#cultureshock Tonight I went to see a traditional Balinese performance at Ubud Palace, and within the first few minutes I realized something: I had absolutely no idea how to “read” what I was watching. 😅 Before coming to Bali, I imagined traditional Balinese dance mostly as beautiful costumes, unusual music and an interesting cultural performance. But experiencing it in person felt completely different. 👀 The incredibly precise eye movements. 🖐️ The position of every finger. 😮 Facial expressions changing dramatically within seconds. 👣 Tiny, controlled movements of the feet. 🥁 And the powerful gamelan music that can go from almost hypnotic to incredibly intense. At first, my brain was basically: What is happening?! 😂 And then I realized — I was watching a cultural language I simply hadn’t learned yet. The dancers aren’t just moving beautifully to music. Their gestures, expressions, costumes, characters and music all work together to tell a story. And THAT was my little cultural shock moment tonight. Not because it felt strange in a negative way — quite the opposite. It reminded me how easily we travel somewhere new and try to understand another culture using categories we already know: “dance.” “concert.” “show.” “entertainment.” Sometimes the most interesting travel experiences begin when you admit: I actually don’t understand this yet. Tell me more. ❤️ 📌 SAVE THIS FOR YOUR UBUD TRIP If you’re visiting Bali, I really recommend seeing at least one traditional Balinese performance, and Ubud Palace (Puri Saren Agung) is probably one of the easiest places to add to an Ubud itinerary. 🎭 Traditional Balinese performance 📍 Ubud Palace, central Ubud 🎟️ 100,000 IDR per person 💵 That’s roughly $6 USD 💡 My biggest tip: learn a little about the story before the performance starts. Knowing who the characters are and what is happening makes the whole experience much easier to follow. Otherwise, especially on your first time, you may spend half the performance admiring the costumes while having absolutely no idea why everyone suddenly looks terrified. 😂 And watch the eyes and hands. Once you start noticing those tiny movements, you understand just how much precision and skill this art form requires. Another practical tip: Ubud Palace is right in the center, so you can easily combine the performance with Ubud Market, Saraswati Temple, dinner and an evening walk around central Ubud. For 100,000 IDR, I think it’s one of those cultural experiences worth adding to your Bali itinerary at least once. ❤️ Because sometimes culture shock isn’t being shocked by something. SAVE THIS POST FOR YOUR NUSA PENIDA TRIP 📌 If there’s one destination in Bali that activates several sides of my travel personality at once, it’s Nusa Penida. 🌿 The Nature Seeker wants the cliffs, beaches and turquoise water. 🎒 The Explorer wants to see what’s around the next corner. 📸 The Photographer wants to stop approximately every five minutes. 😎 And The Planner? She quickly realizes that Nusa Penida is NOT the island where you should arrive without understanding the logistics. 😄 So instead of just showing you beautiful photos, here’s the post I wish everyone saved before going: 🇮🇩 NUSA PENIDA: WHAT YOU ACTUALLY NEED TO KNOW First things first: Nusa Penida is much bigger than it looks on Instagram. You cannot realistically jump between every famous viewpoint, beach and snorkeling spot in a few hours without spending a huge part of your day in transit. The secret to enjoying Penida is not trying to see everything. It’s choosing the right combination of places. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🚤 1. HOW TO GET TO NUSA PENIDA Most travelers visit from Bali by fast boat. One of the most common departure points is Sanur, with boats taking you across the Badung Strait to Nusa Penida. 💡 PLANNER TIP: Don’t think only about the boat departure time. Factor in: · getting to the harbour · check-in · waiting · boarding · luggage · getting from the arrival port to your first stop · enough buffer before your return boat A “30–45 minute boat ride” can easily occupy a much larger part of your morning. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🗺️ 2. THE BIGGEST NUSA PENIDA MISTAKE: TRYING TO DO EAST + WEST IN ONE DAY This is probably the most important thing to understand. Many of Nusa Penida’s famous attractions are concentrated around two different sightseeing areas. 🌊 WEST NUSA PENIDA 🦖 Kelingking Beach Probably THE iconic Nusa Penida view — the famous T-Rex-shaped coastline. 💎 Crystal Bay Popular for swimming, sunsets and snorkeling/diving. 🌊 Broken Beach A spectacular natural rock arch surrounding a circular cove. 💦 Angel’s Billabong A natural infinity-pool-like formation beside the ocean. 🌅 EAST NUSA PENIDA 💎 Diamond Beach One of the most spectacular beaches on the island. 🌴 Atuh Beach A beautiful bay surrounded by dramatic cliffs and rock formations. 🏡 Rumah Pohon Tree House / Thousand Islands Viewpoint area Famous for panoramic coastal views. 💡 MY ADVICE: If you only have ONE DAY, choose East OR West. Trying to properly experience both can turn your dream island day into: car → photo → car → photo → car → panic about the boat. 