Have an unforgettable morning at Edinburgh Zoo learning how to take better photographs of stunning animals and nature and understanding how to get the most out of your camera. These photo experience days have evolved from those we have successfully staged for adults over many years and provide an opportunity for younger photographers to take advantage and develop their skills further. Edinburgh Zoo provides fantastic opportunities for photographing animals and a selection of these have been chosen upon which to test and demonstrate a range of techniques on the day. With a small group size, and the opportunity to offer one-to-one tuition, we are confident of helping you improve your photography, whatever your level of expertise. Please note that this workshop is for participants ages 11-15 years. We are privileged that renowned professional photographer Laurie Campbell will be running the workshops. Laurie was actually a keeper at Edinburgh Zoo before embarking on a highly successful thirty year career as a nature photographer and has now returned as the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland's (RZSS) nature photographer in residence. He has over thirty five years’ experience in leading photographic workshops, has illustrated and authored several books including the bestselling ‘RSPB Guide to Bird & Nature Photography’; and has won twenty-three awards in the prestigious BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition. We aim to include meerkats, red pandas, rhinos and pygmy hippos. Please note, that we are unable to guarantee any specific animals on the day due to animal welfare issues. If any animals are off-show, we will replace this part of the day with an equivalent opportunity. Can I bring anyone with me when I’m doing my experience? Participants must be accompanied by a spectating guardian or adult (maximum one per child). Both the participant and accompanying adult's entry is included within the workshop voucher. After the workshop you are then able to go and explore the rest of the zoo for the afternoon. What are my transport/parking options getting to the event? Information regarding travel by car and public transport can be found online here . Where can I contact the organiser with any questions? For further information regarding our Photography Workshops please email events@rzss.org.uk How many people can be booked in for an experience? No, the workshop ticket includes entry for the day for the participant and the accompanying adult. Are there any age restrictions? Participants must be aged 11-15 years of age to participate with one accompanying adult present throughout the Workshop. What's included in the price of the workshop? Edinburgh
Cultural Experiences
Antibiotics - one of humanity’s greatest achievements, but invented by microbes. Join biologist and author, Liam Shaw , on Thursday 11th September at 7pm , as he chats about his new epic narrative of scientific discovery, Dangerous Miracle . Since their advent, antibiotics have saved millions of lives, marking one of the greatest medical advances in our history. Dangerous Miracle weaves together the grand arc of the evolution of antibiotics over millions of years with a history of the past century: first as we mined the earth for naturally occurring antibiotic molecules, then as we learned to synthesise our own. But like fossil fuels, antibiotics are a finite resource which we’ve regarded as a cheap, everlasting fuel. They are unlike other drugs: every time we use them we increase the possibility of antibiotic resistance emerging, risking their future effectiveness. If we want antibiotics to have a future, we need to prepare to adapt. And fast. Rich with pioneering characters, great breakthroughs and grave risks, Dangerous Miracle is a grand drama of science, history and politics. It is a revelatory account of of the miraculous history and uncertain future of antibiotics from a gifted writer. - Doors: 6.30pm, event starts: 7pm, please arrive early to secure a good seat. PAIN 133 | Newbarns Brewery and Taproom

Sep 13, 2025 (UTC+1)
Edinburgh
Cultural Experiences
Origin Pain is an annual ultramarathon around Edinburgh which raises awareness and funds for the mental health crisis within one of society’s most vulnerable demographic, 16 – 18 year olds. After losing his best friend to suicide during his late teens, Smls founder Danny Allan, spent years searching for a way to leave a legacy for his friend, Charlie. This legacy is PAIN – an ultramarathon which takes on three loops covering the entirety of Edinburgh. The first two loops total 100km, while the final loop increases by 1km each year, to reflect the age which Charlie would have been. The last 33km are dedicated to Charlie but the first 100km are for everyone else struggling with their mental battle. Loop 3, Charlie’s loop is a run where the community are encouraged to join in, a run which has been tackled in Edinburgh, Melbourne, and Capetown on the same day over the last two years. Since its inception in 2023, PAIN has raised over £12,000. For the second year the funds raised will go to Smls' new pathway which provides free therapy sessions for 16 – 18 year olds within Edinburgh who are currently stuck on waiting lists. PAIN 131, PAIN 132, and now PAIN 133. PAIN 133 14.09.2025. We’re back. Similar to last year, PAIN 133 will be a team relay. However, this year the event is open to all and there’s no need to be part of a run club to enter. Each team needs to have three runners – one per loop – who are keen to compete in, and take on, a unique challenge while raising funds for a great cause. Team entry is £150 per group of three which goes directly towards free mental health therapy for 16 - 18 year olds. The day will start and end at Newbarns Taproom – where the community will come together for an afterparty to celebrate the day and enjoy some local food and drink, more to follow. Entries will be capped to ensure we can create a smooth and enjoyable experience for athletes. The Loops Right, time for some details. Here’s the structure of the day: Loop 1 [52 KM] : Our first runners kick-off at 07:15 as one group – with runners expected to stick together at a group pace of ~ 5:40min/km. At 32km, runners will hit their aid station. At this stage, if people fancy a bit of light hearted competition, then athletes are welcomed to run whatever pace they like back to the meet point. Loop 2 [48 KM] : Our second runners start at 07:30. As above, the group will stick together at a pace of 5:40min/km before they reach their aid station at 30km. Thereafter, athletes can pick up (or slow down!) the pace as they wish. Charlies Loop [33km] : Charlie’s loop can be started by the third team runner as soon as both runners 1 and 2 are back to the start. There’s no pace restriction on Charlie’s Loop. PAIN 133 is not a race. That said, we won’t deprive those who want it a bit of light hearted competition. Information Source: Smalls | eventbrite

