#hellohalloween Chasing castles often leads you to pristine keeps and restored halls. My quest for Brecon Castle led me on a different kind of hunt—a search for whispers in a modern landscape. This isn't a traditional visit, but a rewarding puzzle for the solo traveler who loves to piece history together. My Solo Itinerary: A Detective's Walk 11:00 AM - The Castle Hotel & A Hidden Arch I started my search at the obvious place: The Castle of Brecon Hotel. This isn't a gimmick; the hotel is built directly upon and within the castle's foundations. I wandered into its car park and found my first prize: a sturdy, weathered stone archway—a surviving fragment of the original 13th-century structure, standing defiantly between parked cars. It was a powerful, slightly surreal start. 11:30 AM - The River's Edge & Ely Tower From the hotel, I followed the path down to the serene banks where the River Honddu meets the River Usk. Here, nestled beside the water, is the castle's most substantial survivor: the Ely Tower. This rugged, lonely piece of wall was once part of the great hall. Standing there alone, with the rivers flowing past, it was easy to feel the strategic importance of this location, chosen by the legendary Bernard de Neufmarché. 12:00 PM - A Walk Through Time I spent the next hour simply walking the perimeter. I traced the line of the earthworks that are now green banks, and looked up at the fragments of wall incorporated into later buildings. The history here isn't handed to you on a plaque; you have to deduce it from the lay of the land and the scattered stones. Solo Traveler Tips I Discovered: · This is a Ruin Hunt: You are not visiting a curated attraction. You are a detective uncovering clues. Adjust your expectations accordingly. · Use a Map or Guide: A little online research beforehand is essential to know what you're looking for. Otherwise, you might just see a hotel and a car park. · Embrace the Atmosphere: The power of Brecon Castle is in its echoes. Let your imagination rebuild the fortress that once dominated this strategic confluence of rivers. · Combine with the Town: This is a brief but fascinating historical interlude. Afterwards, I rewarded myself with a solo exploration of Brecon's charming town centre and a visit to the magnificent Brecon Cathedral, which has its own deep history. The Cwm Llwch Horseshoe walk in the Brecon Beacons is a challenging, classic route that takes you up Cefn Cwm Llwch ridge to Pen y Fan, Cribyn, and potentially other peaks like Corn Du and Fan y Big, before descending into the valley of Cwm Llwch. As you descend into the valley below you can see the town of Brecon in the distance. It's about three miles away. I walked into the town of Brecon and my first port of call was the market. The town remains true to its traditions and still has an oldy worldly feel. Start at Cwm Gwdi Car Park: This car park is located north of Pen y Fan. Weather: Be prepared for unpredictable mountain weather and bring warm, waterproof clothing. Boots: Sturdy walking boots are essential due to the boggy sections and challenging terrain. Crowds Furthermore if you start at the car park at the bottom of the ridge you will find it much quieter route to the summits of Corn Du and Pen y Fan. Rating A challenging hike that will test your stamina. Allow five hours as an estimated time for completing the walk but this can vary.

With stunning views towards the Black Mountains in the east the skyline includes the summits of Hay Bluff and Lord Hereford's Knob to the northern end of the range and Waun Fach in the middle while further south you can see the Sugar Loaf close to the town of Abergavenny. It's a popular area for walking, hiking and other outdoor activities. Family friendly walks include an amble along the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal or a visit to the Henry Vaughan Garden. The garden can be found on the right-hand side of the Brinore tramroad just after the old railway bridge. For the more experienced walker and as an extension to your walk along the canal you may want to consider the ascent of Tor y Foel. At 551 metres above sea level it may not be the highest peak in the area but the views from the top are amazing and the walk along the tram road reveals a wealth of industrial history. Be prepared for a steep climb to the top and uneven terrain. Stout walking shoes or hiking boots are essential for the ascent of this hill. Walking poles will aid your balance particularly on the steeper sections of the trail. Take plenty of water and a packed lunch especially if you intend to complete the whole route. By starting at the Youth Hostel a shorter version of this walk is possible. I started the walk from Henderson Hall and I recorded a distance of 11.25 miles or 18 km in metric but that is quite far and if pushed for time the walk from the YHA is 6.3 miles (10.2 km). This would make it a half day walk. So you may want to consider this option.

Wales might be small in size but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in natural beauty, including the Brecon Beacons National park. The Waterfall country section begins about an hours drive north of Cardiff near Merthyr Tydfil and is made up of multiple hikes of varying difficulty. They take you up through the lower beacons through lush green forest along the river, along the way you will find the namesake waterfalls in various shapes and sizes. Depending on rainfall the main waterfalls can differ throughout the year, but always be careful around the water! There are various old ruins along the way but unfortunately no information or signage about what they used to be! However most is related to the old coal mining industry that used to dominate this area. At the foot of the hikes is a small village where you will find toilets, car parking and a few pubs ( some do takeaway food in containers for hikers) and a small tourist information board. The tourist information center is now closed. Overall a stunning part of wales with some very accessible hikes! But remember to always be careful, be aware of the water and take a bag for your rubbish!
