FILM: The Stimming Pool / A Brief History of Circles including director Q&A | Full of Noises
Nov 17, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Barrow-in-Furness
We are showing two films on Sunday 17 November made by autistic filmmakers. Also take part in a Q&A with co-director Georgia Bradburn who worked on both features. The screening is in collaboration with Autus Cumbria. All ticket sales will be donated to Autus to support their services. Autus supports autistic children and adults by offering social opportunities, support, training and advocacy. Films: The Stimming Pool (1hr 10 mins) The Stimming Pool is an experimental and sometimes magical hybrid film whose drifting form is built around the concept of an autistic camera. The curiosity of this camera discovers a relay of subjects who stray through the world, revealing environments often hostile to autistic experience - such as a hectic workplace and a crowded pub - and quiet spaces that offer respite from them. Sometimes the camera wanders off without any guide, finding an ancient woodland, an abandoned testing centre, even a fragment from an animated zombie film set in the American civil war… Each of the characters exists in a separate world nested inside one other and often jumping up and down levels. But gradually we come to realise they have common experiences. Some are concealing their autism and dealing with the resulting feelings of isolation, while others thrive in the communities and support structures around them. All, however, have a shared objective: to find a place where they are free to move and stim, uninhibited by the tests and restrictions of normative society. This secret place is the Stimming Pool… Directors: Georgia Bradburn, Robin Elliot-Knowles, Benjamin Brown, Sam Chown Ahern, Lucy Walker, Steven Eastwood. A Brief History of Circles (11 mins) An experimental video essay which uses circles and waves to explore neurodivergent experience. Filmmaker: Georgia Bradburn Timings: Sunday 17 November. 2pm doors. 2:30pm films start. Access information for the screening: If you have any access requirements please email sophie@fonfestival.org Relaxed screening: This event will run as a relaxed screening which means that you are free to get up and leave to go to the quiet space / have a break / stim / do anything else that makes you feel comfortable. Mirrors is a witness to unprecedented events as they unfolded on this singular isle over seven extraordinary years. From volatile public demonstrations to intimate domestic scenes, the film reveals the experience and emotions of living in England, explored through the lives of total strangers, family, and friends. Shot exclusively on 16mm film, Mirrors is both lucid diary and poetic map - a meditation on human resilience, a journey across an island. - Paul Daly. I, Dismantled A series of five domestic vignettes that draw from the artist’s experiences and memories. Each individual, moving portrait is a sensitive and at times surreal exploration that walks a fine line between documentary truth and poetic interpretation.
Each 100ft roll of film was undone, shaken and tossed in the artist’s living space, infusing the 16mm film emulsion with hair, sweat and skin. - Paul Daly. Concert: Pedro Bosch, Boy Lucid, Harvey Young - Independent Venue Week | Full of Noises
Feb 1, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Barrow-in-Furness
Full of Noises is delighted to welcome three exceptional sound artists who have all graduated from London College of Communication. The concert takes place during Independent Venue Week on Saturday 1 February. Across the weekend people can also experience a six-speaker sound installation by Harvey Young which explores the diffusion of dialects as a function of topography. Doors 7pm - concert starts 7.30pm. Pedro Bosch Pedro Bosch is a London-based sound artist and audio engineer originally from Mexico City. His artistic practice centers around live performance, driven by a deep fascination with the raw and transformative power of live sound. Pedro’s work delves into the transgressive qualities of sound, exploring the intersection of beauty and horror. Through his performances, he seeks to uncover the unsettling yet compelling aspects of sonic experiences, embracing discomfort while searching for an almost sedative quality in his auditory creations. His art evokes a complex spectrum of emotions, drawing listeners into a space where disturbance and tranquility coexist, challenging conventional notions of sonic aesthetics. Boy Lucid Boy Lucid is a composer, interweaving field recordings with melodic instrumentals, unknown voices and song, into a music made from connections, entanglement and longing. They will use a set up of melodica, contact microphone, laptop and voice for this performance. From rural Ireland and based in London, Boy Lucid is part of the collective Roca, organising outdoor listening events in public parks across the city when it's warm. Harvey Young Harvey Young is a composer, sound artist and writer whose practice centres on temporality, linguistics and psychogeography. He uses extended vocal techniques, field recordings and spatialisation to create acousmatic and electroacoustic works. He is presenting an as-yet-untitled six speaker installation exploring the diffusion of dialects as a function of topography. The piece is inspired by linguist James Burridge’s paper ‘Unifying models of dialect spread and extinction using surface tension dynamics’. Harvey’s compositions have appeared in Vogue, ResonanceExtra and various London venues and galleries.

