This hotel is truly appalling. Please avoid and do not book! On entering the hotel there is a stench of damp. The reception is signed to be at the bar on the first floor. The stair carpet was filthy and damp. There was no one around in the reception at all. There was a handwritten note stuck on the door saying the bar is closed and to ring a mobile number in an emergency. I did this and the man who answered said he would be there in a few minutes but the room wasn’t ready. It was one hour after check in and there were no other guests! He took us to our room which was ok apart from a dirty loo and shower..

On arrival you are greeted with a foul smell of damp as you ascend the stairs on a filthy carpet. The room was adequate but the shower had not been cleaned. Shower gel and hair stuck to the tiles. Cooked breakfast was not served both days we stayed! No staff present to serve it. We complained to the young lad on the bar who said he didn't know why that happened but it would be served the next day. It wasn't! We had to go into the kitchen as there was no water in the kettle. The kitchen is absolutely filthy. Several health and safety violations are clearly occurring. We complained to the hotel who said there was a staffing problem but we would be compensated and to provide bank details. We did this on October 2nd and heard nothing. On October 15th they informed *********** that there would be no compensation despite having a screenshot of the message saying we would. Please do not book a stay here.

Please, please, please avoid this dump if at all possible. We stayed for 3 nights in September and it was awful. We have an unsubstantiated suspicion that this hotel may actually, potentially, have gone bust or that it may be in the process of doing so. We've called and emailed to make a complaint but no-one has replied. It may be that there is actually no management in place currently. Our complaints were as follows: - 1] On arrival we noticed a really strong stench in the hotel which seemed to emanate from the stair carpet. This carpet is ingrained with filth and does not appear to have been cleaned for many months, if at all. This did not present a good first impression for us. 2] The floor tiles in our bathroom were cracked in places. We felt that this was unhygienic and also dangerous if using the bathroom barefooted. 3] There was substantial mould around the bath unit. When we complained this was cleaned in part, but not fully. 4] The curtains had not been fitted correctly - a number of the curtain rings were missing. In consequence we were woken by light as the day broke on all of the 3 days of our stay. 5] Breakfast was not advertised as being served until 8.30am. This, we felt, was much too late. In any event - on all 3 days - breakfast was not ready to be consumed until 8.40am approx. There was no milk available for cereals, the kettle had not been boiled up for drinks, and the yogurts that were served (which were delicious by the way) were not available as we arrived for our breakfast at 8.30am. 6] On the last day of our stay someone - presumably another guest - had placed a half-eaten burger on top of the door frame in the dining room. This obviously disgusted us, and was done perhaps by someone in order to 'test' the hotels cleaning protocols. We should stress that we made no complaints against the staff that served us. In fact, the staff members that we engaged with were courteous, professional, and efficient. They were, however, clearly short-staffed when we stayed, and also short on provisions - there was no butter on one day at breakfast and beer choices were very limited. We should also stress that our complaints in the main were in light of operational protocols regarding cleaning and maintenance. We did try to find alternative accommodation once we realised the errors of our ways in booking this place. However, we had to stay here as there was nothing else available locally at a reasonable price. Please only book here if you seriously have no alternative. This hotel is only suitable for guests on a very limited budget, for guests who cannot find a place to stay elsewhere, or if you have made the same blunder that we did and have already booked.

Arrived to an appalling smell in the entrance hall. Room and en suite appeared ok. However no staff were available at all throughout the hotel at breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. Very little food left out for guests in the breakfast room so myself and other guests entered the kitchen to check for supplies. The photographs speak for themselves. The stacked dirty crockery has been untouched from one day to the next. There is no way I would eat anything which had been cooked there. PLEASE do not book, this kitchen is a health hazard.

the room was run down and needed updating sadly when the room upstairs had a shower so did i water running from the ceiling down the walls behind a wall mounted tv onto plug sockets when i found the only member of staff around and asked for help he said that he was getting his breakfast i left without breakfast and a good nights sleep after this i called the hotel 2 times but no manger was available and they haven't return my calls so i got in touch with *********** that i booked it with and sent the pics and videos they told me that this is not the first complaint they have had many and they will talk to the hotel after 5 days *********** said the hotel is not getting back to them so they can't do anything but here is a £10.04 credit note to book with them again I said not on your life when you know what is going on in this hotel is having so many issues and you are doing nothing just taking peoples money Please don't stay here you will just be another customer that gets ripped off

Do not book! Dangerous electrical set-ups, ice cold or scalding shower (no in between), mouldy bread. No TV remote. Dirty wine fridge. Excellent breakfast (apart from mouldy bread). Pleasant staff if that does it for you.

Can't say I'll be going back . Terrible foosty smell as you enter outside door . There was an excruciating noise from a boiler , or something that felt like it was ready to explode . So very little sleep ! The stair carpets were ,sadly, very dirty . That didn't give us very much confidence about the rest of the place . Foosty smell again outside the bedroom door . Thankfully not in the bedroom though ! The place has a very tired and run down feel about it ...the dining room reinforced that view . We told the staff that we were leaving a day early... no offer of another room was forthcoming . Just that the owner was on his way ! I hope he was told about our concerns....it could ,with a bit of effort , be a very nice place .

Just read Pam's review. Not good but at least she was forewarned about the lack of an evening meal service. We were there over Aug Bank Holiday. No staff turned out on the Sunday breakfast rota. No body to reorganise the situation, no apologies, no compensation, the management just ignored us in person, on the phone etc.

Arrived at the hotel to check in at 2.15 to find the place was like the Marie Celeste not a soul in sight. Rang the bell and telephoned the number to no avail so walked into Rothbury .Still no answer when phoned so went back at 4pm to find a lovely lady in charge ,She informed us we couldnt have an evening meal as they dont serve them now even though website said they do.The room was OK but the shower was hand held over a lovely bath .It meant you sprayed everything in sight. The Breakfast was good but was only a coffee maker you would have at home which kept having to be refilled for the 20 or so having breakfast. They appear to be working with limited staff and maybe need to up their game .It could be a lot better
