We stayed here with a walking group, though we were scattered throughout the hotel in our rooms. We had a room in the new part of the hotel with a south-facing view which meant we got sun when we returned from walks in the afternoon and could sit and relax before dinner. The beds were comfy and big, the bathroom quite well equipped, but the shower was a tad feeble. There was a ceiling fan in our room whose operation was a mystery - it would just come on, silently, like a giant moth. My theory was that previous occupants had programmed it with a control that remained beyond our patience to learn to use. We preferred to sleep with the french windows open, which meant the air con went off - this was fine by us. The grounds and beach were lovely. Our main disappoin**ent was the food. I was hoping for a much more Italian take on the contents of the courses, and was unhappy with the preponderance of dishes with cream in the ingredients. We wondered if this was (a) catering for the German bus parties who came and went all week or (b) a relic of the history of the location vis-a-vis Austria, but the best course of all was one made specially for me and my husband with a tomato sauce because we'd been misled into ordering what turned out to be a creamy pasta. To be fair, the Maître d' came to me with the pasta to tell me he didn't think I'd be able to eat it - and offered to bring me the replacement. One last grouse: our Group Leader had to help us with our cases when we left, as there is NO LIFT and we were up three flights of stairs. Someone brought our cases up when we arrived, but this is a problem - it wouldn't do the nice shiny stairs much good if we all bumped cases down them. (It wouldn't do the cases much good either, come to that.) On the plus side: there's a wonderful dawn chorus and a blackbird given to long serenades from the roof ...