Concert: Rowland Hill - Set You Free: A Eurotrance Deep Listening Event | Full of Noises
Apr 18, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Barrow-in-Furness
Set You Free: A Eurotrance Deep Listening Event Friday 18 April 7pm for show start at 7.30pm Solo performance, 1hr approx. This is a standing event with some seats. Rowland Hill presents a DJ’d lecture which explores her conflicted relationship with 1990s Eurotrance music and its wider political and cultural legacies. Using deep listening techniques, theatrical effects and a personal archive of audio-visual ephemera, Rowland invites you to reencounter Eurotrance’s disquieting rhetoric of utopia and disaster. This presentation draws on philosophies of perception that purport to conjure timescales beyond conventional comprehension, including Byzantine iconography — believed to open a direct channel of communication with the divine — and listening practices developed by avant-garde composer Pauline Oliveros. The event will be followed by a specially curated Eurotrance disco. Saturday 19th + Sunday 20th Fluchtpunkt (vanishing point, place of refuge) FREE ENTRY - just drop-in. Light and sound installation, 15 mins approx, looped Across the Easter weekend Rowland Hill will transform the gallery into an immersive and ambiguous attraction with a special adaption of her light and sound installation Fluchtpunkt (vanishing point, place of refuge). The work combines a suspenseful choreography of animated stagecraft with an intense, ASMR inducing audio landscape of sampled voices, alienated club beats and extreme weather effects—a recurring metaphor in 90s dance music for conflict and resolution. Rowland Hill Rowland Hill is a Manchester-based artist working across the visual and performing arts. Her work often explores the history of entertainment and its use of dark glamour, ritualism, enacted drama and heightened emotional states. She uses stagecraft, choreography, found media and the presence of audiences to create intimate, beguiling and at times unsettling events and environments. https://rowland-hill.com Instagram: @row.land.hill Top image: Rowland photo by Jules Lister Bottom image: Fluchtpunkt installation view Logical Song at Castlefield Gallery 2024 copyright Jules Lister.

About
White Horses
Produced through a series of visits to lifeboat stations and seaside towns around the coastline,
White Horses
explores the sea’s innate duality as a place of wonder and peril, and the myriad roles it plays for coastal communities.
This travelling work, housed within a unique, custom-made sculptural tent will be installed by the sea, immersing audiences in the stories of RNLI crew and local people from around our coastline.
Within this structure,
White Horses
will be screened using 16mm projection
presenting a multifaceted portrait of the sea and the nation’s coastal towns, bringing together six diverse locations, each linked by the lifeboat station at the centre of their community.
In Barrow-in-Furness,
White Horses
will be accompanied by two local projects, John Hall’s
Tin Ships
– a fleet of tin ships, designed and crafted using recycled materials by pupils at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School – and Maddi Nicholson’s
Above and Beyond
– featuring placards celebrating Peggy Braithwaite, the UK’s first female principal lighthouse keeper. In memory of Peggy, an unsung local heroine, Barrow’s community of knitters will also create woollen hats to celebrate her legacy. Art Gene will sell these to raise money for the RNLI.
Sea Like a Mirror
is a partnership project led by Cement Fields, with Art Gene, Norfolk & Norwich Festival, North East Lincolnshire Council & East Marsh United, and Super Culture. Delivered in collaboration with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and supported with public funding from Arts Council England.

Concert: Maggie Nicols & Dan Johnson / Jilly Jarman & Geoff Bartholomew | Full of Noises
May 27, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Barrow-in-Furness
M
aggie Nicols & Dan Johnson
Tuesday 27 May 2025, 7pm
"
From the very first sounds we made, the connection was profound and
the music came through us almost effortlessly. It just keeps getting
better...”
- Maggie Nicols
The legendary Maggie Nicols arrives at Piel View House with Dan Johnson.
The two improvisers come from different generations yet share a fearless approach to collaboration based in radical communality and deep-listening.
Maggie's voice, piano and tapdance meet Dan's gong drones and percussive patter with profound results.
The duo met for the first time on stage at St Georges in Bristol and the formation spawned a live recording '
Contact'
released on 16 May 2025
available HERE.
Also on the bill - jazz duo
Jilly Jarman & Geoff Bartholomew.
Maggie Nicols
Maggie Nicols is a legendary Scottish vocalist, dancer, and performer. Since the 1960s she has been a key figure in the free improv scene, including as part of John Steven’s Spontaneous Music Ensemble which she joined in 1968, Keith Tippett's fifty piece band Centipede (along with Julie Tippetts, Zoot Money, Phil Minton, RobertWyatt, Dudu Pukwana and Alan Skidmore), and as a founder of the Feminist Improvising Group with Lindsay Cooper and influential trio Les Diaboliques with Irene Schweizer and Joelle Leandre, along with countless other groups and collaborations around the world. A committed feminist, much of her work has sought to amplify women in improvised music, dancing and other creative arts, not least through running workshops such as those at Oval House Theatre in the 1970s, and Contradictions, a women's workshop performance group that began in 1980.
Dan Johnson
Dan Johnson is a percussionist working in improvised sound and expanded composition. Undermining conventional notions of drumming, his experimental work is manifested across a wide range of projects; from eight-hour solo improvisations responding to instructions provided by the audience, to invite-only performances in rail tunnels, lifts and public toilets, to non-hierarchical group improvisation project Ecstatic Drum Beats. Running through this multifaceted output are consistent concerns with balancing chance and control, exposing performer-audience relationships, and the demands of discipline and physical endurance. Deeply rooted in Bristol’s DIY scene, where among his innumerable collaborations he was a mainstay of Dali de Saint Paul’s sprawling power-improv vehicle EP/64, Dan has brought the same spirit of openness to live and recorded work with artists like Moor Mother, Ximena Alarcon, Valentina Magaletti, Rattle, Yama Warashi, GNOD and Surgeon.
