Picture this: you're on your honeymoon, where your wonderful, patient spouse indulges your crazy desire to stay in a castle. You save money and book an expensive suite at Château du Rivau for three nights because it's a lifelong dream, once in a lifetime. You arrive late in the evening, drop off luggage in your amazing-looking room, and have dinner in the beautiful garden at the castle. After a satisfying meal, you return to the comfort of your suite, only to discover the room is not something out of a fairytale fantasy... it's a bloody nigh**are. Picture this: a graveyard of dead flies surrounds you. Countless bodies of dead flies absolutely litter your entire suite. Dead flies adorn the floors, gathering in higher densities near the windows, their bodies sprinkled on the floor all around the bed. Intrepid individuals have crawled into nooks and crannies to die, including a handful under your pillows. It is far too late. You are locked in. There is no staff at night. You are exhausted and want to scream and run away, but you don't want to ruin the trip. Your amazing, infinitely patient spouse sweeps away the bodies of insects off the bed, including a live spider, and even checks under the sheets for strays. None there, mercifully. You try to sleep but can't, because there is a single, surviving fly buzzing up in the ceiling, trying desperately to escape. Go ahead and spend hours pondering that fly's pitiful, doomed existence, seeing its fate in its expired brethren scattered all over the floor. Go ahead and try not to think of crushing their bodies underfoot as you must inevitably get up and walk around the room in the long-awaited morning. Go ahead and pray that this last fly--let's call it Gerard, shall we?--will not choose to lay itself to rest somewhere over your head and fall lifelessly on to your face. Go ahead and spend six sleepless hours repressing your own despair, and perhaps use the (long, oh my god far too long) time awake to compose a wretched review such as this one. This was our reality: I had dragged my poor spouse into an insect horror show on our honeymoon. When morning arrived, I discovered the body of Gerard on the vanity upstairs; it hadn't been there the night before so I assume it was Gerard. We headed to the front desk downstairs--by the way, there are no elevators, so tough luck if you have lots of heavy luggage or are disabled. The receptionist, Mateo, was professional and understanding, but also new--no idea how this happened and escaped housekeeping's notice. He apologized and promised they would clean everything and change the sheets, so perhaps there was a chance to salvage this? We left for the day, hoping we'd get the experience we were here for. To their credit, I believe housekeeping did clean and change the sheets, but when my wonderful, infinitely patient spouse went up to our room to check after we got back that afternoon, the situation had only gotten worse. The insect graveyard was out of control. And

The chateau was comfortable and had modern amenities (especially the bathtub). The gardens were very beautiful and perfect for children. The meals were delicious and fresh, with vegetables and fruits that were grown at the chateau. It was like a fairy tale.

We did a comprehensive tour of Loire Valley, staying at a different place every night over a 10 day trip & we were surprised that our stay at Chateau du Rivau was the highlight of our trip as we weren't sure what to expect. There are only a few rooms & after the public leaves, the grounds are largely empty so you can have the feeling of what it is like to live in an impeccably beautiful chateau where the huge grounds are all landscaped beautifully & diversely & the castle & grounds is filled with fascinating artwork. The rooms themselves are furbished beautifully. I work myself in the area of restoring old buildings (100-120 years old-- not quite this old!) & I spent a lot of time admiring the craftsmanship that went into the restoration. The doors & windows that were rebuilt, keeping with the times, the most mini recessed lights, the exposed beams & stone. I felt that everything was perfect. As is the case with all of the chateaux we saw, there are passionate people who embarked on restoring them - bravo to the family who has dedicated themselves to restoring this chateau. Again, having done a grand tour of hotels across the Loire Valley, this really stood out due to the restoration preserving the historical character while infusing modern day luxuries/necessities & also style. Everything here is unique- nothing generic. In addition, it stood out because of the hotel hosting only a small number of guests, you are able to get lost in your own magical experience (the landscape, the trees, the birds, the castle, the sunset) without even feeling like you are at a hotel with other people. The property is adjacent farmland so there are not sounds or distractions from neighbors either. Although the setting is rural, it is also very close to chateaux to see & the beautiful medieval towns of Chinon & Loches (both were 2 of our favorite towns in Loire). I had gone into the stay, thinking it was going to be kid-centric (we have kids). But it's even more romantic than it is family oriented. Everyone in our family was completely charmed by the place. The restaurant was excellent (must book ahead & menu is small-based on their locally grown food), breakfast buffet was delicious as well & the chateau tour is interesting, though it is small. This is the hotel experience you dream of and are likely only to experience once in a lifetime.....

Beautifully restored 15th century castle in the countryside. Our room was beautiful and roomy. Breakfast was generous and included in the room rate. Sadly the service was not good. We were promised a picnic basket on our arrival since the restaurant was closed due to the chef being ill. However, there was no picnic basket when we arrived and not later even after we asked about it a few times. Nobody working there knew anything about it. We had been flying & driving for almost 24 hours. We weren’t about to go back out to try and find a restaurant. And there were picnic baskets for the other 2 guests that were staying there. And can some please change the water in the poor pigeon cages?

A well organised hotel in the castle offering everything you need. Lunch and dinner were equally excellent, breakfast well prepared and responsible due to COVID restrictions. Guided tour of the castle included.
