🏯 Take a bus from Gaoping Passenger Transport Center to Chixiang Village, then walk 1 kilometer, and you'll reach this ancient temple. It was designated as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level in the seventh batch in 2013. The temple was founded in the third year of Guangshun, Later Zhou of the Five Dynasties (953 AD). The existing structures include the Jin Dynasty front hall, Yuan Dynasty middle hall, and Five Dynasties stone pillars (jingchuang)—a single temple spanning four dynasties. Why it's worth a special trip: ① Rare "four dynasties under one roof" layout The front hall is a surviving Jin Dynasty structure (Piluo Hall), the middle hall is a surviving Yuan Dynasty structure, and a pair of Five Dynasties stone pillars (953 AD) stand in front of the Hall of Heavenly Kings. The remaining buildings are from the Ming and Qing dynasties. These four ancient buildings are why it was designated a national heritage site. ② Nationally rare Taoist-themed shadow wall Upon entering, you'll see a brick-imitating-wood dougong shadow wall. In the center is a coiled dragon, with two phoenixes and two qilin (suspected) at the four corners. This is one of the few Taoist-themed shadow walls built within a Buddhist temple in China, perfectly showcasing the characteristic blend of the three religions in southeastern Shanxi. ③ Exquisite details of the Five Dynasties stone pillars The Sumeru pedestal of the eastern pillar is carved with flowers, phoenixes, and musicians, while the western pillar is carved with dragon patterns, kalavinkas, and jivamjivas. The lions on the eastern pillar are fierce and baring their teeth, while the lions on the western pillar sit gracefully and gently—the two pillars were funded by a married couple, with gender differences carved into the stone. The holes for wind chimes on the canopy indicate that these were stone pillars with bells, something I had never encountered before. ④ One log split into two beams The two flat beams above the Buddha altar in the rear hall (Mahavira Hall) have identical curves—because they were made from a single log split in half. This kind of folk wisdom is more moving than any explanation. ⑤ The story of the temple guardians This place was once used as a school, with the main hall serving as an auditorium. The inverted lotus petals on the column bases on one side of the Buddha altar are worn away—because mischievous children rubbed them with their feet; those on the other side were preserved because they were blocked by tables. The elementary school students of that time are now the temple guardians, watching over the temple their ancestors watched over every day. For this alone, they deserve respect. Erxian Palace: located on Wolong Hill at the southern foot of Cuiping Mountain in Gaoping City, facing south. The exact date of its founding is unknown. The nine-room east wing was built in the last years of Emperor Zhaozong of Tang (907), and the main hall is even older, with repairs during the Jin, Yuan, and Ming dynasties. The existing structure includes the main hall, left and right side halls, east and west auxiliary halls, guest rooms, and an opera stage, totaling 47 rooms. The temple houses more than 20 steles from various dynasties, two Tang dynasty sandstone lion sculptures, other stone carvings, and a Jin dynasty brick-carved Sumeru pedestal, all of which hold great historical, scientific, and artistic value. It is a nationally protected cultural heritage site. Erxian Palace primarily worships the two sister deities, Chongshu and Chonghui. After ascending to heaven, the two immortals cared deeply about human suffering, fought demons, and were highly revered, leading to the establishment of shrines and temples in their honor. During the Song dynasty Chongning period, Emperor Huizong officially bestowed the titles Chonghui and Chongshu on the two immortals and granted the temple the name Zhenze.

