South Africa in 10 Days: The Ultimate Itinerary from Cape Town to Safari
The Dream Route: Cape Town → Ocean → Penguins → Vineyards → Garden Route → Safari 🦁
South Africa is one of those countries where a single trip feels like you've stepped into several different worlds at once.
Picture having breakfast with a view of the ocean and Table Mountain in the morning.
A few days later, you're standing inches away from African penguins.
Then, you hit one of the country's most scenic drives, spend the night nestled between forests and the ocean, and wrap up your trip encountering elephants, lions, and other incredible wildlife.
If you've got 10 days to spare, here’s exactly how I’d do it 👇
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🗺️ THE FULL ITINERARY
Cape Town → Cape Peninsula → Franschhoek → Hermanus → Mossel Bay / Wilderness → Knysna → Plettenberg Bay → Tsitsikamma → Addo Elephant National Park → Gqeberha
✈️ Arrival: Cape Town International Airport — CPT
✈️ Departure: Gqeberha / Port Elizabeth Airport — PLZ
🚗 Pro tip: Rent a car in Cape Town and drop it off in Gqeberha.
This way, you won't have to backtrack to Cape Town, turning your route into an epic road trip.

🏙️ DAY 1 — CAPE TOWN
Getting acquainted with one of the most beautiful cities in the world
After touching down, don't try to see everything all at once.
South Africa is the kind of place where you shouldn't just check off sights, but rather take your time to soak in every single spot.
Kick things off with:
⛰️ Table Mountain — If the weather is playing ball, head straight up to Table Mountain. It offers the absolute best views of the entire city, the ocean, and the coastline.
🏘️ Bo-Kaap — A vibrant historic neighborhood famous for its brightly colored houses.
⚓ V&A Waterfront — A bustling harbor full of restaurants, shops, and stunning views of Table Mountain.
🌊 In the evening, take a stroll along the Sea Point Promenade or grab dinner around the Waterfront.
📍 Where to stay: V&A Waterfront, Sea Point, or Gardens.
💡 Heads up: Don't lock Table Mountain down to one specific day. Cape Town's weather is notoriously fickle, so head up on the very first clear morning when the cableway is running.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🌿 DAY 2 — CAPE TOWN AND ITS MOST GORGEOUS SIDE
Today is another day in the city, but with completely different vibes and landscapes.
🌺 Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden — Hands down one of the most stunning botanical gardens in the country.
🏖️ Camps Bay — A chic beach boasting views of the Twelve Apostles mountain range.
🚗 Chapman’s Peak Drive — One of the most jaw-dropping scenic drives around Cape Town.
You can also add:
🍽️ aesthetic beachfront restaurants;
📸 epic viewpoints;
🌊 a relaxing walk along the ocean.
This is a day to take it easy.
Because tomorrow, the real peninsula adventure kicks into high gear.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🐧 DAY 3 — CAPE OF GOOD HOPE & PENGUINS
One of the most beautiful days of the entire trip
🚗 Route:
Cape Town → Simon’s Town → Boulders Beach → Cape Point → Cape of Good Hope → Cape Town
Hit the road bright and early.
🐧 Boulders Beach
This spot is home to one of the most famous colonies of African penguins.
Yep, real-deal penguins—in Africa.
And it’s one of those bucket-list spots that makes a trip to South Africa totally worth it on its own.
The penguins waddle among massive granite boulders, swim in the ocean, and just go about their business mere feet away from visitors.
📍 Boulders Beach, Simon’s Town
🌊 Cape Point
Next up, head over to the Cape Point Nature Reserve.
Towering cliffs, roaring ocean, wild beaches, and that undeniable "edge of the world" feeling.
You can hike up to the iconic lighthouse or catch a ride on the funicular.
And make sure you swing by:
📍 Cape of Good Hope
⚠️ Keep your distance from the wildlife, and whatever you do, do not feed the baboons.
💡 If possible, loop back via Chapman’s Peak Drive—provided the road is open. It's one of the absolute most scenic stretches of the journey.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🍷 DAY 4 — THE VINEYARDS OF FRANSCHHOEK
A day where you’ll want to take it incredibly slow
🚗 It's about a 1.5-hour drive from Cape Town to Franschhoek.
It feels like a completely different world.
Instead of the ocean, you're surrounded by rolling vineyards, rugged mountains, picturesque wine estates, and quaint restaurants.
My two cents: don't try to cram 6 or 7 wineries into one day.
Pick 2 or 3 and really savor the experience.
🍷 Wine tasting
🍽️ Lunch amidst the vines
📸 Breathtaking mountain vistas
🚋 Franschhoek Wine Tram
This hop-on hop-off tram is one of the coolest ways to winery-hop. It operates across several different colored lines, so you can pick the route that suits your vibe beforehand.
💡 Heads up: If you're going heavy on the tastings, don't drink and drive. You can book a transfer from Cape Town or just spend the night in Franschhoek.
📍 Where to stay: Franschhoek
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🐋 DAY 5 — FRANSCHHOEK → HERMANUS → GARDEN ROUTE
Today is when the real road trip kicks off.
If you're traveling during whale season, you absolutely have to pit-stop in Hermanus.
🐋 This town is world-renowned for whale watching. During the season, you can hop on a boat tour or literally just spot whales breaching right from the shoreline.
But even if the whales are out of town, the stunning drive and ocean scenery make it well worth the detour.
