A Walk Through History – The UNESCO Medina Tetouan’s Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most authentic and well-preserved in Morocco. Unlike the bustling souks of Marrakesh or Fes, Tetouan’s Medina feels more local and intimate, with narrow streets, traditional crafts, and friendly artisans. Walking through its alleys, I saw handmade textiles, intricate woodwork, and beautiful zellige tilework reflecting the city’s deep Andalusian roots. Andalusian Influence & Spanish Charm Tetouan has a strong Spanish influence, a legacy from the Andalusian refugees who settled here centuries ago. The Spanish Quarter, with its colonial-style buildings, lively plazas, and charming cafés, gave the city a unique European touch. One of the highlights was Plaza Primo, where I enjoyed a coffee while admiring the blend of Moroccan and Spanish architecture. Coastal Beauty & Mountain Views Just outside the city, Tetouan offers access to some of Morocco’s most beautiful Mediterranean beaches. Martil and Cabo Negro are perfect for a seaside escape. #celebrateit Tetouan is a city located in Mediterranean Morocco. With its UNESCO-protected medina and Spanish-style architecture, Tetouan is perhaps the jewel of Morocco's Mediterranean coast. It is surrounded by limestone mountains covered in a thick forest. Tetouan is known for its excellent craftsmanship and musical lineage, making it a part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the area of Crafts and Folk Art since 2017. Like most Moroccan towns, Tetouan is divided into the medina and the Ville Nouvelle, in this case, a Spanish Ensanche. Resting on the foothills of the Rif Mountains, Tetouan has also been called 'Little Jerusalem' and the 'sister of Fez'.

We left Tangier and drove for an hour and a half to the World Heritage Site - Tétouan, a historic city in northwestern Morocco (Figure 1). Since the 8th century, the Medina of Tétouan has been an important city during the Islamic period. Although it is one of the smallest Arab settlements in Morocco, it is undoubtedly the most complete and least influenced by external influences. We entered the city gate (Figure 2) and saw the palace (Figure 3). Led by a local guide, we walked into the short streets and narrow alleys of the community (Figure 4) and visited the traditional market (Figure 5) to experience the local customs. The streets and alleys in the city are winding, and there are many shops (Figure 6). The city is famous for its fine leather, hand-woven carpets, and copperware, as well as more than 80 mosques and other cultural buildings (Figure 7). It is not only an ancient city and a famous historical and cultural city, but also a holy city (Figure 8). At noon, we had lunch at a special restaurant in the ancient city (Figure 9). After lunch, we headed to the sixth stop - Chefchaouen.

Tetouan was once known as Tamouda and it is believed that this settlement was founded close to the third century B.C. The Roman occupiers destroyed the settlement in approximately the year forty-two A.D. during a revolt. A fortified camp was erected in place of the settlement by the Roman troops and traces of their occupation are still visible today. The Archaeological Museum in Tetouan preserves and exhibits beautiful artifacts and pieces of history that reminds and educates visitors of the rich historical roots of Tetouan. The Archaeological Museum in Tetouan was constructed in 1943. Its exhibits are dedicated to the fascinating pre-historic and the pre-Islamic times of Morocco. The pre-Islamic era in Morocco includes the history of the Romans, Phoenicians, Mauritanians and the Punics. Islamic history is also looked at through various exhibits in the museum. Throughout the centuries of re-settlements, battles, invasion and revolts, pieces of each occurrence have remained. When these pieces are put together they help us to create snippets of the culture and traditions that have been handed down over the centuries and can still be seen today. When we enter this inspiring museum we will be greeted by the Three Graces. This is a mosaic that has survived since Roman times and depicts the celebration of mythological figures. Another wonderful masterpiece is the Sumerian statue that was discovered near Asilah. The rest of the museum has a wide variety of exhibits and artifacts that each tell a spectacular story. Some stories may seem trivial, but they highlight the progress and evolution of the Moroccan community. When visiting the Archeaological Museum in Tetouan, we can look forward to seeing artifacts such as different currency coins, tools that have been crafted from stone or bone, pottery, bronze items, amphoras, mosaics, architectural discoveries and ancient inscriptions. The figurine collection that is on display is extremely important as most of the figurines date back to first century A.D. The protection and preservation of North African Literature can be viewed in the museum's extensive library that is home to approximately sixty-thousand volumes of literature. This educational and fascinating attraction in Morocco is the pride of Tetouan and has become increasingly popular with foreign visitors and researchers. It is a treasure trove of historical finds and reminders of the past. Following the visit of the museum, we will continue to the Loukach Museum of religious heritage by passing by the old Royal Palace which is a 17th century building, at Place Hassan II (Hassan II Square). It is itself a reflection of the Hispano-Moresque architecture. The palace is closed to public but are allowed to take photos; its main ornate gate Bab Er-Rouah can give you a mental idea of what it's beyond. The Hassan II square is situated where the historic and modern parts of the city converge to create the heart of the town.