It was listed as one of the second batch of provincial cultural heritage sites in Shanxi Province in 1986. The exact founding date of the temple is unknown, but a complete temple already existed in the 5th year of Yuanfeng in the Northern Song Dynasty (1082). The temple faces south and features a two-courtyard layout. Along its central axis are Guanyin Pavilion, the Mountain Gate and Hall of Heavenly Kings, Pilu Hall, and Leiyin Hall, flanked by east and west wing-rooms. Pilu Hall is an original structure from the 5th year of Yuanfeng in the Northern Song Dynasty, strictly adhering to the official hall style of the "Yingzao Fashi" (Treatise on Architectural Methods). A major renovation in the 1st year of Zhengde in the Ming Dynasty only replaced bricks and tiles, while the dougong (bracket sets) and beam frames of the Song Dynasty main wooden structure remain to this day. The Hall of Heavenly Kings and Leiyin Hall were added during the Ming Dynasty, and the wing-rooms and Guanyin Pavilion were renovated during the Qing Dynasty, making the entire temple a collection of wooden structures from the Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties. The village does not receive many tourists and has a low level of commercialization, making it suitable for ancient architecture enthusiasts to visit. Zisheng Temple can be combined with nearby ancient village attractions for a one-day itinerary. The wind at Yangtoushan carries the warmth of the Northern Wei. There are 9 grottoes (my absolute favorites are grotto 3 and 5). Strolling through the forest park, watching the stone carvings age with time, every carved line is an ancient poem to the years. Sunlight filters through the leaves, falling on the mottled stone walls. The Buddha’s gentle eyes and brows make it feel as if a thousand years have slowed down at this moment. ✨ 3:30–4:00 PM Yangtoushan ➡️ Kaihua Temple, about 25 minutes by car, moving from forest to ancient hall. Kaihua Temple is a “museum” of Song dynasty murals. As someone with an art background, standing inside and slowly feeling the devotion and romance hidden in the colors is truly healing! Though centuries old, it remains as vivid as ever. ✨ 5:30–6:30 PM Kaihua Temple ➡️ Wolong Bay wellness town, about 25 minutes by car. We had amazing weather, like a comic scene! The blend of comics and traditional Chinese style is full of classical culture charm. The venue design is stylish, filled with an artistic atmosphere 🎨 3️⃣ Xizhen Suzhuang Ming and Qing dynasty courtyards plus a wedding culture theme. The red lanterns and gray brick walls are great for photos. The wedding museum has an old bridal sedan chair, traditional Chinese wedding dresses, and wedding customs items. You can even try throwing the embroidered ball! 4️⃣ Lianghu Ancient Village A large, well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty village. Stone paths and old houses are everywhere. The brick, stone, and wood carvings are exquisite and worth exploring carefully! 5️⃣ Busan Wellness Town Free to enter and beautiful on sunny days. There’s a coin museum to visit. Surrounded by mountains, with lake and mountain views, it’s great for walking or biking along the lakeside boardwalk 👏 Besides these, there are many other fun places. If you want a quiet getaway to see authentic ancient buildings and villages, Gaoping is highly recommended ✨

Honestly, the city heat in July made me want to evaporate on the spot💀 until I plunged deep into the southern Taihang Mountains. The temperature outside the car window dropped from 38° to 22° all the way down. I instantly felt alive again. First, how to get there—— ✈️ You can fly into Changzhi or Zhengzhou, but the smoothest way I found is taking the high-speed train directly to Jincheng East Station. In summer 2026, several extra trains were added. It’s less than 2 hours from Zhengzhou and about 2.5 hours from Taiyuan. Rent a car right after you get off the train, drive along the tourist highway into the mountains, and within half an hour you’ll enter the Taihang No. 1 scenic area, where the roadside views are unbelievably beautiful. 🚗 For self-drivers, it’s even better. Set your navigation to Zero Kilometer Cultural Station as the starting point. This station was fully upgraded in 2026, featuring a giant landmark stone and the Taihang Culture Experience Hall, which is free to enter and perfect for photos. Heading south from here is the essence of Taihang No. 1, a 136-km route connecting over 100 natural and cultural spots. No need to plan ahead—just explore and stop as you go. ⛰️ First stop: straight to the summit—— Wangmangling, the crown jewel of southern Taihang, stands at 1,700 meters with a summer feel of just over 20 degrees. Tickets cost 90 yuan. The shuttle bus is 50 yuan round trip, or you can take the cable car one way for 120 yuan to reach the top directly. This year there’s a great hidden deal—travelers arriving by high-speed train to Jincheng East Station can buy a 3-day combo ticket for 150 yuan with proof of travel. It includes