addiction, eating disorders, friendship, alienation, recovery, and her Grandma’s farm in Forreston, Texas. She grew up in Dallas and now lives in Chicago with her family. She has finally stopped telling people that she graduated first in her law school class. Please don’t hate her because she has no pets. Information Source: Sarah Gormley Gallery | eventbrite

MindfulNEXT: The "Why" of Worry and How to Fix It | Columbus Karma Thegsum Chöling

May 1, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Columbus
Cultural Experiences
The Mindfulness field is continually evolving with new research and types of practices being studied. MindfulNEXT examines the latest research in the field, taking attendees through both the science and techniques, while also discussing what these new findings might mean for both researchers and mindfulness practitioners. This year, our topic is Worry. Trouble concentrating ? Forgetting whether you ate lunch? This year mindfulness researcher Dr. Julie Brefczynski-Lewis will discuss new findings about “worry” and research related to mindfulness’ effects on worry and anxiety, including the brain mechanisms of these processes. Find out how the brain has two distinct systems – one for fear of a present danger and one for assessing (and worrying about!) a potential threat. The latter, worry, sets up a "threat simulation system" that hijacks the brain’s attention and working memory systems, often to the exclusion of other needed tasks. Research has shown that these processes are all about our concept of self, which meditation practice knows a thing or two about. We’re sure to have an interesting discussion as well as guided versions of practical exercises that can center your mental stability and help free up your brain for creative approaches to life’s troubles (worry is expensive to the brain, mindfulness meditation reduces brain drain). Dr. Julie Brefczynski-Lewis will describe her own research at the University of West Virginia as well as teach exercises now being studied as the "next frontier" in Mindfulness research. TICKETS for this COSI Science Festival event will be available starting Thursday March 27 through 7PM on Thursday May 4. Tickets are free! ABOUT DR. JULIE : Dr. Julie Brefczynski-Lewis is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at West Virginia University. She received her PhD in Cell Biology, Neurobiology, and Anatomy from the Medical College of Wisconsin. Brefczynski-Lewis has been practicing mindfulness for more than 20 years and researching its effects for the past decade. ABOUT LAMA KATHY: A student of buddhism since meeting Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche in 1977, Lama Kathy participated in the first 3-Year Retreat conducted by Khenpo Rinpoche in the United States. Since graduating from retreat in 1996, Lama Kathy has served as the Resident Teacher of the Columbus KTC. Information Source: Columbus Karma Thegsum Chöling | eventbrite
