Etching #2 - Aquatint & Sugarlift | Australian Print Workshop
Jul 10–Jul 11, 2025 (UTC+10)
Vic
This course will enable participants to explore intaglio printmaking through the creation of tonal imagery. Participants will learn how to draw directly onto the copper plate to create painterly marks and will develop the skills to use aquatint, sugarlift and open bite techniques. These techniques are perfect for artists who enjoy the freedom of using a brush. Experimenting with ways of drawing and printing the plates to produce rich, tonal images, this course is a great way to build on the skills acquired in Etching #1 (although this is not a prerequisite to enrolment in Etching #2) – and will cover plate preparation, mark making with sugarlift and the application of aquatint, along with paper preparation, registration techniques and the correct use of an etching press to print a limited edition of fine art prints. Tutor: Martin King Dates: Thursday 10 and Friday 11 July 2025 (10am - 4pm each day)

STILL | TW Explosives Factory
Jul 10, 2025 (UTC+10)
Vic
Victorian Theatre Company presents Still: Late Works by Samuel Beckett, the latest artistic collaboration between Melbourne theatre greats Richard Murphet and Robert Meldrum. After the sell-out season of Worstward Ho (Australian Premiere), powerhouse duo Richard Murphet and Robert Meldrum return with a new dramatisation of rarely presented Beckett texts; six short works written towards the end of his life. ‘A man alone in a hut, in the valley, on the backroads, somewhere between the town and the outback, between the sky and the dazzling land. Six short, unpredictable episodes on his journey along the blurred boundary between day and night, between living and dying, out of a conscious life into that threshold, alternately terrifying, revelatory, awesome, prior to the final shutdown.’ Murphet and Meldrum explain. ‘These are joyously, shockingly real vignettes, filled not with philosophical thought on Life or Death, but on the mere ordinariness of existence: a table, a wicker chair, a window, a beech tree, an old hat, the sound of nightingales, a handful of yellow flowers. It has been our delight over the past 12 months to find ways of bringing them alive for a modern audience.’ These pieces attempt to present the experience of dying - not traumatically, but carefully and irreversibly. The chance to experience these rare Beckett pieces live on stage is a must for Beckett and theatre lovers alike.

Six short pieces written in the last decade of Beckett’s life. Attempting to write the experience of dying - not traumatically, but carefully and irreversibly. They are precise yet elusive approaches to the Event: the shock, the patience, the regret, the loneliness, the persistence, the threshold and the absence. The haunting language evokes the unsolved mystery of life’s ending without attempting to solve it. Our task in staging these 6 masterworks is to give a bodied form to their haunting, through performance, space, lighting and sound. We will not over-embellish. We will go boldly to the feeling heart of matter.

Master Copy Oil Painting Workshop | Spring Gully
Jul 12–Jul 14, 2025 (UTC+10)
Vic
Come and paint Frank Cadogan Cowper RA (1877 - 1958) Vanity (1907) across 3 days with Archibald Prize finalist Alanah Ellen Brand. Alanah will teach participants the fundamentals of portraiture, oil paint and colour theory as they recreate Cowper's famous painting. This workshop is perfect for beginners and those with some painting experience. The workshop hours are 9am-5pm Saturday to Monday at Alanah’s private residence/studio. You can also come for the first two days for the reduced price of $600 by using the discount code 2DAYMASTERCOPY at the checkout. Upon payment participants will be emailed a workshop booklet which will provide the studio/residence address, an itinerary for the 3-days and extra information about the workshop. All of your materials are included in the price of the workshop. This includes brushes, oil paint, medium, an easel and glass pallet to use for the duration of the workshop and a canvas to paint on that you can take home with you after the workshop. The workshop is limited to 7 participants to ensure individual support. To allow ample time to paint Alanah will prepare the surface for you ahead of time with an outline/drawing of Cowper's famous painting. Alanah will also place a transparent mid-tone wash over the top of this drawing. This creates a base for you to work from and will help you to complete your painting in one layer over the course of the 3-day workshop. Alanah will also print a high-quality image of this painting for you to work from on the day. The residence/studio has a fridge and kitchen amenities such as a kettle, microwave and sandwich press that may be used by participants. Alanah will book a table at Spring Gully Café for Lunch, from 12.30 – 1.30pm each day, this is optional to attend. While your workshop materials are supplied, lunch at the cafe will be at your own cost. You are most welcome to bring your own lunch and eat at Alanah's residence/studio. There will also be an artist dinner on Saturday night. This is to provide all participants with the opportunity to get to know each other in a more casual environment. This is also optional to attend and the dinner will be at your own cost. This event is non-refundable. If you cannot attend the workshop due to illness or an emergency Alanah will place the money towards a future workshop. Please also note that the original painting is on panel and 571 mm x 381 mm x 18 mm in size, Alanah will crop the image to fit a 16x20'' (40.7cm x 50.9cm) canvas, to assist us in completing this painting over the course of the 3 days.