admission, shuttle, and cable car, saving you over 100 yuan—a total steal! I chose to reach the summit at 5 AM to watch the sunrise. When the sea of clouds surged up from below, honestly, my eyes got a little misty. Golden light shone through the clouds, setting the whole mountain range ablaze. A guy nearby was shaking as he held his camera, saying after 20 years of shooting sunrises, this one was the most stunning. The summit has alpine meadows, and July is the greenest time. Spread out a picnic mat and lie back under the blue sky and white clouds, with a thousand-foot abyss beneath your feet. That vastness can’t be found on any city rooftop. The glass walkway costs 20 yuan per person. Standing on the cliff edge looking down is definitely nerve-wracking, but the photo opportunities are 100%. 🏞️ Second stop: dive into the canyon—— Xiyagou, upgraded to a national-level tourist resort in 2024, is free to enter. But the cliffside road has a 4.2-meter height limit, so private cars can’t enter. You’ll need to transfer to the park shuttle bus for about 50 yuan per person. This 7.5-km cliffside road was carved out of the sheer rock face by three generations using hammers and steel rods starting in 1962, taking 30 years to complete. Riding the shuttle through the tunnels, you pass one lighting window after another. Each window offers a different view of cliffs and canyons, more thrilling than any 4D movie. At the canyon bottom, the village with white walls and gray tiles sits beside a clear river running through a red rock gorge over 100 meters deep—truly a hidden paradise. Be sure to walk through Chiyan Gorge, where the sunlight on the red Danxia rocks makes the whole canyon look like it’s on fire. Qinglong Lake is also worth a detour, with unreal green water reflecting the cliffs—every shot is wallpaper-worthy. Exploring the canyon bottom takes about 3 to 4 hours, just the right pace. 🌿 Spend the third day wandering ancient villages—— Zheshuicun is the start of Taihang No. 1 highway and one of the fourth batch of China’s traditional ancient villages. It’s heavily forested with streams winding through. The village offers water activities and hiking trails, perfect for a leisurely day. Songmiao Village is even more amazing, with over 80% forest coverage. Open your window to mountain views and listen to insects at night. The village has wellness trails through forests and streams, plus cycling paths for scenic rides. Zhanghe Village is another hidden gem along Taihang No. 1, with few people and beautiful scenery, ideal for zoning out. Each of the three villages has a distinct style, and visiting all three in one day is just right. 🛏️ Where to stay at night—— There are plenty of lodging options here. On the summit, you can find rooms with windows opening to the sea of clouds. In the canyon, there are stone courtyards on cliff edges. In the ancient villages, old houses have been renovated. The night I stayed on the summit, opening the curtains revealed the entire sea of clouds. At night, wrapped in a blanket, I didn’t need the air conditioning at all. Prices in July’s peak season range from about 400 to 800 yuan. Booking two weeks in advance is recommended, as walk-ins usually won’t find a room. 🍜 Food and drink tips—— You must try the local hand-pulled noodles, which are incredibly chewy and topped with mountain vegetable sauce, filling your mouth with fresh aroma. Aogao and shaomo are made from Taihang grains, crispy outside and soft inside. Street stalls sell them for a few yuan as snacks to eat on the go. Forsythia tea is a local specialty, brewed from the abundant forsythia flowers on the mountains. Also known as Shenggu Temple, this Taoist temple was built to honor Ma Xiangu, a healer who served the people during the late Jin and early Yuan dynasties. Construction began in 1284, and in 1307 the Yuan royal family officially named it Wanshou Palace, recognizing it as a royal Taoist temple. The complex preserves two intact Yuan dynasty wooden main halls. The mountain gate and opera stage were added during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Inside the halls, the three saints of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism are worshiped together, creating a unique layout that unites the three teachings. Follow the central axis to visit the mountain gate, three-teachings hall, opera stage, stone pavilion, and Shenggu Hall. The main highlights are the two Yuan dynasty main halls: the three-teachings hall contains detailed Yuan dynasty murals with a style similar to Yongle Palace, and the Ming dynasty stone lions in front bear a Wanli era inscription. Shenggu Hall retains the original Yuan dynasty beam structure, and the reclining statue of the immortal maiden inside is usually not open to the public. The site is rarely crowded and free from commercial noise, making it ideal for visitors interested in ancient architecture and historical murals. Allocate 1–2 hours to explore. The village environment is peaceful, perfect for a short cultural day trip.