😅 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⏰ 3. IF YOU ONLY HAVE ONE DAY My ideal structure would be: EARLY MORNING 🚤 Fast boat from Bali MORNING 🎒 Start your chosen East or West route LUNCH 🍽️ Proper food + hydration break AFTERNOON 🌿 Continue exploring without trying to add ten extra stops BEFORE THE BOAT 💦 Relax somewhere near the harbour LATE AFTERNOON / EVENING 🚤 Return to Bali The most important word here is: BUFFER. Do not plan your final viewpoint so tightly that you spend the drive back wondering whether you’re about to miss your boat. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🛵 4. SCOOTER OR DRIVER? This is one place where I wouldn’t automatically assume renting a scooter is the best option just because you ride one elsewhere in Bali. Nusa Penida has improved considerably, but you can still encounter narrow, steep and uneven roads. If you’re not a very confident rider, hire a driver. You’ll also spend less mental energy navigating and more time actually looking at the island. For a group of two or more people, a private car can make even more sense. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🤿 5. DON’T FORGET THE WORLD UNDER THE WATER Nusa Penida isn’t only about those famous cliff photos. It’s also one of Bali’s major snorkeling and diving destinations. Common snorkeling areas include: 🐠 Crystal Bay 🌊 Gamat Bay 💙 Toyapakeh 🐟 SD Point 🌊 Manta Point / Manta Bay areas And yes — manta rays are one of the biggest reasons people come here. But please remember: Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Choose responsible operators, keep your distance from marine animals and never treat wildlife encounters like an attraction that owes you a photograph. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🐟 6. AND THEN THERE’S MOLA MOLA If you’re visiting during the cooler-water season, roughly July–October, Nusa Penida is also famous among divers for encounters with the extraordinary ocean sunfish — mola mola. They’re enormous, bizarre-looking and absolutely fascinating. But this is primarily a diving experience, not something I would plan a casual snorkeling trip around. Currents around Nusa Penida can also be very strong, so choose reputable dive operators and be realistic about your experience level. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🌊 7. BEAUTIFUL WATER DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN SAFE WATER This deserves its own section. Nusa Penida’s coastline can look impossibly inviting from above while conditions below are very different. Strong currents, waves and changing tides are part of this environment. ⚠️ Never assume a beach is safe for swimming simply because other tourists are standing near the water. Pay attention to local warnings and conditions that day. And if the ocean looks rough? The photo is enough. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 👟 8. WHAT TO WEAR This isn’t the day I’d choose purely aesthetic vacation shoes. 😄 Bring: 👟 comfortable shoes with grip 🧢 hat 🕶️ sunglasses 🧴 sunscreen 👙 swimsuit 👕 something light to cover your shoulders 💧 plenty of water If you’re planning to descend toward beaches, remember: going down is the easy part. You still have to climb back up. In tropical heat. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 💵 9. BRING SOME CASH Don’t rely completely on cards. Cash can be useful for: · small entrance fees · parking · local warungs · drinks/snacks · small purchases · unexpected expenses And keep smaller denominations with you. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 💦 10. MY FAVORITE LOGISTICS HACK: SAVE YOUR RELAXING STOP FOR THE PORT AREA This is one of those little decisions that can make a day much easier. Instead of finishing sightseeing early and then sitting around waiting for your boat, plan your final meal/drink/swim close to the harbour. We used Maruti Beach Club, which is within walking distance of the port area. That means: 🌴 pool 🍽️ food 🥤 drinks 💦 shower/refreshing break depending on available facilities ⚓ harbour nearby …instead of spending that final chunk of time simply waiting around. Just leave enough time to walk back and complete boarding procedures comfortably. This is exactly the kind of tiny logistics detail my Planner personality LOVES. 😄 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🌙 11. SHOULD YOU STAY OVERNIGHT? If your schedule allows it: YES. A day trip gives you a taste of Nusa Penida. Staying overnight gives you much more freedom. You can visit famous viewpoints earlier or later than the biggest day-trip crowds, explore at a slower pace and potentially divide East and West between different days. My ideal first trip? 2 DAYS / 1 NIGHT minimum. DAY 1: West Penida + sunset DAY 2: East Penida + return boat Add another day if snorkeling/diving is important to you. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📸 12. THE INSTAGRAM VS REALITY RULE Nusa Penida is breathtaking. But many of the photographs you’ve seen online hide: 🚗 driving time ☀️ heat 👥 crowds 🪜 stairs ⏳ queues 🥵 climbs back up 🌊 unpredictable ocean conditions None of this makes Penida less worth visiting. It simply means: come prepared for an adventure, not a photoshoot. And ironically, you’ll probably enjoy the photos much more. