The hotel is located in the north of the island in a small village, so keep that in mind when booking it

Spacious rooms. Immaculately clean. Lovely views. Buffet offered excellent choice and standard. Very quiet. Enjoyed both indoor (occasionally) and indoor (often) pools. Above all the friendly and efficient staff made one feel very welcome. Will be returning (deo volente). Walks around village are, like all Madeira, are partly uphill.

Generally a proper hotel, nice facilities. It is visible that the hotel was built many years ago, and both the rooms, the facilities and also the visitors are a bit outdated. I would not recommend for younger couples, but for older people this could work. It is in a quite area.

Visited on a Saga holiday and were very impressed. Room was large and comfortable. Staff were very friendly and could not do enough for you. Food in the restaurant was excellent. The only downside was that it was quite remote; however if you want a relaxing holiday it would be hard to beat, or if you have transport it makes a wonderful base to explore the north of the island. We will certainly revisit

Saga holiday which I found was great value staying in this delightful small hotel in an ideal location. I chose this resort for the peace and tranquillity that I desired and because I hadn’t really experienced the North coast on my travels to Madeira in the past. The hotel has good facilities for swimming and low impact sport. Dining was better than I expected and the menus were varied and adequate. The staff were exceptional and couldn’t be more friendly. If you are a photographer you will not be disappointed with the location and accessibility of locations that are fantastic to just wander about in, admiring the views. The scenery is quite outstanding. Travel to local locations is fairly simple by public transport or the shuttle bus which the hotel provides for visits to Sao Vicente. Reception can provide details on travel requirements and trips throughout the island. Whilst at the hotel I travelled to local locations, to Funchal and to Nuns Valley. There was always something to do at the resort and I was lucky during my stay to have great weather. The clientele were from all over Europe and the Saga group which I was part of were extremely friendly and a pleasure to be in the company of. I didn’t encounter any downside during my visit. Yes, the hotel could do with a slight makeover but this shouldn’t distract anyone for visiting. If you are requiring a break simply to recharge yourself then this is an ideal location.

Saga cancelled our long planned walking holiday, based at this hotel, one week before departure date. They blame the hotel for over booking so it would be interesting to hear a response from Monte Mar Palace. Hotel. Beware anyone considering booking with Saga. We only found out about cancellation because our friends who booked separately were informed. I spent a day chasing Saga to clarify and we're still waiting for a refund despite sending bank details on 4 separate occasions. The only information we can get is that it is being 'processed'. It's now been nearly 3 weeks and we'd have come back from Madeira yesterday.

Just back from the most wonderful holiday. Our first visit to Madeira and the Monte Mar palace. We stayed for all a week all inclusive and had the best time. The hotel is wonderfully situated with brilliant ocean and mountain views. We watched three brilliant sunsets during our stay and enjoyed some great walks from the hotel. We stayed in room 213 which had a great view of the ocean. At night we slept with the balcony door open listening to the sound of the waves, so tranquil. The room was clean with plenty of storage. The food served exceeded my expectations. I’m a vegetarian and usually struggle to find much choice on an all inclusive break but there was something on offer every mealtime Parmagana, sweet and sour veg, curry, cauliflower cheese, pizza and pasta. Plenty of fresh fruit and veg. Breakfast had lots of choices too. The staff were brilliant- professional, friendly and helpful particularly in the dinning room. The outdoor pool has the most wonderful views and was surprisingly quiet. The hotel was pretty much full when we stayed there but the pool area was always relatively quiet with plenty of sun beds. A good size outdoor pool I enjoyed a few lengths in it early morning. The hotel offer you a poolside towel for a returnable 10€ deposit. I took advantage of this, it’s nice to have a fresh towel every day. I didn’t use the indoor pool much as the sun was shining but I loved the jacuzzi which had a good sea view too. All in all a brilliant holiday.

Sorry to say don't go there without a helmet to protect your head. And don't sit on settee under open balcony above in the Cliff bar.I had a head injury .A bunch of keys were dropped down from the height by a child.Balconies not covered in and a death trap for tge next victim.Hotel and Saga deny any liability.Beware of this.ALL BALCONIES inside are open.Saga have not taken it seriously

My husband and I have just returned from a 3 week stay at the Monte Mar Palace Hotel staying on a SAGA all inclusive package. We found it a haven of peace, tranquillity and rejuvenation. The staff were delightful, the scenery from the cliff top position was stunning, the food good, especially the waiter served lunches, and the sports facilities enough for our needs. We were also blessed with good weather and good company throughout our stay. However, the remoteness that appealed to us might not suit everyone. Walks within the village are hilly and local buses few and far between. But for people of any age or level of fitness there is a satifaction in sampling the hospitality of local cafes and bars, talking to local people, seeing the wild flowers and tropical plants along the mountain paths and experiecing the magnificent views during trips on local buses. We also loved the sunsets over the sea and the constant sound of the breaking waves. As Sue says there is a need to research the location before you come and see if it suits you and if it does bring maps and guide books with you as they are not easy to obtain locally. Thank you Sue for your kind words and good company. We were sorry not to have a chance to say goodbye. Perhaps it should be 'au revoir' as we definitely hope to return next year.
