Cultural Elements: Guests noted the unique decor that incorporated Chinese elements, reflecting the hosts' history in China. This added a distinctive cultural aspect to their stay, further enriched by the availability of Chinese breakfast options and language support.(based on 3 reviews)

Because I wanted to see the little penguins 🐧, I had to stay overnight in Oamaru, and ultimately chose to check out this hotel, which was ranked number one on the B&B list. I really liked the hotel's decor, which incorporated many Chinese elements, as the owner had lived in different cities in China for over 20 years. The biggest surprise was that I actually had the only Chinese meal of my South Island trip for breakfast! 😄👍

The manor is well maintained. The service is also very considerate, It's a pity that I only stayed for one night. This trip is not required.

James' service and attitude were excellent. Great value for money. Very nice to stay here for one night and the continental breakfast was also very good. Too bad they are closing, so hurry if you want to stay.

We were blown away by this wonderful Art Nouveau house built in the 1880s and only ever owned by 4 owners. It has wonderful furniture much of it bought by the original owner and added to by the subsequent ones. It is like staying in a private house, not least because the hosts/owners, James and James, greet you personally and are present throughout your stay. One James does the cooking and the other the gardening, producing all the fruit and vegetables. You dine with the other guests as you would in private house. James’s cooking is excellent. Again breakfast is with the other guests with wonderful homemade jams and eggs any way you like. All in all a great visit.

The property itself is lovely. Clean, comfortable rooms and a charming setting that feels exactly like what you’d hope for in an historic lodge. Unfortunately, the experience was let down significantly by the owners James and James. We were excited to arrive only to met with frowns rather than smiles. Interactions felt unwelcoming and at times quite uncomfortable, which was surprising given how warm the place looks on arrival. Simple requests were met with irritation rather than hospitality, and it felt as though guests were more of an inconvenience than a priority. It’s a real shame, because with friendlier owners/staff this could be a wonderful place to stay. It feels as though they do not want to be in the hospitality business anymore.

Unfortunately I could only give this place 5! A beautiful historic house with just 5 rooms. Our room, the Nest Room, was large with a sunken bedroom, i.e. steps down into it and up to the bathroom. We had the best night's sleep in all our time in NZ. Then the breakfast. Home made jams, honey from the owners bees and other things. Started with a fresh buttered scone before a great full breakfast. The owners, both called James, have thought of everything as far as service goes and are extremely helpful in response to any questions. The best B&B my wife and I have ever stayed in.

Fabulous place to stay with great hosts. James and James could not do enough for us. They have an amazing place in a great location. The room was well furnished with lots of little extras. The lounge and games room were fabulous and there was a full size snooker table as well as loads of books and games. The food was definitely 5 star and all in all would highly recommend.