After stretching your legs, hit the road toward the Garden Route.
I'd recommend crashing for the night at one of two spots:
🌊 Mossel Bay — If you're looking to cut your driving time short for the day.
🌿 Wilderness — If you want to wake up surrounded by lush nature, beaches, and dense forests.
📍 My pick: Wilderness.
🚗 A car is a must here—the journey between these spots is half the adventure.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🌿 DAY 6 — WILDERNESS → KNYSNA
Ocean, forests, and lagoons
The Garden Route looks nothing like the dry savannas most people picture when they think of Africa.
Here, lush coastal forests hug the ocean, and the roads wind through unbelievably green landscapes.
Spend your morning exploring the Wilderness area.
Then, make your way over to Knysna.
Must-sees:
🌊 Knysna Heads — The iconic sea cliffs guarding the entrance to the lagoon.
🚶 Knysna Waterfront — Perfect for a sunset stroll, dinner, and a chill evening.
🌲 Scenic viewpoints dotted around the lagoon.
📍 Where to stay: Knysna.
💡 It’s a solid 500 km from Cape Town to Knysna, so I highly advise against trying to tackle it in a single day. Break up the drive and savor the Garden Route at your own pace.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🏖️ DAY 7 — KNYSNA → PLETTENBERG BAY → TSITSIKAMMA
Today is easily one of the most stunning legs of the trip.
First stop:
🏖️ Plettenberg Bay
This is the spot to wander along endless sandy beaches, gaze out at the ocean, and just take a breather before the next adventure.
Then, keep driving towards:
🌲 Tsitsikamma National Park
This is where one of the most dramatic, jaw-dropping natural stretches of the Garden Route begins.
What to do:
🥾 Hike a section of the coastal trails;
🌊 Check out where the lush forest literally plunges into the ocean;
🌉 Trek out to the famous Storms River Mouth Suspension Bridge.
📍 Where to stay: Tsitsikamma / Storms River, or anywhere right by the national park.
I'd absolutely recommend spending the night here—it's way less crowded and wonderfully peaceful in the evenings and early mornings.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🦁 DAY 8 — TSITSIKAMMA → ADDO ELEPHANT NATIONAL PARK
From the ocean straight to wild Africa
Today, the vibe of the itinerary totally shifts gears.
You’re leaving the ocean and lush green forests in the rearview mirror.
Up next—safari time.
🚗 Leave the Tsitsikamma area and head towards Addo Elephant National Park.
The drive takes a few hours, so it's best to hit the road in the morning and skip making too many pit stops.
Once you get checked in:
🦁 Head out on your very first safari game drive.
Late afternoon to evening is prime time for wildlife spotting.
In Addo, you can:
🚙 Go on a self-drive safari in your own rental car;
🦓 Book a guided game drive;
📸 Track down animals with the help of an expert ranger.
The park’s name is a dead giveaway—the elephant population here is off the charts.
📍 Where to stay: Inside or right next to Addo Elephant National Park.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🐘 DAY 9 — A FULL DAY ON SAFARI
This is the day most people dream of when they think about coming to Africa.
You’re going to need to wake up at the crack of dawn.
🌅 Morning safari
The wildlife is super active during this golden hour.
Afterward, you can chill out for a bit before heading back out for:
🌇 An evening safari
Getting out there twice in one day drastically ups your chances of spotting a wider variety of animals.
💡 Pro tip: If you can swing it, mix it up—do one self-drive safari and one guided game drive with a ranger.
It gives you two totally different, yet equally epic, perspectives.
And one key thing to remember: a safari is not a zoo.
There are zero guarantees you'll check off every animal on your list.
Sometimes the most mind-blowing moments happen when you least expect it: an elephant crashing out of the bush, a giraffe casually crossing the road, or a lion lounging so far off in the distance that only your ranger’s eagle eyes could spot it.
That very unpredictability is what makes a safari a true adventure.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🦁 DAY 10 — FINAL SAFARI AND DEPARTURE
If time allows, squeeze in one last early morning game drive.
It’s your final shot to catch some wildlife before heading home.
After that:
🚗 Make your way to Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth)
✈️ Airport: Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport — PLZ
It’s only about a 30 to 60-minute drive from the Addo area, depending on where you're staying.
Drop off your rental car here and catch your flight.
For instance:
✈️ Gqeberha → Cape Town
or
✈️ Gqeberha → Johannesburg
And from there—your international flight back home.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🚗 HOW TO GET AROUND ON THIS ITINERARY?
IN CAPE TOWN
For the first 2 or 3 days, you can rely on:
🚕 Uber
🚗 A rental car
🚐 Organized tours
But for the entire trip, renting a car is hands-down the way to go.
FOR THE CAPE PENINSULA + GARDEN ROUTE
🚗 Renting a car is your absolute best bet.
It gives you the ultimate freedom to pull over at scenic viewpoints, switch up your route on the fly, and totally ditch any strict schedules.
Just keep in mind:
✔️ South Africa drives on the left side of the road;
✔️ Never leave your valuables visible in the car;
✔️ Avoid planning long drives after dark;
✔️ Download offline maps ahead of time.
FOR SAFARI
You can keep your rental car and do self-drive safaris along the designated roads inside the national park.
Or, you can book guided game drives with a ranger.
📍 For self-driving into Addo, make absolutely sure you have your passport and vehicle registration documents on hand.
