Bikes and helmets are available to borrow or you can bring your own. All riders must wear a helmet to take part in the sessions. Please ensure that children are wearing suitable shoes and clothing for cycling and the weather conditions. The sessions will continue in wet weather and will only be cancelled if a weather warning is in place (e.g storm), all participants will be contacted in advance if this is the case. Where possible please remove any stabilisers from your child's bike before attending. This session will take place on the main cycle track. This course is a three day event covering 11 topics in total, this informal workshop makes use of the superb practical exhibits available in the Centre to provide attendees with a level of knowledge which guarantees their projects will go more smoothly. Day 1 (Presented by Lucy Nylander (CLPM) and guest presenter Tom McSherry (Buildstore) Budgeting & Finance This first session is dedicated to methods of raising finance and the importance of setting a budget and controlling costs throughout the project. Finding & Evaluating Land Finding a building plot is never easy, but there are ways and means to find that elusive dream plot. Design & Specification This session will look at how to get the best design for your dream home. Building Systems & Construction Methods We’ll take you on a comprehensive tour of the build process, covering everything from clearing and setting up your site, laying the foundations and options for building the superstructure and roof. Day 2 Planning Permission & Permitted Development Our Planning expert will explain the intricacies of the planning process and how you can optimise your chances of getting approval for your dream home. Building Regulations We’ll explain about building control procedures and the importance of building regulations. Trades, Contracts & Tendering We’ll discuss the best way to find tradesmen, the trades you’ll be hiring, when you’ll need them and what they do. Project Management & Site Set Up Starting with the basic principles of managing the people involved in your build, through to budgets, basic contracting techniques, buying materials and site management. Day 3 Eco Fundamentals Our eco expert Rob Bohm, shows you how to lessen the impact your project could have on the environment; he looks at the incentives available and drivers for using various eco technologies, comparative fuel costs and helps you understand how to calculate the payback terms. He’ll also consider the latest legislative requirements of Passivhaus, SAP ratings, and other potential incentives. Together with Tabla is a performance showcase event with tabla students from Swindon & Gloucestershire and their teacher, percussionist Jon Sterckx. Tabla is the main percussion instrument played in North Indian classical music & the most popular percussion instrument of the Indian Subcontinent. Tabla is also growing in popularity globally. The amazing range of tones, complex rhythmic patterns and exciting rhythmic compositions of the tabla repertoire make for an enjoyable and exciting performance event. This year will be the sixth year that the Together with Tabla event has been running. (2020 & 2021 were online due to the pandemic. 2022, 2023 & 2024 were held in person at The Platform). We start by setting you up with your bike , checking it, making sure it is set up right for you and the principles of making adjustments to suit you. We will also go through essentials to carry with you on a ride. Then we tackle Body position . Where you put your body in relation to your bike influences so many things, but most fundamentally, where your bike goes. Nailing this opens up so many more possibilities in your riding. From there we work on how to use your body position for: cornering ascending descending small obstacles For July we are offering 40% off our normal rate, giving you the 2 hour course for £30 .