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ❤️ MY FINAL VERDICT Is Nusa Penida worth it? Absolutely. But I wouldn’t treat it as another Bali attraction to tick off. Give it time. Choose fewer places. Respect the ocean. Leave room for delays. Stop for food. Drink water. Put the camera down occasionally. And if possible, stay overnight. #funtravel2026 📍 Surya Kembar, Ubud, Bali If I could add one more personality to this week’s Travel Personality list, I think I’ve finally found mine: The Slow Traveler. 🌿 I love exploring. I love discovering hidden gems, trying local food, taking hundreds of photos and fitting as much as possible into every trip. But Bali has been teaching me another way to travel. Sometimes the best plan really is no plan at all. One evening at Surya Kembar, instead of chasing another sunset spot or squeezing one more attraction into the day, I stayed in the pool while daylight slowly disappeared, ordered food and simply… stayed. No checklist. No rush. No “where are we going next?” Just warm Bali air, water, tropical greenery, good food and one of those wonderfully slow evenings that somehow become a travel memory. 🌙 And that’s exactly why I wanted to share this place. 🌴 THE ATMOSPHERE Surya Kembar feels like a little escape from the busier side of Ubud. The surroundings are green and tropical, and the whole place has that relaxed villa-style atmosphere that makes you want to stay much longer than you originally planned. What I particularly loved was experiencing it in the evening. Come while there’s still daylight and you get the classic tropical Bali feeling. Stay until after sunset and the mood completely changes — quieter, softer and much more intimate. 💦 THE POOL EXPERIENCE This was probably my favorite part. There’s something wonderfully indulgent about coming somewhere without a strict schedule, getting into the pool and realizing you actually don’t need to be anywhere else for the next few hours. It turns a simple restaurant visit into a mini Bali escape. My ideal plan here would be exactly what we did: arrive with enough time to relax, swim, enjoy the surroundings and then stay for food. 🍽️ AND YES, THERE’S FOOD Because apparently even my Slow Traveler personality is still very much a Foodie. 😄 Being able to combine pool time with a proper meal is one of the things I liked about Surya Kembar. You don’t need to pack up and immediately start searching for somewhere else for dinner — you can simply continue the evening in the same relaxed setting. And honestly, after swimming and spending a few hours outside, food tastes even better. 📸 COME FOR THE PHOTOS — BUT STAY AFTER THEM Surya Kembar is also a beautiful place for photos. Pool, palms, tropical greenery and Bali light — you already have most of the ingredients. 💡 My tip: if you want photos, arrive before sunset. Take them while there’s still enough natural light, enjoy the transition into evening and then put your phone away for a while. Some places are worth photographing. Others remind you that you don’t have to photograph every minute of being there. This one gave me a little bit of both. ❤️ ✨ WHO IS THIS PLACE FOR? I’d particularly recommend Surya Kembar if you: · need a break between busy sightseeing days around Ubud · love combining good food with pool time · want somewhere where you can actually stay for a few hours · enjoy tropical, relaxed surroundings · are looking for a slower afternoon or evening · want beautiful Bali photos without making the entire experience about photos 💡 A FEW TIPS BEFORE YOU GO 🌿 Don’t rush it. I wouldn’t come here just to eat quickly and leave. Give yourself a few hours and make the pool part of the experience. 🌅 Late afternoon into evening is my favorite timing. You get daylight, golden-hour atmosphere and the completely different mood after dark. 👙 Bring your swimsuit. Even if you initially think you’re only stopping for food. 📸 Take your photos earlier. Once it gets properly dark, just enjoy the evening. 🍽️ Stay for a meal. It makes much more sense to experience the place as one long relaxing afternoon/evening rather than treating the restaurant and pool as separate activities. 🗓️ Save places like this for the middle of a busy Bali itinerary. After several days of temples, waterfalls, cafés, viewpoints and day trips, having absolutely nowhere else to be can feel surprisingly luxurious. ⭐ WORTH IT OR NOT? For me: worth it. But not because Surya Kembar is another Bali attraction you need to add to an already overcrowded itinerary. Quite the opposite. I liked it because for a few hours, there was no itinerary. And maybe that’s the side of my travel personality Bali has helped me discover. I’m still an Explorer. 🎒 Definitely a Foodie. 🍜 Very often a Photographer. 📸 And, admittedly, quite a Planner. 