Relais & Chateaux Weeshuis Gouda

The only hotel so to speak in Gouda proper, and an absolutely charming Relais & Châteaux at that (the other one is at the edge of the old town, and is part of a 3-and-a-half giant American brand). Modern, quirky rooms in an old structure. Unobtrusive, first-class service. The buffet breakfast, while not international, is fabulous.

Located in a perfect area to walk all the old town of Gouda. R & C Weeshuis Gouda is a recently renovated orphanage from the 17th century (?) and beautifully done! We stayed in room 44 (on the 3rd floor), not sure why the rooms are numbered in this fashion but they are (see photo of elevator). Room was a junior suite with good space and ONE window that opened for fresh air (otherwise the air was stale). Breakfast was fantastic, staff was very helpful and LIZZ (one star Michelin restaurant) was top notch for a great lunch. Overall a 5 star stay. Thanks!

I think this is the best place to stay in Gouda, very cozy hotel most especially during Christmas time. Its in the center just behind the cathedral and the cheese shop, staff were very friendly and helpful, and the room was spacious and very clean. It has a very comfortable bed. Very good breakfast too!

Was a very cosy and nice hotel, we just booked our second stay for christmas. Very friendly staff, great vibe and good servoice incl food and very easy tjek in.

It’s a fantastic hotel. The rooms are comfortable and a bit quirky given that it’s a very old building. Some rooms have a staircase separating the living and sleeping areas. Location is perfect with a short walk to the market and many restaurants with terraces and of course shops. I only had breakfast and it’s very good. The staff is super friendly.

Stay here if you want to be surrounded by rich history and close by to shopping and restaurants. The rooms are great, the staff will make you feel right at home and the breakfast is delicious! If you are visiting Gouda, there is no better place to stay.

Excellent communication - we had issues with our flight & arrived a day late and the hotel was extremely helpful and reassuring of being able to check in late and what to do if after reception hours. Super hotrl with freat staff

The hotel is wonderful. Different from aything weve been to before. The decor is amazing. I wanted to bring the carpet home. Our rooms were lovely, again decor was amazing. We loved how they were set out. The little notes around the room were great too. We only had one problem and that was the lack of light. Staff were all so friendly, pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was fantastic too. So much effort put into ingredients and presentation.

We booked a Junior Suite directly through the hotel so that they had the revenue. When we went to check out we tried to confirm if room 44 was in fact a Junior Suite and also why the restaurant that we had looked forward to eating in on the Weds (was closed on the other two nights that we stayed) was closed without notice. Eventually, after two phone calls from the receptionist, the owner finally came to meet us to discuss. She was the same person who, having had difficulty parking in the hotel parking the previous evening while I was getting something out of the car demanded aggressively to know if we were staying in the hotel and then demanded to know what room number without introducing herself (despite that ours was the only car displaying the hotel's sign in the dashboard). She clearly was not interested in the feedback that we gave regarding surprise that our room looks nothing like any of those that are displayed on the website as Junior Suites nor that the 'sink' and bathroom facilities are poor. No mirror in front of you in the bathroom and lighting so dim it could be a nightclub. Definitely need to hoover under the beds! We explained how disappointed we were that the restaurant was closed on the Wednesday when we'd been told it was open as we had specifically come because of the newly awarded Michelin star and had hoped to eat there all three nights. She then became aggressive saying sarcastically that we had only mentioned all this when it was time to pay the bill. Yes, that is correct, that is the time to sum up the experience to the management. She as the owner is not interested at all in the feedback and apparently she is particularly 'proud' of the decor in that room, I think she perhaps designed it herself rather than using a professional. The staff are very pleasant but the whole experience was very disappointing. There is no point in staying in the hotel which offers a Michelin star restaurant if it is closed for two of the nights and then on the night that we had said we would dine there, closed without notice because of no bookings! The owner was insulting, did not care at all and offered no apology whatsoever.