Transformation: Changing Lives through Befriending | Craiglockhart Parish Church

Sep 20, 2025 (UTC+1)
Edinburgh
Cultural Experiences
Bethany Christian Trust and Edinburgh City Mission are delighted to be joined by Friends International to organise our third annual Christian Befriending Conference on Saturday 20th September in Craiglockhart Parish Church. Increasing numbers of people are finding themselves lonely; older people and newcomers to our city struggle to make meaningful connections with others and ironically, people leaving homelessness can lose the community they found on the streets. Where is the church in all this? Befriending services provide one way for the church to create community for those who find themselves on the margins, and to discover that transformation is a two-way process. As we befriend, we learn and grow in unexpected ways. Just as we are being transformed by a relational God, lives around us can be changed through relationship and connection. A weekly home visit or regular outing to a cafe can have an eternal impact. If you are already an experienced Befriender, be inspired by stories of transformation, and connect with a wider network of Befrienders here in Edinburgh. And if you have never heard of Befriending, or if you are not yet involved, come along and find out how it is different from other kinds of friendship, and how you can join in! Mabon Celebration: Creative Workshop for the Autumn Equinox Mabon is a Celtic celebration that aligns with the Autumn Equinox, marking the shift toward the darker half of the year. It is a time to honour balance, harmony, and the changing seasons. This workshop offers a welcoming space for individuals to connect, reflect, and embrace the energy of this transitional time. Overview This workshop provides a space to reflect on the personal significance of seasonal change and to use mandala-style artwork to portray this journey. It will be structured into four parts, beginning with a meditation and concluding with a connection circle. Below is an outline of the morning’s structure. Workshop Structure The workshop will begin with a welcoming circle. Participants will receive information about the facilities and an overview of the morning’s activities. There will also be an opportunity to check in and connect with the group. While we start together, this space is an invitation for personal reflection. The hope is for this space to allow the opportunity for individual self-expression through a creative medium. The workshop will flow through four main stages: Meditation: You will be guided through a meditation to inspire the creative process and begin visualizing your ‘sacred ciorcal’. Orchestrating your idea: After the meditation, you will be invited to select the medium that best suits your vision. A variety of materials, including paints, black ink pens, pencils, and natural elements (such as leaves and rocks), will be available. If you regularly work with a particular medium, you are welcome to bring your own materials. Card will be provided as a canvas. Creative Expression: The core of the workshop will focus on bringing your vision to life. You will fill your ‘sacred ciorcal’ with images, words, or symbols that hold personal meaning. Intentional music will be played to support the creative flow. Closing connection circle: Finally, we will reconnect in a closing circle. There will be an invitation for people to share their creative process and their ‘sacred ciorcals’ if they feel comfortable. How to attend Book your spot here: Please book in advance, this group will be limited to 12 people. Suggested Donation: £5-£15 About Donations: Participation in our community-led events is on a voluntary ‘by donation’ basis. This means that nobody is expected to make a payment if they cannot afford to do so. Any donations received will be shared between the Centre and the facilitator, helping to make the events’ programme sustainable as well as to provide some reciprocity towards community facilitators’ time and skills offered. Where a “suggested donation” is listed, this is just an indication of what the event might cost if it was ticketed. This is an invitation to practice ‘Dana’ (generosity) – please pay only what you can afford to attend. Information Source: eventbrite

Join us for this bite sized lunch time talk exploring the history of medicine. In 1941, Jack Ennis, Captain and pathologist in the Indian Medical Service, was sent ‘up-country’ in Malaya to work at a remote hospital. As the Japanese invaded, he wrote daily in his small pocket-size diary and recorded the retreat to Singapore, captivity and internment by the Japanese, and finally, in 1945, the end of the war in the Far East. Throughout his time in captivity, Jack continued his work as a pathologist. His diaries provide a unique description of the danger, difficulties and deprivation as a prisoner of war. In this talk Jackie Sutherland, his daughter, will draw on her late father’s diaries and mementos to illustrate aspects of his life in internment - three and a half years that included daily struggles, ingenuity, great friendships, humour and tragedy Age Guidance: 16+ Important Refund Information: Please note that included in your ticket prices is a 96p booking charge which is non-refundable. This is part of Eventbrite terms and conditions and is not at the discression of Surgeons Hall Museums. Content Warning: Our collections contain human remains as well as representations of anatomy, injury, and disease that some may find upsetting .