😄 But increasingly, I’m also The Slow Traveler. The traveler who is learning that seeing more doesn’t necessarily mean experiencing more. Sometimes you don’t need another temple, another viewpoint or another pin on the map. As an AirAsia travel enthusiast, I flew to Bali again. This time, I took an unconventional route and turned the trip into an "island sports training camp"—hiking and diving, unlocking a different way to experience the island through sports. · Started training right after landing! Took a few laps swimming in the waters of Nusa Dua first; the sea feels way more exciting than a pool. After getting out, I stretched with a yoga instructor to relax my muscles and get ready for more action. In the afternoon, I grabbed a board to surf, and the moment the waves splashed on my face, all the stress just vanished. · Of course, hardcore activities aside, the classic sights can’t be missed. · The Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue is huge and impressive, and every shot at Ubud Palace looks like a postcard. Took a stroll through the Ubud Market, where the handmade crafts were quite interesting. The rice terraces are truly beautiful, with an unreal shade of green, and the cliffside sea views at Nusa Penida are simply divine—you’d regret not climbing up for the view here. · Highly recommend a trip to Surabaya; it’s just a one-hour ferry ride from Bali. Both Mount Bromo and Mount Ijen are worth visiting! Climbing the volcanoes is exhausting, but watching the sunrise from the summit makes it all worthwhile. After descending, wander around Tunjungan Old Street, full of local life and atmosphere—it’s so refreshing. · This time, I chose AirAsia again! Departing from Guangzhou with a stopover in Kuala Lumpur, leaving half a day to explore—checked in at the Petronas Twin Towers and caught a glimpse of the Pink Mosque. The stopover didn’t slow down the fun. From there, you can continue flying to places like Surabaya and Bangkok, with plenty of routes making travel smooth. · AirAsia’s DIY model really gets me. No forced baggage fees; you just pick what you need, no extra charges for unused allowances. The flight attendants are warm but not overbearing, making the flight comfortable. Located in Mas, Ubud, right by Wedja Restaurant, this little shop specializes in beautifully packaged Indonesian sweets that are perfect both for trying yourself and bringing home as edible souvenirs from Bali. 🥮 What is pia? The star here is pia — small round pastries with a crumbly, slightly flaky exterior and a soft filling inside. Pia/bakpia has Chinese-Indonesian roots and became particularly famous in Java, especially around Yogyakarta. Today you’ll find different versions across Indonesia, and Jajanan Wedja offers its own Bali souvenir interpretation — proudly advertised outside as “Best Pia in Bali.” 😄 🍫 Which flavors should you try? There are several fillings to choose from: 🌱 Mung bean — the one I’d recommend if you want a more traditional Indonesian taste. Concrete, wood, greenery and a semi-open courtyard give it that modern Bali aesthetic without making the place feel overly fancy. 💻 Actually convenient for working. There are plenty of tables and power outlets, so you can easily bring your laptop and stay for a while. 🍳 It’s not only about coffee. There are breakfast options and proper meals too, so you can come for anything from a quick coffee to brunch or lunch. 💰 Good value for money. Probably one of my favorite things about places like this — you still get the lovely Bali café experience without paying tourist-area prices. 🌙 Open until around 10 PM, which is especially convenient because many smaller cafés around Bali close relatively early. 👀 THE MINUSES 🦟 Semi-open spaces = Bali nature comes with you. Especially in the evening, mosquito repellent can be useful. ☀️ The courtyard can get hot during the day. If you’re planning to work here for several hours, I’d choose your table carefully. 📸 It’s cute, but I wouldn’t call it a destination photo spot. Come for the atmosphere, food, coffee and convenience rather than planning a special photoshoot. 📍 Not somewhere I’d necessarily cross the whole island for. But if you’re staying nearby? They smile and greet you on the street, and market vendors patiently gesture to recommend delicious food Even if you don’t speak the language, they’ll do their best to help with directions or carry your things Lazy local music drifts through the streets, and the evening breeze feels relaxed and free The food is affordable and amazing! Sweet, tender Indonesian fried chicken, fresh and juicy tropical fruits Rich and aromatic kopi luwak, authentic and tasty satay skewers You can eat until full for just a few dozen bucks, the value is truly unbeatable ✅ But the reason I won’t return isn’t because it’s bad! I’ve never had lunch quite like this in Bali. 🐠 If you’re heading to Bali, I’d definitely put Koral Restaurant at The Apurva Kempinski Bali on your list. We had lunch beside a huge aquarium, with colourful fish and rays swimming past while we ate. It’s such a fun change from the usual Bali dining experiences, and honestly, the setting alone makes it worth visiting. Thankfully, the food and service lived up to the surroundings too. The multi-course lunch was beautifully presented, while the service was polished, attentive and warm without feeling overly formal. Lunch menus start from IDR 1,200,000++ per person. 