Getting off in front of the mountain gate, you look up to see five peaks facing each other, each topped with a temple, piercing the sky. The scenic area covers more than twenty square kilometers and is both a national geological park and a national forest park. According to records, the main peak is 1,437 meters above sea level. Standing at the foot of the mountain looking up, those peaks seem to pierce the clouds like five silent old men. There are several hiking trails, and I chose the simplest one—the Taizi Slope hiking trail. The stone steps wind all the way up. Proud of my fitness, I soon felt my legs weaken. I rested twice along the way and saw snack stalls by the path—grilled sausages for three yuan each, and hiking sticks surprisingly only five yuan. I bought a stick to steady myself and regained some confidence. Locals call this temple “Laoye Temple,” saying “The god sits inside the temple, the temple walks among the clouds.” Standing here and looking far, the mountains and clouds stretch endlessly, the Taihang Mountains winding like a giant dragon. The most magical thing on the summit isn’t the temple, but the Sky-High Immortal Bridge connecting Laoye Peak and Nainai Peak. The bell echoed in the valley for a long time, like a response, or a farewell. Coming down the mountain and looking back, Ancient Wudang Mountain was already hidden in the night, with only scattered lights faintly visible. This mountain’s history predates the southern Wudang Mountain, with temples built since the Sui and Tang dynasties. It is the elder brother in the “Northern Brother, Southern Brother” pair. For thousands of years, Zhenwu Emperor has sat on the Golden Summit, and Tai Chi master Zhang Sanfeng has attained enlightenment here. And I am just a passerby who came at dusk and left at night.
