## Thousand-year-old footsteps in the cracks of bricks: a time-space roaming on the Great Wall

In Badaling under the scorching sun, a gray-brown ridge winds above the peaks. My fingers stroked the mottled bricks of the battlements and suddenly touched several deep dents - were they scars from arrows hitting or scratches from the scabbards of soldiers guarding the border? This giant installation, which took two thousand years to build, is now engraving the code of history into my palm.

### 1. Time folds on the stone steps
Each step is like an opened bamboo slip, and the surface of the bluestone is covered with fine cracks. On the bricks fired in the Ming Dynasty, the inscription &quot;Constructed in Dezhou in the fifth year of Wanli&quot; is clearly visible, and these &quot;QR codes&quot; from six hundred years ago can still scan the fingerprints of craftsmen. In the collapsed enemy tower, the rammed earth layer is as clear as a thousand-layer cake, and the hustle and bustle of the golden swords and iron horses is solidified in every grain of sand. Archaeologists have found arrowheads from the Yuan Dynasty in the arrow holes, and meteorologists have read the cold wave of the Little Ice Age from the dust of the beacon tower.

The observation holes on the parapet walls form a natural frame, sometimes the vast clouds of the northern frontier, sometimes the bright lights of the imperial capital. The soldiers once witnessed the Xiongnu&#39;s smoke and the Khitan&#39;s flags here, and now the mobile phone screens of tourists flicker like stars here. Time and space are folded here, and the sound of the Xiongnu Khan&#39;s horse hooves and the engine sound of the sightseeing bus resonate in the same valley.

### 2. The eternal paradox of brick and stone construction
On the arch dome of Juyongguan, layers of wedge-shaped bricks and stones bite into a perfect mechanical balance. This dry-laying method without mortar has allowed the city wall to stand firm in countless earthquakes. But what is stronger than bricks and stones is the determination of the builders to fight against time with their flesh and blood. Legend has it that each brick is mixed with the ashes of the border guards, who still guard the border in the form of calcification after death.

The numbers in the Great Wall Museum are dizzying: a total length of 210,000 kilometers, 300 million cubic meters of building materials, enough to circle the earth&#39;s equator 50 times. But what is more shocking is the life measurement of those nameless people: the dead bodies of civilians under the wall, the stone carriers who fell off the cliff and died, and the garrison soldiers who froze on the sentry post. Their names have long been weathered, but they have forever built the tragic and heroic struggle of mankind against nothingness into the wall.

### 3. Touch the rings of civilization on the ridge
The Simatai Great Wall in the twilight is like a swimming dragon, and the residual shadows of the enemy towers are lit up one after another in the twilight. The moonlight shines on the wild Great Wall section of the Jiankou Great Wall, and the collapsed wall fits perfectly with the folds of the ridge. This kind of architectural wisdom of harmony between man and nature has made the Great Wall transcend a simple military project and become a philosophical scroll written on the earth. Gu Yanwu said that &quot;the mountains and rivers will be there forever&quot;, and now I know how much resilience of civilization is deposited in this word &quot;there&quot;.

In the farmyard at the foot of the wild Great Wall, an old farmer built a pigpen with Great Wall bricks. This absurd transformation of material properties is like the black humor of history itself. When my hiking pole knocked on the Ming Dynasty stone steps, the startled mountain sparrows fluttered their wings and flew over the ruins of the Northern Qi city wall - the Great Wall relics of different dynasties met here, recording the rise and fall of civilization like tree rings.

When going down the mountain, the mountain wind blew up a few poplar leaves and stuck them on the moss of the city wall. Did the soldiers two thousand years ago also see such autumn colors?
