#worthitornot The Great Ridge between Mam Tor and Lose Hill is the most walked line in the Peak District, but almost nobody notices the WWII Starfish decoy site tucked on the western flank near the old Mam Tor road closure. I parked at Mam Nick (£5 all day via RingGo, card works, no cash), climbed Mam Tor (517 m) in 20 minutes, then instead of following the Instagram crowd straight to Hollins Cross, dropped left down the eroded slope to the flat heath where concrete plinths and a circular scorched-earth ring still sit—this was a 1940s "Starfish" fire decoy, lit to fake a burning Sheffield for Luftwaffe crews. There is no signboard, just bumps and rusted rebar. Then I rejoined the ridge: Hollins Cross (400 m), Back Tor (390 m), Lose Hill (475 m). Total 8 km out-and-back, 2h40 with the detour. From Hope Station (55 min from Manchester) you can walk in via Hope village in 40 minutes, but Mam Nick gives the cleaner ridge start. Wind on Mam Tor in July was 35 mph—beanie and windproof essential even in summer. The Mam Tor road itself is permanently closed to cars due to landslips; bikes and walkers use the old tarmac, which is surreally cracked and humped. Food: Castleton has a chip shop and a decent bakery 3 km off-route; I packed a meal deal from Sheffield instead. Error I made: I trusted a "shortcut" gully off Back Tor and slid on wet grass—stay on the crest path. From there the ridge path west is the famous one: you stand on the edge of the Dark Peak, gritstone giving way to white limestone as you drop toward Winnats Pass. The full Mam Tor–Winnats edge walk is 7 km one way to the pass mouth, or 10 km loop back via Castleton. I did the one-way and descended into Winnats from the top stile—the gorge is a collapsed limestone cave system, 20 m walls, road squeezed through the bottom with tour coaches crawling at 10 mph. Two things nobody told me: the edge path gets brutally windy (gusts nearly took my pole at the Broken Road viewpoint), and the final descent into Winnats is on a narrow verge with traffic—do not walk the road surface, use the stile path. Parking at Mam Nick is £6 by machine (card ok). Castleton has cash-only ice cream vans but card works at the tea rooms. I wore trail shoes; the limestone is slippery when wet, so micro-spikes aren’t needed but grippy soles are. Mistake: I started at noon in August and the Edale-facing slope was baking while the Winnats side was in shadow—dawn is better. Question: is the Mam Tor ridge overrated by Instagram, or does the Winnats finish redeem it every time?

We recently enjoyed a peaceful glamping break on a beautiful farm near the village of Milwich in Staffordshire. Surrounded by rolling countryside and open fields, the spacious bell tents offered the perfect blend of comfort and nature. Waking up to birdsong, fresh country air, and sweeping rural views made it easy to switch off from everyday life. Milwich is a small village located between Stafford and Stoke-on-Trent, around 12 miles south-west of Stoke-on-Trent, making it an ideal base for exploring the wider Staffordshire countryside. One of the highlights of our stay was a day trip to the Peak District National Park. As Britain’s first national park, the Peak District is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, picturesque villages, and excellent walking trails. Around 20% of the national park lies within Staffordshire, offering easy access from Milwich. We headed to the stunning Winnats Pass near Castleton, one of the most iconic locations in the Peak District. The winding road cuts through a spectacular limestone valley, with towering cliffs on either side creating unforgettable views. Nearby, a walk up Mam Tor rewarded us with panoramic scenery across the Hope Valley and surrounding peaks. Back at the farm, the evening was just as memorable. As the sun dipped below the horizon and the countryside fell quiet, we relaxed outside our tent and enjoyed the simple pleasure of being surrounded by nature. The combination of a rural farm stay in Milwich and a day exploring the Peak District made for the perfect Staffordshire getaway—peaceful, scenic, and wonderfully refreshing. Nice to have an easy and relaxed walk at the stunning Monsal Trail, Monsalhead Viaduct & Headstone Tunnel at Bakewell of Peak District National Park. Monsal Trail is a famous walking route converted from a former railway line. According to Peak District National Park website, it is a 8.5 miles long traffic-free route for walkers, runners, cyclists, horse riders and wheelchair users through spectacular limestone dales with incredible views from places like the iconic Headstone Viaduct (as often seen from Monsal Head). The route follows the former Manchester to London Midland Railway line, closed in the late 1960s. You can enjoy the spectacular scenery of River Wye and Monsal Dale on Monsalhead Viaduct. Besides, the Headstone Tunnel also gives you an exceptional experience of mystery and eerie. Nice to have a relaxed afternoon tea at this famous cafe in Peak District National Park. Bakewell pudding and pie are the star products of this beautiful rural town. The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop claims in their website that they are the "Home of the Original Bakewell Pudding". You can order drink and bakery products at the decent restaruant on the upper floor, or the cafe area or outdoor area on the ground floor. Customers can also buy take-away products too. We arrived at the cafe at about 3pm. It was still very busy with lots of customers. The food and coffee quality was amazing. You'll also feel full quite quickly owing to large portion.
