Sing, Play, Act! Becoming a Musical Improviser Abridged | Short North Stage
Jun 14, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Columbus
About
The best musical improvisers aren't always the best singers, nor do they always craft the cleverest lyrics or the best rhymes. Instead, they have the right balance of heart, conviction and simplicity and have a real love for great characters and stories. In this abridged version of her popular 3-hour master class, Sarah will walk participants through the basics of becoming a musical improviser, including how to make up melodies and lyrics on the spot.
This course is fast-paced and highly interactive. Whether you're new to musical improv or a veteran, you'll leave with the confidence to "make your own kind of music". Basic knowledge of music is also a bonus, but not required. Come ready to dive right in and sing!
Instructor
Sarah J Storer brings over twenty years of improv experience to the classroom. She originally studied with Cinublue Productions and received further instruction from the legendary Chris Lane and MCTD's Jeff Gage. As the former Artistic Director and founding member of The Hashtag Comedy Company in Columbus, OH, Sarah created TBD: the Improvised Musical in 2015 and Ladies Who Lounge: an Improvised Musical Lounge Act in 2019. She earned a diploma in piano performance in high school, and is a singer and songwriter with three original one-woman shows that debuted in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Sarah's goal in teaching is to help students discover "lightbulb moments" and gain confidence on stage through understanding and embracing their unique voice.

KING ARTS COMPLEX is Gramercy’s Community Partner for this program.
An arrest for cocaine possession on the last day of a sweltering New York summer leaves Smith, a queer Black Stanford graduate, in a state of turmoil. Pulled into the court system and mandated treatment, he finds himself in an absurd but dangerous situation: his class protects him, but his race does not.
It’s just weeks after the death of his beloved roommate Elle, the daughter of a famous soul singer, and he’s still reeling from the tabloid spectacle—as well as lingering questions around how well he really knew his closest friend. He flees to his hometown of Atlanta, only to buckle under the weight of expectations from his family of doctors and lawyers and their history in America. But when Smith returns to New York, it’s not long before he begins to lose himself to his old life—drawn back into the city’s underworld, where his search for answers may end up costing him his freedom and his future.
Smith goes on a dizzying journey through the nightlife circuit, anonymous recovery rooms, Atlanta’s Black society set, police investigations and courtroom dramas, and a circle of friends coming of age in a new era.
