taotaogoatThe hotel's location is absolutely excellent, right in Cardiff city center. It's within walking distance of nearby malls, department stores, restaurants, cafes, markets, and the castle, making it incredibly convenient. Compared to other hotels of the same brand in different cities, this one offers better facilities and space. However, on my first day, I had an unpleasant experience at check-in with a female staff member who treated me unfairly, which left a bad taste in my mouth. I want to emphasize though that this was just one individual; all the other staff members I encountered were extremely friendly and polite.

Anonymous UserThe walls in the room were very dusty and with the air con on it came off the walls.
When using the roll in shower the water completely covered the whole of the bathroom and did not fully drain away.

I really enjoyed my stay overall. The location was fantastic—on a beautiful street—and the hotel building itself is stunning. When I arrived, I was warmly welcomed by a very kind Italian gentleman, which gave me a great first impression. My room, though located in a separate area, was clean, modern, and nicely decorated. Everything looked fresh and well thought out.
However, I was disappointed to find visible stains on the bed sheets. While I believe they had been washed, the stains hadn’t come out and the sheets were still used, which didn’t match the high standard the rest of the hotel presented. I think they should have replaced them.
Another minor inconvenience was the bathroom light, which was automatic and triggered the extractor fan. This meant that even during the night, using the bathroom caused the noisy fan to stay on for a while, which could’ve been avoided with a manual light switch, in my opinion.
Despite these issues, the stay was mostly very positive, but I can’t give a full five stars because of the sheets. Hopefully this can be improved for future guests.

Anonymous UserBooked here as I’m having an exam at Cardiff in the early morning. Soundproof was AWFUL even though I asked for a quiet room. Even with earplugs I can hear people opening and closing the doors at 2 AM and later as people jumping (?) on the floor above. I guess I only managed to sleep 3-4 hours that night, before the exam that matters a lot to me. It was DREADFUL. I don’t understand why I was given a room just opposite to the fire door (and being sandwiched between other rooms) even when I asked a quiet room - probably because of my race?
The room itself was small, without table and chairs, and without kettle. Window cannot be opened. The coffee machine in the lobby dispenses hot water for free, and staff members at reception were helpful in this case. Hygiene was fine but lime scale and grease were visible on the shower head.

Last minute decision to stay over in Cardiff and this is in an ideal location and reasonable price. Staff at reception/bar couldn't have been more helpful when I struggled with the check in units! Room was fine, quiet & with everything I needed. Sunday night but restaurant was still open so had lovely meal there & breakfast the next morning always a cracker. Note their deal if you're having both by the way.

Location was excellent. Right in the city centre. Don't be confused though, there are two Travelodges and we went to the wrong one first which was conveniently close to the train station. A short taxi ride took us to the correct one. Reception is unusually on the 3rd floor, but friendly staff. Your pass key will only unlock your floor which also has safety doors. Be careful not to put it near your phone as it desensitised it and it won't unlock anything - like mine, but a visit to the Reception fixed that. Felt very safe there as the automatic doors from street level lock at night, so no one could wander in off the street. A bar and cafe located on same 3rd floor as Reception was convenient for a drink and snack. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Cardiff has a large pedestrian area, so it was easy to walk to major shops, restaurants and pubs (recommend the Owain Glyndwr) and attractions such as Bute Park and Cardiff Castle were easy to walk to. The Christmas markets and Winter Wonderland were also close by and beautiful to view at night. Foreign money exchange was a short walk from hotel at the Queen Street shopping arcade entrance.

Guest UserPlease note that Travelodge hotels in the UK do not offer luggage storage services. Because we arrived early and our room wasn't ready yet, early check-in was not an option, and the hotel could not hold our bags. We had no choice but to transport our heavy luggage to a nearby third-party storage facility. Aside from this logistical issue, the rest of the amenities were standard and acceptable.

This was a lovely room! Didn't have its own bathroom which I wasn't expecting but I think that's just me not really reading the listing! The person who checked me in was lovely and the room was warm and decorated nicely. Thanks!

It is a good hotel, good size swimming pool & have both steam room and sauna, however, been twice now on weekdays and both times very busy.
Mainly self check-ins which loses the personal touch I feel and not too happy charged extra for parking giving the location of the hotel.
Great service in the restaurant.

I’m so glad we decided to stay at The Coal Exchange Hotel in Cardiff. I’d been given the very important job of finding a place to stay overnight for my friend’s special birthday. I didn’t really know where to start, so I compared prices of hotels in the area. I was surprised to find that the ‘budget’ hotels Premier Inn and Travelodge were no cheaper than The Coal Exchange for the given dates! I had a look at the photos and reviews and it looked perfect for a special occasion. It was steeped in history with the interior design staying true to the period in which it was built. Originally, as there were five of us, I had booked the sextuplet room. It looked amazing and we were all really excited about staying there. Unfortunately though, due to maintenance work being carried out on that part of the building, we had to change our plans to three double rooms right next to each other. The rooms were beautiful. Floor to ceiling double windows, opulent wallpaper, ornate period furniture and a lovely comfortable centrepiece bed.
The bathrooms had gorgeous jacuzzi baths and stone basins.
The following morning we had a delicious breakfast in Culley’s Restaurant situated inside the Coal Exchange.
The staff here are very friendly and go out of their way to ensure you have the best stay.
Can’t wait to go back.
