Just had the most amazing day exploring Bandir Blue Lake and the Panlong Ancient Trail! The scenery here is absolutely next-level—seriously, this lake is so blue it looks like a filter IRL. Bandir Blue Lake is famous for its crystal-clear, insanely vibrant water (trust me, your Insta feed NEEDS this). Hot tip: Don’t forget your sunscreen, because the UV here is no joke! We hired a driver, so parking was super easy and just a 5-minute walk to the lake entrance. Chill vibes all around. Next up: the Panlong Ancient Trail. OMG, this spot is packed with legendary history! The name “Panlong” means “coiled dragon”—the trail is literally shaped like one, with dramatic twists. 📍2 Days 1 Night Reverse Route Hankou → Wangmangling → Zhanggou / Xiyagou → Donglian → Xilian → Jiulianshan Grand Canyon → Laolongkou Waterfall → Baligou Scenic Area About the route: 1️⃣Day 1: Hankou → Wangmangling → Zhanggou / Xiyagou (13km, about 6 hours) Features: Steep uphill climb, somewhat physically demanding, take it easy if bringing kids Details: Carpool from Xinxiang Station in the morning, depart at 6:10 AM, start climbing around 7:50 AM. Depart from Hankou, pass through Dishuizhai to Wangmangling. Stayed in Xiyagou (tested and found Xiyagou scenery far better, with a stunning cliff-hanging road). So at the fork towards Zhanggou, head directly towards the Ant Ladder direction to Xiyagou (there is a clear fork, one path goes up, the other down, you can ask the supply station staff). The descent is all stairs, making you question your life choices. 2️⃣Day 2: Zhanggou / Xiyagou → Zhoujiapu → Donglian → Xilian → Jiulianshan Grand Canyon → Laolongkou Waterfall → Baligou Scenic Area (about 40km, around 9 hours) Features: Less climbing, easier paths, mostly cliffside trails. Details: The homestay owner took us to Zhoujiapu. From there to Donglian is all cliffside trails with tree cover, so it’s not too scary. Just watch your step and don’t worry too much. (The narrower sections have been repaired.) Between Donglian and Xilian, you can take a keji ride for 15 RMB per person, saving a lot of walking. ⚠️Important tip: After passing Laolongkou Waterfall, the path gets difficult and walking in the dark is very dangerous. Manage your time well! If bringing kids, start early. About transportation: Before departure: Arrange your car in advance, signal is weak in the mountains, set departure and return times. Return: From Laolongkou down to the scenic service center, you can take a sightseeing bus for 30 RMB per person to the service center. About accommodation: 1️⃣Stay in Zhanggou, a popular choice among hikers 2️⃣Stay in Xiyagou, said to have a better environment than Zhanggou. 3️⃣Stay in Xilian, if you have enough time and energy on the first day, you can walk straight to Xilian, which offers more accommodation and dining options. Buses run but are infrequent, so don’t risk it if you’re in a hurry. ⚠️ The electric shuttle only goes to the core tea field area. The rest is stairs you have to climb yourself. If your knees aren’t strong, consider your limits. I prefer walking the tea field trail—fewer people, the breeze carries the scent of fresh tea leaves, and it’s more comfortable than riding. 2️⃣ Xinxiang | Henan Baoquan and Baligou are close but have completely different vibes. Baoquan focuses on water. The clear pool and waterfall follow you along the path. It’s refreshing to splash in the water in summer, great for kids or those wanting an easy walk. Baligou is wilder, with grand mountain scenery and many stairs. It takes about 2 hours to reach Tianhe Waterfall, so people with average stamina might get winded. My plan: Baoquan in the morning, Baligou in the afternoon, only the highlights—don’t overdo it. 🚄 Xinxiang East Station has a direct tourist bus to Baoquan, costing about 30 yuan. To get to Baligou, transfer from Baoquan by bus or taxi, about 50 yuan. ⚠️ Water and snacks inside both parks cost twice as much. Bring two bottles of water with you. 🍜 The farmhouse noodles at the foot of the mountain taste better than those inside the parks. Ten yuan a bowl, with generous lamb portions. 3️⃣ Datong | Shanxi Datong is my personal favorite among these eight places. The Yungang Grottoes are indescribably impressive. About 80 yuan per person, much better value than inside the park. 🚄 There’s a bus line from Panjin Station to Red Beach, but it’s infrequent. If you’re in a hurry, take a taxi. I prefer going in the afternoon when the light is low, making the red beach and green reeds stand out with more depth. 6️⃣ Yichang | Hubei For Yichang’s Three Gorges and Qingjiang Gallery, I recommend choosing just one. The Three Gorges Folk Village is man-made Tujia culture with many performances, good for seniors and kids to explore slowly. Qingjiang Gallery offers pure natural scenery, a peaceful boat ride to enjoy the mountains and water. I chose Qingjiang Gallery. ⏰ The first boat leaves in the morning. The full trip takes 4 hours. You’ll be back at the dock by noon for lunch, timing just right. 📍 The Three Gorges Waterfall is far from the city but worth a separate trip. The waterfall has a huge flow, and the mist hits your face. It’s refreshing in summer. 🍜 Near Wanda Plaza downtown, radish dumplings are crispy outside and tender inside.