One of the nine great ancient mountains of China, Ancient Yangchang Mountain EL+851 Ancient Yangchang Mountain is located on the Taihang Ridge of the Taihang Mountains. Its terrain is steep and the mountain path resembles a winding sheep intestine, which is how it got its name. The Yangchang slope starts from Changping Village in Qinyang to the south and extends north to Wancheng Village in Zezhou, spanning a total length of 4 kilometers, winding through the Wanzicheng mountains. The ancient path was first built during the Zhou dynasty. It connects the Yiluo Basin in the south with the Shanxi Plateau in the north, serving both as a military stronghold and a trade route. The Taihang Ridge witnessed important events such as General Bai Qi’s victory over Zhao at the Battle of Changping and Cao Cao’s northern campaigns. During the Tang dynasty, General Guo Ziyi built Wanzicheng in the mountains. The inscription on the south gate reads “Reaches the capital to the north,” while the north gate inscription reads “Connects to Yiluo in the south.” In the 11th year of Jian’an in the Eastern Han dynasty (206), Cao Cao passed through Yangchang Mountain during his campaign against Gaogan and wrote the famous poem “Hardship in the Cold”: “Heading north to Taihang Mountain, how arduous and towering it is! The winding Yangchang slope is so steep, the wheels of the carriage are crushed…”

Baqianxia|Mingdeju headquarters This place has a view of Baqianxia fourth parking lot, but it’s located on the mountain, so you have to take a detour going down. During holidays, traffic is restricted at the foot of the mountain, so cars can only park in the fourth parking lot. If you stay closer, you can park in the 2nd or 3rd parking lot. However, the commercial area here is better and more convenient. The guesthouse is relatively new, nicely decorated, with large rooms and separate wet and dry areas!! There’s also a charging station!! Huangcheng Xiangfu|Wangcheng Express Hotel I originally thought this place was new and offered great value, but after arriving, I found its location is amazing. It’s the closest guesthouse to the ancient city. If you stay in a room facing the ancient city, you can watch the iron flower show from your room!! They also have an elevator, which is really convenient. The owner’s service attitude is excellent. If you don’t drive, they can pick you up from the scenic area parking lot. If you drive, the owner will drive you in, and you can park right at the guesthouse entrance. When it’s time to leave, you can drive yourself to Huangcheng Xiangfu, which is really convenient!! However, their disposable toothbrushes are hard to use. Yangcheng|Huancheng Choice Hotel This hotel just opened, so the price is very reasonable. The decoration is nice, the rooms are large, all equipped with smart appliances, and the service attitude is very good. The backyard parking lot is large, and overall, I’m very satisfied. However, there is a big screen at the supermarket next door that plays videos, so you can hear some noise. But since I was so satisfied with the room, this can be ignored. Gaoping|Hanting Gaoping city only has one Hanting, which opened less than two years ago and is still very new. Hanting’s quality is always reliable. The floors are high with little noise, there’s a charging station across the street, and their breakfast is great, including wontons, noodles, instant noodles, freshly ground soy milk, coffee, and more. The only downside is that their lobby doesn’t have a coffee machine, which all the other Hanting hotels I’ve stayed at usually have.

A hidden gem in Gaoping, this small ancient village features Taihang fortress-style homes built along the mountainside, preserving a timeless charm unknown to most. The entire cluster of ancient residences retains its original architectural form, with old houses made of blue bricks and rammed earth, stone fortress walls, and arched ancient alleys connected in a scattered layout. The two-story brick and wood buildings showcase distinctive northern traditional architecture. After years of weathering, most old village houses are vacant and dilapidated, with overgrown yards, standing ruined walls, abandoned stone mills, and old wooden doors with brick carvings—everywhere bearing traces of time. In spring, new life emerges, with fresh buds contrasting against bare branches. Under clear skies, old and new scenes blend, creating a rich atmosphere. The village clearly separates old and new areas. The old village perfectly preserves the rural layout from the farming era. With very few visitors throughout, it remains quiet and serene, ideal for short trips, cultural photography, and peaceful relaxation. The ancient castle’s bluestone slabs reflect sunlight intensely. Without shade, it’s easy to get heatstroke. It’s not cooler than the south. · Exhausting mountain roads: Wangmangling and the cliff-hanging road have many sharp turns that cause motion sickness. The scenic shuttle ticket package is expensive (180+). The ancient village is full of stairs that ruin your knees. It’s pure special forces-level hardship. · Sudden strong storms: Thunderstorms and hail in July afternoons come without warning. Taihang No. 1 Highway switches between sun and rain, disrupting plans and posing danger. ☀️ Survival guide if you must go · Go early or late: Rush to Huangcheng Xiangfu before 7 AM. Leave the ancient village after 3 PM. Return to the city at noon for helo noodles and rest. · Prepare for extremes: Bring a light down jacket or coat for the mountains (Lingchuan) where nights drop to 17℃. In the city, pack high-SPF sunscreen and a folding umbrella. · Avoid traffic jams: Don’t drive to Situ Town or Songmiao on weekends. Taking the shuttle bus is more convenient. Summary: Don’t trust the citywide average “22℃ cool” temperature. The city is hot and the mountains are cool with a big difference. Summer in Jincheng means “baking on stone slabs + dizzy mountain roads.” For real cooling, wait until September or head straight to the deep mountains of Lingchuan!