3 tips if you’re planning a visit: 1️⃣ Book ahead, especially if you want a good aquarium view. 2️⃣ Go for lunch, I loved seeing the aquarium in the daylight. 3️⃣ Check the seating options. There’s also a tunnel experience at a slight top-up if you want to get even closer to the underwater action. I've been lucky enough to visit both Phuket and Bali, and while they're often compared, they offer completely different experiences. In Phuket, I loved starting my mornings at Kata Beach before driving to Promthep Cape for one of the best sunsets I've ever seen. Wandering through Old Phuket Town was another highlight, with its colorful streets, cozy cafés, and relaxed atmosphere. A day trip to the Phi Phi Islands easily became one of my favorite memories. Bali, on the other hand, felt more diverse. I spent peaceful mornings exploring the rice terraces around Ubud, watched the sunset at Uluwatu Temple, relaxed on the beaches of Nusa Dua, and ended my evenings enjoying seafood at Jimbaran Bay. Every area had its own unique vibe. If you're looking for beautiful beaches, island hopping, and a laid-back holiday, I'd choose Phuket. But if you want a mix of culture, nature, beaches, waterfalls, and vibrant cafés all in one trip, Bali is hard to beat. After visiting both, I'd happily return to either but if I could only choose one for a longer vacation, Bali would probably win by a small margin. Bali Beyond the Beaches: My 6-Day Island Adventure 🌺 Bali felt like several different destinations packed into one island. During this six-day trip, I experienced peaceful rice terraces, lively beach towns, dramatic clifftop temples, turquoise island views and some unforgettable Balinese food. Every area had a completely different atmosphere, which made the journey feel exciting without being rushed. I started in Ubud, where the mornings were cooler and quieter. Tegallalang Rice Terrace was especially beautiful early in the day, before the larger crowds arrived. I also explored the Sacred Monkey Forest and visited Tirta Empul, a traditional water temple surrounded by peaceful gardens and stone carvings. When visiting temples, remember to dress respectfully and bring or rent a sarong. The next part of the trip was spent around Canggu and Seminyak. This area was perfect for café hopping, boutique shopping and relaxed beach evenings. Batu Bolong and Echo Beach had a laid-back surfing atmosphere, while Seminyak offered more restaurants, shops and stylish places to stay. Watching the sunset with a coconut or iced coffee was one of the simplest but most memorable parts of the trip. For dramatic scenery, Uluwatu and Jimbaran were highlights. Uluwatu Temple sits above the ocean on towering cliffs, and the sunset views were incredible. The Kecak fire dance added a cultural experience to the evening. Afterwards, a seafood dinner beside Jimbaran Beach was the perfect way to end the day. I also took an early boat to Nusa Penida. Kelingking Beach was the most iconic viewpoint, but Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong and Crystal Bay were also worth visiting. The roads can be uneven and the attractions are spread out, so comfortable shoes and an early start are essential. My final sightseeing day focused on East Bali, including Lempuyang Temple, Tirta Gangga and the green landscapes around Sidemen. This side of Bali felt quieter and more traditional. It was a refreshing contrast to the busier beach areas. For transportation, hiring a driver was convenient for full-day routes, while scooters worked better for shorter journeys in quieter areas. My biggest advice is not to pack too many attractions into one day. Bali is best enjoyed slowly, with time for spontaneous cafés, local meals and unexpected viewpoints. We found Dahayu Kitchen almost by accident, but it quickly became one of those places we genuinely wanted to return to. It doesn’t feel like one of Bali’s overly polished viral cafés. Instead, it feels more like being invited into a warm family home. Nasi campur means “mixed rice” and usually comes with small portions of vegetables, chicken, tempeh, tofu, sambal and other local sides. The exact combination is different everywhere, which makes it fun to order again in new places. 🥜 Tipat Cantok Special — Rp25,000 A traditional Balinese dish made with rice cake, vegetables and a rich peanut sauce. The menu features exquisite steaks, a variety of seafood and delicacies, as well as high-end desserts. In addition, The Plantation Grill offers an extensive selection of wines and cocktails. As a complimentary treat, guests are served salted butter with a pretzel—it is simply delicious! At Chengdu Airport, we discovered Pop Mart vending machines where blind boxes could be purchased using Alipay. We did not need to leave the airport or visit a full store - the next mystery box was waiting between flights. As a souvenir, a blind box works best for someone who enjoys collectibles and surprises. The obvious risk is that you may not receive the character you hoped for.
